Under cover of night in Richmond, Virginia, a human monster strikes, leaving a gruesome trail of stranglings that has paralyzed the city. Medical examiner Kay Scarpetta suspects the worst: a deliberate campaign by a brilliant serial killer whose signature offers precious few clues. With an unerring eye, she calls on the latest advances in forensic research to unmask the madman. But this … investigation will test Kay like no other, because it’s being sabotaged from within and someone wants her dead.

Stale and a little boring. Have enjoyed her books, but enough already
The book was excellent, but of course, anything Patricia Cornwell writes is excellent.
Very well written, suspenseful, intelligent and utterly engrossing
the beginning of a great series
Postmortem was based on a real event which made the book more interesting to me. This book was the first of many adventures of the character Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a very intellectual, strong woman character that any reader would love and want her to succeed. It was a great mystery that was resolved with science/facts that was clearly explained.
It is a typical Scarpetta book. You must pay attention as you read because you might miss a detail that could be important to solving the crime. It holds your attention.
I enjoyed the early Cornwell books, of which this is one. Sometimes too graphic, but good characters and stories.
like this series
This is an amazing book. It is one of the early Kay Scarpetta novels, and nothing like the newer books.
I love all her books
In the beginning I loved Patricia Cornwell’s books but then she took a turn in her writing and I just couldn’t get into it! But this book Post Mortem, is an excellent book. It’s definitely a scary page turner! I highly recommend.
GREAT writing. All the science is accurate too.
Intense… page turner
Love the author
I stopped reading her because she never stops being NEGATIVE about her associates nor the “Woe is me” attitude; rather depressing especially after suffering through “Red Mist” miserably told in 3rd party so that maybe even Patricia could not stand her own writing. See previous review on Amazon for Red Mist.
Love this book but read it years ago .
First in a great series Scarpetta
Made me a Patricia Cromwell fan for life!
I have every one of her books. Been a favored author for me many years.
I have read the entire Kay Scarpetta series and Patricia Cornwell never disappoints.
