Finnegan MacGillivray, red-haired, freckle-faced social pariah, finds solace in his mother’s garden while she entertains “dates” in his home. When an accident takes the life of a friend, Finnegan buries the evidence amid the purple dead nettle and bougainvillea, and unearths a treasure trove of human remains. Did his house rest atop an ancient burial ground? Or was there a killer tucking him into … into bed at night?
His fascination with bones grows as fast as his obsession with his mother. She rejects his advances, and he escapes to the other side of the country. Years later, he returns to his childhood home, to the secrets and the guilt and the bones — and to fulfill his destiny.

I loved reading this book. I found it to be very interesting and hard to put down.
This is a very different book and I found it quite intriguing. I like different kinds of stories and find serial killers (i.e. Dexter) quite interesting to study. So this book may not be for everyone but I enjoyed the twists and turns very much.
Very unusual but captivating book. Really enjoyed it
Weird and interesting.
I found this to be a very good read and highly recommend reading it. It has twist and turns and enough action to keep you interested in reading until the end. Going to get more books by this author.
This is a creepy story. Main character dreaming of sleeping with his mother?
Not for everyone.
Story went on to long. Was predictable what would happen next
Did not like at all! Unrealistic and poor writing.
Liked the book fast read.
Kept me guessing
It was a different type of story, disturbing but not scary. Everything happened so quickly and easily to the characters, no one ever got caught for their wrong doings, it made the story unrealistic but still intriguing, I wanted to know where the story would end. And then it did and it felt like a balloon deflated.
Good read, but did not like the ending.
This book was really haunting. It was a reminder of a Steven King type of book.
This book was definitely disturbing in so many ways but the characters really came to life. I do feel like the book stalled about three quarters through, though. The remaining character could have done more. He just kind of stalled.
Didn’t finish reading it
The story line was different, but believable. I felt so sorry for the main character when he was a child, which explains a lot about what happens. It was a interesting story & I would recommend it to readers.
Finnigan MacGillivray (say that three times fast) was raised by a single mother, a mother who conceived her son while working as a prostitute. Finnigan, or Finny Mac, as his mom used to call him, grows up to be one psychologically disturbed individual. How could he not? His mother was a serial killer, and he accidentally killed his best friend. But the garden Finnigan’s mother kept in the back yard always looked great. Must be the fertilizer, huh?

Julie Frayn has written a fun little book about psychosis, a mother’s love and forensic archaeology. The characters in this story are well crafted, and i enjoyed getting to know all of them. The story itself was quite unique, and Frayn kept the storyline moving along very nicely. This was one book I could not stop reading, and I am looking forward to reading more of her work.

Didn’t much like the ending, but the read was a good one.
