The Poldark Saga is the masterwork of Winston Graham’s life, evoking the historical period like only he can and creating a work of rich and poor, loss and love, that you’ll never forget.
Ross PoldarkIn the first novel in Winston Graham’s hit series, a weary Ross Poldark returns to England from the Revolutionary war, looking forward to a joyful homecoming … England from the Revolutionary war, looking forward to a joyful homecoming with his beloved Elizabeth. Instead he discovers his father has died, his home is overrun by livestock and drunken servants, and Elizabeth engaged to his cousin. Ross has no choice but to start his life anew.

In the enchanting second novel in the Poldark series, Demelza Carne, an impoverished miner’s daughter rescued from a fairground brawl, now happily finds herself Ross Poldark’s wife. But the events of these turbulent years put the strength of their romance and their marriage to the test.
Jeremy Poldark
Ross Poldark faces the darkest hour of his life in this third novel of the Poldark series. Reeling from the tragic death of a loved one, Ross is brought to trial for the sacking of a nearby grounded ship, and despite their stormy marriage, Demelza tries to rally support, to save him and their family. Originally published in 1946, Poldark is still a meaningful family saga today. Set in Cornwall, England1789 just after the Revolutionary War with America, the book begins with Ross Poldark, aged twenty-two, returning from soldiering. He finds everything in disarray: Jud and Prudie Paynter, who were to have cared for the house, had let it go to ruin. Ross even found chickens roosting inside. Francis Poldark, a cousin, is engaged to Elizabeth, the young woman Ross had thought to marry. The land is lying fallow, and the copper mine is producing poorly. Ross has enough funds to purchase oxen and other stock so he can begin to set things right. This becomes the theme of the entire book: Ross always looks to the future, planning and making decisions that will improve his life and the lives of those villagers who depend on him. This book has some terrible history in the total economic separation of the rich and poor, the poverty, starvation, and drunkenness, the lack of any medical care for the average person. Ross gambles in his marriage to Demelza, an uneducated miner’s daughter far below his station, on starting a smelting plant to stop the monopoly the wealthy use to keep ore prices low, on his trust in the justice system to fairly enforce the laws yet to turn a blind eye on minor smuggling. These first three books in the series are powerful, moving, heart wrenching, uplifting, and realistic. I can strongly recommend the Poldark series.
I loved the entire series- a must read!
A good historical fiction and easy to read .
I liked the way that this book upheld the virtues of courage, honor, and loyalty are upheld as desirable virtues. I found it refreshing that friendship and marriage are treated as desirable.
The characters are well developed, and the plot is interesting. One keeps reading to find out what happens next.
Loved the PBS series, love the book even more. I want to read All of them!
There’s a reason that this series has been done by Masterpiece Theater TWICE.
I am a big fan of the tv series so it’s been fun to read the novels
I loved the setting and the characters!
Better than the PBS series.
I LOVE HISTORICAL FICTION.
This was a great series, books 1-3, I couldn’t stop reading. The characters were intriguing, the description of Cornwall and the mines, their hard lives, the inferior medical care of that time and their day to day existence was fascinating. I felt like I was there. I would love to see the television series. If you like historical fiction, you will love these books.
I really loved these books, historical fiction. Great memorable characters.
Excellent series. Also a miniseries in PBS.
Currently reading it now. Enjoying it immensely. I have also watched the whole series on PBS. Historical & romantic with tragic happenings too. Love the characters.
an epic drama along the lines of “Captains and Kings” and “Rich Man Poor Man”. and the DVDs are likely at your local library for free or a nominal amount.
If you enjoyed the PBS series, you will enjoy reading the complete story again.
I read the entire series every few years. Never gets old!
And I thought that the PBS programs were great…. This is truly a classic. I love historical fiction and this book has transported me to the Cornwall of the 1780’s. The PBS series isn’t completely accurate although it’s close enough. I was impressed with a reference to the early days of our USA where the author compares our country, dividing itself into states, to the city-states of medieval Italy. Graham also calls his England an “old enemy” of France while the young USA is their “new friend” who has “tempted France to pour out her gold and men to help American freedom.” The war debt of France and the idea of revolution will soon affect the people of France in ways that no one has anticipated. This is something I haven’t even thought about since graduation. For me, it’s easier to pick up this knowledge from a book because I can concentrate on it better than I can from a TV show (even a very good one such as “Poldark”). Happily, I have been gifted by this set of twelve books and I’m anticipating many happy hours in reading them all !
I have read all his books. Sad there will not be more in the future. Loved the TV adaption too.
Currently reading and can’t put it down! Loved the t.v. series.
