Play to Win is the first in a brand new hockey romance series centered around the Wynn family members. A family who lives and breaths hockey. Also, quite the dysfunctional family with many issues between which made for some interesting and hilarious interactions.
This first installment is about Theo Wynn and Lacey Olson.
This book started out with all the makings of an interesting, flirty and entertaining romance. I love this genre and I love this trope. An oopsy marriage. Don’t ask me why. It’s totally far-fetched but I love it when done right. And I’d say this author accomplished that.
When they first met, it was fun and sexy and I loved the first part of the book when they were spending most of their time together and getting to know each other.
When they finally get to California and Theo starts his job and is working long hours, trying to prove himself, it was realistic.
It’s silly when you read a book and the characters seem to not have jobs or are home all day lounging.
That said, I just loved them together and wished we had a little more of that and really get to see them falling love along the way.
As it was simply mentioned, that they were hanging out and bonding and such.
That‘s just my personal preference; I like dialogue and banter and a lot of it.
There was so much I liked about this book, it’s fun and entertaining with some crazy humor that had a smile on my face. The side characters were a bit much at time. but I grew to love them and can’t wait to read more about them in the upcoming books in the series.
I received a free advanced copy of this book from NetGalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
In this new series, author Kelly Jamieson, moves her focus from the Chicago Aces to California and the Wynn family hockey dynasty. (Jackson wynn is still with the Aces) She thoughtful includes a family tree of sorts at the begining. While this book is not a page turner in the traditional suspense/thriller genre, the chapters flow so perfectly into the next, that I found it very hard to put down. Like the other books, endearing characters and a compelling plot written in an entertaining manner make this book a terrific read.
At 28, Theo Wynn, whose hockey carrier was ended by a flying punk into his eye, has been working in Los Vegas as the assistant GM for the Mustangs, when his grandfather offers him the position of GM for the his California Condors. Theo had previously created with a friend Coast 2 Coast, a hockey analytics business and when he accepts the position, he intends to use analytics. There is all kinds of weird family feuds going on in the Wynn family, including him not speaking to his brother PJ, who he found his girlfriend cheating with. On his last evening in town, the coaches and players take him out to Silk, a high end cocktail lounge, where he sees Lacey, a waitress being hassled by some customers, and then being fired for it. When he invites her to join them, while plying her with drink, he finds out that her twin brother owes money to a bookie and was trying to pimp her out for the debt. He convinces her to come with him to California for her own safety and they end up having a quickie “wedding of convenience”, as he also wants to go home with a beautiful bride to shove under his brother’s nose. With the initial idea of keeping their relationship platonic, but having a strong longing for each other, how long can they keep their hands to themselves?
Kelly Jamieson is an automatic buy for me. I have been reading since her first book. She can write a hockey romance like no other. This is the first book in the Wynn Hockey series, and I’m so excited that she has another series to read!
To say that this book was awesome is a short coming, I read it in about 5 hours, with feeding the family in that time. I just love the dynamic of Theo and Lacey’s story. They banter back and forth with the not so funny jokes, strange statistics, wise cracks, and some filthy talk as well.
Cannot wait for book 2 in this great new series!
When I see that Kelly has a new series starting I am jumping on it ! This is the first book in the series following the Wynn family . They are royalty in the hockey world and I am loving them.
This is Theo and Lacey’s story. It is filled with fun, steam, drama and witty banter !!!
Theo comes from a family that has so much intense drama and friction. Theo has found himself retired early from the game and is now using his love of numbers and management in a new role as GM of a family company. Lacey is just making her way in the world she has a twin brother a few friends in the Vegas area but is sometimes barely getting by. She would do anything for her brother but when she finds he is hot water with a bookie and they are now knocking on her door for the funds she realizes she doesn’t have a plan. A chance meeting at the club she works at , a man that wants to help and a crazy plan ….it’s a go!!! She moves with Theo out of necessity and it soon becomes apparent that they just might be good for each other in so many ways!!!!!

It’s always a great day when a new hockey romance from Kelly Jamieson hits my Kindle. Play to Win is the first book in her series about a hockey dynasty and there is so much to like about it!
First and foremost, if you’re a hockey fan and a romance fan and you look for the two to come together in a story in a smart way, Kelly is the author for you. I’m pretty sure I sound like a broken record, but she always integrates the game so well into her story that hockey and romance go hand in hand. There are so many sports romances that you could easily remove any reference to sports and it wouldn’t affect the story at all. Not so with Jamieson’s books, especially with Play to Win, where readers get a look at the inner workings of hockey management.
