OLD FLAMES NEVER DIE . . . Cassie Armstrong has plenty to atone for. The daughter of the most immoral researcher ever to pick up a scalpel, she’s determined to use her own brilliance in genetics to repair the damage her family has done to the paranormals. Especially Dante, the first of the phoenixes, the one they call the Immortal. He’s been haunting her dreams since she was a little girl, and … little girl, and she’s been trying to ease his pain for almost as long. If only he remembered any of it . . .
Dante doesn’t know what Cassie’s story is. He almost doesn’t care. The minute he sees her, all he can think is mine. But there’s more to the pretty little doctor than meets the eye. And Dante isn’t the only one to notice. He can’t trust her, but he can’t stay away—and if he wants to learn her secrets, he’s going to have to fight like hell to keep them both alive . . .

Cassie Armstrong is trying to make up for what her father has done to humans and paranormals. The experiments he’s done, the people he’s kidnapped, the torture and death. And let’s not forget the sadistic experiments on his own children, Cassie and her brother. Man, what a douchebag. Anyway, he’s dead and she needs to find Dante. The oldest phoenix shifter she’s ever known. She needs his help, but since his escape from the prison called Genesis he’s been hard to get to and when she does, he dies, burns, rises, and loses his memory. So Cassie has to start all over again. It’s such a bummer. Especially since he doesn’t remember her and she loves him.
Dante is old. Very old. And he’s been imprisoned at Genesis for nearly all of Cassie’s lifetime. Problem is when he dies, burns, and rises he doesn’t remember his past. It usually comes back, but he’s powerful and not too worried about it. Until she comes along. Cassie. She seems familiar, but before he can decide if she is the enemy, men are trying to capture them both. He never runs from trouble but she begs him to, so they run. But trouble follows.
Ok, so Dante is pretty unlikeable. But he has his reasons. One redeeming quality is he doesn’t have any desire to hurt Cassie. Which is a good thing. Cassie is a bit of a bleeding heart, but not too much so. It does lead her back into trouble which Dante doesn’t understand. They have a lot of issues to work out and they have to do it on the fly. Because, you know, bad guys chasing them. This story has a great world and characters and a decent plot. Ending seemed a bit much, but it’ll do. I enjoyed it.
A great dramatic read with an alpha phoenix shifter whose memory gets wiped after every resurrection, and the brilliant scientist who is desperate to save him from government experimentation.
Playing with Fire, the 3rd and last book in the Phoenix Fire Series, was a great wrap up for a awesome series. I really liked both Cassie and Dante. They had great chemistry together. I loved the forgotten lover plot. I ached for Cassie. I hurt for her when Dante didn’t remember her. I loved getting to catch up with Cain and Eve. I would have liked to have seen a little of the couple from book 2. I thought the epilogue was sweet. I will say that I felt like this series wasn’t really done. I know this was the last book but I felt like the series still had more to give. I felt like Trace should have gotten his own book.
Playing with Fire by Cynthia Eden is book Three in the Phoenix series. This is the story of Cassie and Dante. I haven’t yet read the previous books, so for me this was a standalone book.
We learn that Dante is a Phoenix that Cassie’s father was doing experience on along with herself. Cassie had tried to help him as best she could and has always loved Dante. Dante when he would come back to life would sometimes not remember her which leads to Cassie feeling that he doesn’t return the same feelings. Dealing with the aftermath of the death of her father and what has been done to them…can they find a happy ended?
Exciting read!
3.75 stars– PLAYING WITH FIRE is the third and final instalment in Cynthia Eden’s contemporary adult PHOENIX BURN paranormal, romance series focusing on a group of enhanced supernatural and humans. This is scientist Cassie Armstrong, and phoenix Dante’s story line. PLAYING WITH FIRE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
SOME BACKGROUND: Years earlier, an experiment to make the perfect super soldier went horribly wrong when the people in control when above and beyond their designated tasks. The Phoenix Burn series focuses on the continuing experiments and on-going problems of the affected supernaturals and humans.
NOTE: Due to the story line content including torture and bloodshed, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from several third person points of view including Dante and Cassie PLAYING WITH FIRE follows the second chance (of sorts) relationship between scientist Cassie Armstrong, and phoenix Dante. Years earlier Cassie Armstrong, the daughter of a brilliant but insane scientist saved Dante, on more than once occasion, but with each incarnation Dante remembered little about his past. Fast forward to present day wherein Cassie will continue to track down the man that she loves in order to help others who have been affected by the cruel and unusual experiments. What ensues is the rekindling friendship, and building love between our leading couple, and the potential fall-out as betrayal and heartbreak continue to follow in their wake.
