Will Mary be able to solve the murder before her husband returns home? Or will the killers hiding behind the mask of simple, small-town people grab Mary and pull her into a dark closet and close it forever?
Mary Holland is excited about the winter pie eating contest. She loves the contest because everyone knows she bakes the best apple pies. Mary is also exuberant at the news of her husband … exuberant at the news of her husband being sent back to the U.S. to serve out the rest of the war stateside. Life, as far as Mary is concerned, is returning back to normal. That is, until a poisoned pie kills a stranger in town.
Thrust into a confusing mystery, Mary sets out to capture the killer but soon becomes entangled in a complicated web holding more than one hungry spider. With news that her husband is returning home for a two-week furlough, Mary has twenty-four hours to figure out the murder case and set a trap to capture the real killer. Unfortunately, a hometown murder that seemed simple at first quickly turns into a pie eating mess. With the help of Betty—and an unexpected friend—she dares the icy fingers of winter and steps into a fierce storm.

So many red herrings! Lies, deceit, messed up family issues just fill this story from beginning to end! Mary and Betty worked really hard getting the truth out of all the players in this book. It was super fun going back in time too, like watching Mayberry on tv. 🙂

Yet another great book in this series. Mary is excited about the winter pie eating contest and getting her pies in there. An ex school girl is seen riding around town with a man whom no one seems to know. Loretta shows up at Mary’s house to buy a pie. Mary finds out that her husband is finally coming home so she must solve the murder so that he doesn’t know that she’s been doing that.

Although injured, Mary‘s husband, John, is on his way home from the war. While waiting for him, Mary attends the Annual Winter Pie Eating Contest. However, one of the contestants dies in front of them all and Mary is in the center of another mystery. I love the friendship between Mary and Betty and enjoy Wendy Meadows’ fresh writing style.

It at last appears that pilot John might be on his way home. Naturally cataclysmic snowstorms, changing plans from Uncle Sam, and a bit of murder, betrayal and mayhem intervene
Betty and Mary do their best to get things wound up before John’s changing expected arrival. A powerful friendship between mostly fierce and strong women who have grown and changed over the years
A bit of clumsiness, occasional weak moments of befuddlement and fierce love and loyalty mark a bond that has strengthened as it endured.
Great KU historical mystery series!

Mary Holland is excited and has been getting her delicious apple pies prepared for the town’s Annual Winter Pie Eating Contest. Not only is she ready for the fun event, but she just got a letter that her husband, John, was being reassigned back to the states to begin training new pilots and would be coming home soon! As Mary and Betty walked in the cold toward the diner, they saw an old school rival, Loretta MacNight, coming out of a bakery. She saw them and made a sour face at them. No wonder no one liked her! They continued walking, but Mary looked back and saw Loretta getting into an old pickup truck instead of her usual Lincoln Continental convertible her wealthy parents gave her. She and a man drove off.
Sitting in the diner, Mary was surprised when Loretta showed up to pick up two dinner plates, sneered again at Mary, and climbed back into the old pickup truck. Wilma told her Loretta had been purchasing two dinner plates every night for two weeks. Strange!
Mary invited Betty to stay overnight with her, and they both went to Mary’s to enjoy a slice of pie. John called to say he would be home sooner than expected since he was given a two-week furlough. When someone knocked at the door, Mary was astounded to see Loretta. She had come there to buy a pie from her! The bakery in town was closed at this late hour and she didn’t want to wait until morning when it opened. Since she knew Mary had lots of pie for the contest the next day, she wanted her to sell one to her! This seemed very odd, but Mary gives her the pie. She noted that this time, Loretta came alone in her Lincoln.
The next day, a stranger competing in the pie eating contest keeled over as his face turned blue, and it was obvious he was dead! Mr. Chesterfield, the town’s pharmacist, walked over to the apple pie the strange man had been eating, one baked by Mary, picked it up, and smelled the contents, stating, “This pie… has been poisoned.” Can Mary and her best friend, Betty, solve this mystery and find the real killer?
This was a fun mystery where the killer seems obvious, but maybe that was too easy! Grab your copy and find out the mystery within the mystery and find out who murdered the strange man!

This is the first in this series that I have read. It takes place in Tennesse in the 1940s in a small town. Even with murder in the story, this was a fun read. I am looking forward to more stories in this series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.
This was a fun read. Set in the early 1940’s in TN, Mary & Betty are best friends who seem to fall into murders wherever they go. This is the first book I’ve read in this series and while the earlier murders were mentioned they didn’t detract from this one. The characters were good and the mystery was very involved with lots of people adding to it for their own agenda. All in all, a good read.

I received an advance copy from Booksprout. This is my honest review.
Step back in time and join Mary and her BFF Betty solve another murder. This mystery is full of false lies, desperate people and greed. Enjoy the simpler life in the 1940’s in the small town of Pineville. Simpler does not mean boring however, as mystery and mayhem seem to follow Mary everywhere. Looking forward to the next book in the series to see what California has in store for John and Mary. This book is a must read, add it to your TBR pile today and enjoy
24 hours to find a killer!
Set in the 1940’s wartime, this story starts out innocently enough but quickly turns to murder. A pair of super sleuths are on the case to get the murder solved quickly. What follows is a fast-paced and deadly investigation during a snowstorm that has a warm and cozy ending. Great read! I fully enjoyed it!
