I recently finished reading Polar Bear Dawn by Lyle Nicholson. This is the first novel in the Bernadette Callahan Detective Mystery/Thriller series. Who is killing workers from a company supporting oil camps in the Arctic and Northern Canada. More importantly, why? Will Canadian Detective Bernadette Callahan answer these questions before she’s sidelined in favor of other agencies? Find out how she works with an Alaskan detective named Frank Mueller and others to piece things together.
Lyle has created an excellent plot with plenty of twists and turns which will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next. There’s a bevy of characters to love or hate, depending upon your viewpoint. For those who love action and adventure with plenty This is the first novel I’ve read by Lyle and it’s definitely not going to be the last as I already purchased the sequel.
An attention to detail, with a twisty, complex plot, and wonderful characters will keep you turning pages on this book.
Polar Bear Dawn is the first book in the Bernadette Callaghan series written by Lyle Nicholson. The story is intriguing and suspenseful. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Detective Bernadette Callaghan lives and works in the male dominated culture. Yet, she does not allow her environment diminish her abilities to think outside the box to solve her cases. An enjoyable read.
Very interesting and action packed
If you like a book where the story isn’t finished (without being advertised as “first in a trilogy or whatever) and a man writes from a female perspective, where the female (law enforcement officer) constantly eats junk food then obsesses about her weight, this is the book for you. Oh yeah, and her immediate assessment of every man she meets is how hot he is.
I enjoy the main female protagonist storyline and the ongoing interactions with the “bad guys”.
I enjoyed reading this book. It kept me intrigued throughout. After finishing it I realized that there’s more to come so I’ll be looking for more books.
Easy to read. Sort of predictable but a fast moving plot
Didn’t want to put it down – couldn’t wait to see what the next chapter would bring.
This is about a female native detective who uncovers a plot to sabotage oil fields in Canada and Alaska. The saboteur is a Vietnam veteran and his army buddies. He has invented a product that turns water into a gel. The saboteur was hired by a bunch of stock market manipulators.
Great characters solving two crimes at the same time in two countries.
Unique story under current times and a good read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Sinister intrigue in the oil camps of Alaska and Northern Canada.
Murders in the widely separated oil camps of Alaska and northern Canada are found to be linked. Detectives from both areas must come together to solve case. The oil companies think the deaths are bad for publicity and want the cases solved quickly. The detectives are pressured to find the simplest explanation and close the case, but they find a more diabolical scheme to control the oil market is behind the killings. The detectives worked tirelessly to solve the case before oil production is catastrophically disrupted by high tech villains. This was an interesting read that moved at a good pace with enough twists and turn to keep me interested. I liked the characters, but never felt like I really got to know them. I also didn’t feel that there was much connection between the good guys in the story. I think a little more connection would have made the story more interesting.
Good reading.
Intriguing
Great suspense & characters
kept my attention
Like a weaver setting his loom, so did this author in setting the stage with the many players and situations. Once the framework was in place, the weaving began and picked up the pace ever faster until the plot was revealed then the action and reaction of the characters. It all ended neatly tied up, sort of. The end definitely leads into the next story! If you like complex plots, a variety of interesting characters, and a lot of firepower, you would probably like this book!!
I really enjoyed reading this book.