PLAYING WITH FIRE is a story of power and revenge; betrayal and pain; destiny and love. Cynthia Eden brings together an odd assortment of supernatural beings including purebreds and hybrids, all of whom must work together to protect themselves from the ultimate evil. Vengeance, deception, dishonesty and lies are around every corner as Cassie tries desperately to help the people she loves but in doing so hurts the man that calls to her heart. The premise is dramatic; the romance is fated; the characters are numerous, intense and energetic. There are a number of characters whose story has yet to be told-I am hoping the author considers picking up where the series left off.
Obsession. That’s the word that sticks out to me about this book. Dante is obsessed with Cassandra even when he doesn’t remember her. He’s a Phoenix and when he dies, he loses his memory but never the pull to her. He’ll follow her to the ends of the earth.
Cassie is trying so hard to right the wrongs of her father. There has to be a cure for what he did to his victims and she will do anything to help them. She thinks Dante is the key but every time he dies, he loses his memory of her. She’s been in love with him since she was eight years old and her heart breaks every time he forgets her.
I like the twist to this story. Dante has a dark side and he’s willing to do anything to keep Cassie. He’s cold and you can’t tell if his obsession to Cassie is just possession or more. When he dies and rises again, you never know what he’s going to be like. I loved it!
This is Book 3 in the Phoenix Fire series. You don’t have to read the first two books, but it does make a lot more sense if you do read them. I didn’t read them, so I was a little confused on a few things, but I still really enjoyed the book. I just have to go back and get the other two now. Cassie’s father was part of a group called Genesis and they experimented, so they could make a super Army. Now Cassie’s in Chicago trying to find Dante. The story goes on from there in a very exciting way. There’s a lot of action and excitement from the beginning to the end. You will enjoy reading every twist and turn involving Cassie and Dante. It had a very good ending to the series. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book that I got from Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cassie may have been the daughter of one mad man and the sister of another, but she is a truly caring person. She continues to try and repair some of the damage her father has wrought amongst human and paranormal “volunteers” alike. But once again fate plays fickle and she once again faces Dante, the man she has secretly loved for some time. But as a Phoenix, when Dante dies, he is reborn afresh with one slight wrinkle…he forgets his memories of her. He can remember her eventually but it breaks her heart each time.
Dante knows that Cassie is special to him but as the story unfurls we also learn that even though her father experimented on her from the time she was a young girl, she already had a little something special in her! No Dante doesn’t know if what he feels is real or just her own special abilities manipulating him.
Dante is a real older man! I loved the way he soaked up technology, but kept the old alpha male grunts etc! His actions around Cain were especially aggressive and just a little bit panty melting! I loves meeting the other patients Cassie has and their struggles. I us admit I had a bit of a lump in my throat during the epilogue, I just loves the way they created their own little family.
I had not read the other books in thi series but that didn’t hamper me in enjoying the story. Well worth a read!
AN IMPRESSIVELY POWERFUL, SEXY, ADDICTIVE story by Cynthia Eden! Even though this is the third book in Miss Eden’s Phoenix Fire series, this is the first one in it that I have read and HOT DAMN AM I HOOKED! I D-E-V-O-U-R-E-D this book in a little over a day! It was HEART SMASHING GOOD with a hero who had a RED HOT obsession and a AMAZING WOMAN WHO WASN’T AWARE OF HER OWN POWERS. I LOVED Dante! He seemed so cold and had killer instincts that dictated he kill first but with Cassie, things start to shift and change. What started out as a white hot obsession turned into something much more powerful…love. And Cassie…she was extraordinary in my opinion, tough, sweet, caring and willing to do ANYTHING to save paranormals that her father tortured and experimented on…like I said, she is EXTRAORDINARY!
There was so much adrenaline pumping action that it was hard to keep still. And plenty of spell-binding lust and fabulous characters that I am now completely obsessed over. I am KICKING myself for not finding this series before now. Playing With Fire is THRILLING…TEMPTING….DARK AND WICKED! I am in stunned AWE!
Playing With Fire gets a HIGHLY ADDICTIVE AND CERTAINLY SEXY FIVE SHOOTING STARS!
Couldn’t wait to read the conclusion of the three-part series! Wrapped up some of the story lines from previous books and showed the worth of all the paranormals.
Awesome read
