Field reporter, Ali McGuire, chases end-of-the-world stories in the months leading up to Y2K, but nothing prepares her for the morning after, when a Catholic priest is found dead in an underground sanctuary, surrounded by weapons, cash, and stockpiles of food.
Police investigate the death of the corrupt clergyman and land on a suspect, but Ali’s behind-the-scenes access to the nights’ street performers and vendors shines a different light on the dead priest.
Sparks fly between the police and the press as Ali races to uncover the truth before an iconic local church is shut down and their beloved leader ends up wearing the wrong kind of collar.

I have only read: Previous Engagements, but here is the review: This book had a different angle from many cozy mysteries that made it unique. I enjoyed the book, would like to read more, and would recommend.
This collection brings Ali Loukas to the Boston to start her new career as a reporter. I had actually previously read First Night Last Rites (book 4) prior to knowing it was the fourth of series. I will say that the story itself was complete and I didn’t feel lost but I was glad to get the opportunity to read the entire series from book 1. The mysteries in each book are self-contained but personal storyline of Ali (relationships, family dynamics, and such) carry through sequentially from story to story so I definitely recommend reading them in order. Ali is a reported in Boston who manages to find herself in the midst of murders (which are novel and refreshing) given I read a lot of mysteries. The read is easy and definitely cozy but keeps me engaged and I look forward to reading more. I thank the author and Booksprout for an ARC copy of this book at my request and am leaving this review honestly and voluntarily.
I enjoyed every book in this box set. Each mystery is so different from the last one. The scenery is unique and new characters are introduced when necessary. The romances progresses through the book, not standing still. I enjoyed that aspect. The writing is great. Each book could be read as a stand-alone but I think it is best to start with the first book and read through all four. With its dynamic characters, great mysteries and wonderful romance, this series is a cozy mysteries dream.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. It was well written and kept you guessing who the culprit was. I received a free copy of this book.

These are the first four books in the story of Ali Loukas, a reporter for a radio newscaster. Her dream is to be a TV newscaster. But there is mayhem, that turns into murders along the way. That is where she meets up with family friend Detective Ryan McGuire. Ryan and Ali don’t agree with her snooping around, and that is part of the fun in this book set. So sit back and enjoy their story. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this box set from Booksprout.
I love the opportunity to do this box set. I was first introduced to this series with book four. It gives me an opportunity to go back and read from book one and see the character development that I missed. Thank you for the opportunity.
Book One: Previous Engagements
Ali wants to go from radio to television. Who doesn’t right? She gets a break to do so, or what she hopes will put her in the line of sight for it. Got to deal with the resident person and her idol. Read the book.
What is really the fun part of this story is the moms. Her mom and mom’;s old college friend, who has a son her age. Read for more fun.
Book Two: Drowned at the Rat
This involves a historic landmark/institution in Boston. Will it survive at murder there and the changing times.
Lots of rabbit trails to follow here. Never saw the who did it coming.
Ali and Ryan? need to read to see.

Book Four: First Night, Last Rites
This was my introduction to the series. I am copying that review here so you can get the real honest impression. Why I wanted to be able to read the previous books.
Want a trip down memory lane? Read this book. It is about to turn Y2K in this timeline. What a riot.
So besides that our heroine helps her friend interview for performers for the First Nite. One is a priest or is he a performer? Why does he have all that stuff in the basement of a Historic church?
Mom has a secret that she is not telling that surprises everyone. Thad has one to but it has issues. Want more read this book.
Had me guessing who done it till the end. Nice job. My theory in the beginning was false and never got caught to figure it out.
My first with this author and in this series. I can say without a doubt that you can read this as a standalone and not be lost. There are a few references to previous books but not anything that would lose you.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

*** Reviewing “FIRST NIGHT, LAST RITES (BOOK 4)” ***
Anisa is visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Boston TV reporter Ali Loukas McGuire and her husband Police Detective Ryan McGuire, hoping to attend the First Night New Year’s Eve celebration. Ali’s brother, Thad, joined them from the hallway to greet his mom. Then Ryan’s parents arrived. Everyone enjoyed the gift-giving and a few laughs besides. Then Ryan left for work and Ali got a call from Izzy, asking for her help. Her assistant was sick and Izzy had a large group of street performers coming for an interview for First Night. She wanted Ali to sit in on the auditions for clowns, fire eaters, and jugglers, and help make the final decisions on hiring.
As Ali finished the clown auditions, she headed outside to do the fire eater auditions since the fire code would not allow open flames in the office she had been using. A man, Brandon Watkins, ran up to her saying he missed his audition because he got confused where it was. But she recognized him as the man in clerical robes who had been first to arrive and then claimed he had the wrong room. He was wearing jeans now, but she recognized him.
At the First Night celebration, she saw Brandon run from a building with two big men chasing him. She followed as they ran to the Old North Church. Brandon opened the door and gave them money as they threatened him. Then they left. What was going on? When the supposed Catholic priest is found dead in an underground sanctuary, surrounded by weapons, cash, and stockpiles of food, they realized the “local priest” was not who they thought he was. So who was he? Ali and Ryan have their work cut out for them as they try to determine the truth and find the killer.