In Play to Win, Jamieson lays the groundwork for a dynastic series. The Wynns are hockey royalty and legendary for being just a bit crazy. When Theo is hired by his granddad, Bob, to be general manager of the California Condors it creates a new rift between Bob and his sons Matthew and Mark. Throw in Theo’s much younger aunt and uncles, a brother that betrayed him, and a cousin or two and you’re looking at an endless amount of down and dirty storytelling to come. Truthfully, I couldn’t get enough of this family and wanted more, more, more.
I loved Theo. A former athlete who suffered a career-ending injury, he’s returned to his first love: numbers, statistics, and analytics. He’s carrying quite a bit of insecurity on his shoulders, especially after he finds his girlfriend and brother in a compromising position. Already a workaholic who feels he needs to prove himself, Theo digs deeper into his career with no time for fun or spontaneity. Being in his head (as with all of Jamieson’s books, Play to Win is told in alternating 1st person POVs} was so much fun-if you like stats, which I do. Honestly, I could have read about Corsi and Fenwick and the salary cap until I was blue in the face. That Jamieson made it entertaining and educational was just perfect. Truthfully, I know I can always count on her for this.
Lacey Olson is the woman who turns Theo’s life upside down. They meet in a rooftop bar in Las Vegas where she’s working as a waitress and a few hours later they’re married. It’s this sort of spontaneity that she brings to Theo’s life, pulling him out of his shell, leading him to reconnect with his family. That it’s his idea to get married proves just how big an impact she has on him. Lacey has her own family issues, which result in her saying yes to Theo and running away to California. But, what I really liked about these two as a couple is that they’re perfect for each other despite being at completely different places in their lives. Theo has a plan, Lacey is just deciding on one.
While there’s a bit of angst towards the end, the road to romance between Theo and Lacey is pretty cut and dry. They’re great together, but I found them a bit boring as a headline couple. I would have loved a little more conflict instead of feeling like much of their interaction was just a repeat of the chapter before.
Overall, I do recommend this book. I honestly can’t wait to read more about the Wynn family.
3.5 stars. Heat level: 3.5
I received a copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for honest feedback.
3.5 Stars
I’m a fan of Kelly Jamieson’s hockey romances, so when I saw that she was releasing a new series it’s safe to say I was intrigued and quite eager to read Play to Win.
The Wynn family is large, complex and completely dysfunctional. There is so much jealousy, anger, hurt and betrayal that revolves around the various members of this family, not to mention their competitive natures it’s sure to be an interesting series.
What starts as a marriage of convenience between two opposites, was quite different to the hockey story I was expecting.
Theo Wynn is a former NHL player, so he buff and brawny, but also a bit of a nerd. He’s quite the contradiction and has a point to prove to his family, in particular his younger brother. I really liked his drive, intelligence and determination.
Lacey is Theo’s opposite whilst he organised and goal orientated, she’s more flighty and free spirted but still very honest which I really liked.
With all the drama and large family, it took me a while to figure out how the characters fit in and are connected, but now i’m quite intrigued by this dysfunctional dynastic family, and look forward to reading the next Wynn Hockey title.
What’s not to love about hockey, hot players and awkward situations that turn into great love stories. This is the first book in a new hockey series and is fantastic. The characters have you laughing, screaming and swooning. The storyline is addicting and you won’t want to put down your kindle, needing to know how the drama turns out. This is a series I cannot wait to continue. It’s definitely a must for all sports romance fans.
With “Play To Win” Kelly Jamieson launches her Wynn Hockey series, in which Theo Wynn, son and grandson of hockey royalty, wants to prove himself off the ice.
Hockey is in his blood, so when an injury cuts his career short Theo decides to take an assistant management role with the Las Vegas NHL team. But when his grandfather offers him the GM position in his team, Theo can’t resist the chance to prove his numbers’ skills to his family, particularly his backstabbing brother. He’s only lacking a beautiful woman by his side.
Cocktail waitress Lacey Olson was just doing her job when her brother’s bookies came to collect his debt. Fortunately a sexy stranger intervenes. Unfortunately she now needs a new job and a change in address.
Theo can’t help himself and continues to help her out by offering her to take her with him to California. As they get to know each other over one too many drinks they also decide to get a quickie Vegas marriage, and what starts as a fake relationship turns into a connection neither can deny.
Set against the inner working of hockey management and the sunny LA beaches, the story is a pleasant opposites attract romance of two people who find in each other exactly what they need and would have imagined.
