A Miami hit-and-run witness winds up as bait for drug smugglers—in an “explosive” novel cowritten by the New York Times–bestselling author of Bad Monkey (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution). Chris Meadows’s charmed life as an up-and-coming architect in Coconut Grove has kept him far removed from Miami’s bloody drug trade. But his comfortable existence comes crashing down around him when Chris … crashing down around him when Chris witnesses the hit-and-run death of an ex-girlfriend by a car full of drug smuggling gangsters.
Now caught up in southern Florida’s brutal underground cocaine war, Meadows is in a fight for his life—to evade not only the hit men seeking to silence him, but also the crooked Miami cops who would rather exploit than protect him.
This is the very first suspense thriller written by the New York Times–bestselling author of Razor Girl and Sick Puppy and Bill Montalbano, a writing team praised for its “fine flair for characters and settings” (Library Journal). Those who enjoy Hiaasen’s other Florida thrillers, the Doc Ford novels by Randy Wayne White, or Netflix’s Narcos will want to discover these early crime fiction gems.
more
For lovers of Carl Hiassen’s Florida send-ups like me, the prospect of seeing more books come out due to his partnership with another writer offer an enticing prospect. But, buyer beware: all those wacky characters with teeth missing from their mental gears?…they’re gone. All those hilarious situations fueled by ridiculous and short-sighted …
Architect Chris Meadows is in for a major life change when he witnesses the hit and run of an exgirlfriend by a car of drug smugglers. A good read but not the usual Hiaasen zaniness.
Hiaasen’s first. Not as funny as his later books, but still extremely entertaining. A good beach read!
Fair
Hiaasen’s books are a reliable good time for those of us who live in Flori-duh and for those who appreciate the eccentric folks who tend to land here…
I have loved all of Carl Hiassen’s books until this one. A little heavier tone, not as light hearted.
these tails are always entertaining
I love his books, always in Florida on the water and easy to read!
Carl Hiaasen is always great for comic relief. His stories are witty and quick to read. I enjoyed Power Burn.
If you don’t like to laugh, don’t read this book.
good read, not sure I would go there now, love his Skinny Dip book
I loaned my kindle to my daughter so she could read this one. Great read.
Hiaasen is always a hit.
Carl is one of my favorite authors.
All of his books are great
Hiassen always brings characters to life. This one so gritty, so real, it makes you want to sleep with the lights on. At the same time, human warmth exudes. Entertaining doesn’t quite describe it, but its a must read.
Always love these characters. Makes me laugh out loud.
Believable description of drug situation in SE USA. Likable protagonist who acted outside his normal character with intelligent and effective plan.
Always a fun trip to Florida and it’s unusual characters
This author is so descriptive with his writing that you can laugh it loud one moment and cringe the next. I grew up in South Florida so outrageous characters are normal. Everyone will like the wit Hiassen brings to his novels. Wonderful writing.