Even though Theo and Lacey’s interactions feel a bit forced right after they get hitched, perhaps because they truly don’t know each other, eventually their relationship flows easily with sweet sexiness. The secondary characters, mostly comprising of the very dysfunctional Wynn clan, are numerous and therefor get a bit lost and I found it difficult to remember who’s who, but there’s certainly enough drama to fuel the entire Wynn Hockey series.
Play To Win is book #1 of the Wynn Hockey series by Kelly Jamieson. It is a standalone contemporary hockey romance, told by both points of view with a happy ending.
After a side lining injury forced him to retire from hockey Theo Wynn found another way to experience success in the hockey world, by being the general manager of his grandfather’s Los Angeles Condors. His new job has come with a painstaking cost though, when you go head to head against your fathers team it tends to ruffle feathers and stir up loads of drama amongst the family. But he’s not about to back down from them, he plans on showing him that he can be as relevant off the ice as he was on it. The only thing he is missing to complete the happy little picture is a beautiful wife to dangle off his arm.
Enter Lacey Olson, the moment he comes to her rescue at the lounge she is slinging drinks in, he knows he has found his missing link, she is beautiful, and looking for an escape. Now he just has to figure out how to convince her to play along, and keep the sparks bouncing around between them at bay!
Play to Win kicks off a sexy new hockey romance themed series from Ms. Jamieson, and I have to say she picked the perfect starting point with Theo! His story was all kinds of steamy and dramatic, it tugged on the heartstrings, and kept me engaged the whole way through. It also laid a foundation for future installments, and left me aching to learn more about this family! I am excited to see which one of Wynn family members graces the pages of the next installment, this family really has an interesting story to tell. And a whole lot more healing and making amends ahead of them… which means lots more emotional heart squeezing stories to come!! Highly recommend this one, it’s a perfectly crafted romance loaded with swoons and feels!!
I requested an advance copy of this title from NetGalley, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
A great start to a series but can be read as a standalone. Theo just took a job that puts him in the middle of a long standing family fued. His family is ridiculous with they things they say to each other and accuse each other of. You want to find out what truths and secrets they are hiding. Theo and Lacey make an impulse decision that leads to more. They have ups and downs on the way but they get their happily ever after. I love how they bring out pieces of each other that they didn’t know needed to be brought out. Such a sweet romance story of growth, love, and understanding.
It’s clear from the start that this series will be about the Wynn family. I loved the family tree in the beginning, but even with that help it’s hard to keep everyone apart. There are a lot of unique relationships and the family is quite big, so it was hard to keep them all in mind. I’m sure once I’ve read a couple more books in this series, I will be a pro.
Play to Win focuses on Théo Wynn. He’s always worked hard and is really smart. Théo had a short hockey career, but after an unfortunate injury, he had to work behind the scenes. His grandfather offers him to manage the hockey team he owns. This is a dream for him, but he know it’s going to cause a lot of drama in his family.
Lacey doesn’t have a lot of family left and when her twin brother messes up once again, things get dangerous. Meeting Théo at her job in Vegas was probably perfect timing, because who knows what would’ve happened if he hadn’t been there? After having a fun night together, he offers her a deal. Come to LA with him and pretend to be his wife. She’ll get away from the people after her brother and he won’t feel like such a loser seeing his family again.
I was expecting this to be the cliché story we have read a thousand times. And while that happens in many ways in this story, these characters and their story is just so much fun. Lacey and Théo definitely have a connection, but it’s not an insta-love one that I can’t stand. They’re attracted to each other, but while reading we slowly seeing them fall in love. I think that was my favorite part.
Théo is a hard worker and has always had to work hard for everything, so he has a hard time letting go. Everything needs to be planned and just having fun isn’t something he normally does. It’s fun watching him let loose and enjoying himself with Lacey around.
Lacey has always worked really hard, so actually letting someone take care of her is hard. I think Lacey is really brave though. I can’t imagine how hard it was to let her brother face his problems the way she did. After losing everything she’s known, she really bounces back. Lacey is caring and smart. She adapts fast and makes friends really easily.
The romance in this book is really sweet and the family drama is extreme! I have never read about a family like this! It’s interesting though and I’m curious to see how everything in this family will continue. I also enjoyed the hockey aspects. The romance didn’t take over and I even learned some things I never knew. There was a great balance of romance, sports and family.
Play to Win is a book I read in one sitting and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next books in this series. If you’re looking for a sports romance with great characters, a family with lots of drama, humor, romance and even some hockey, this book is for you!
When I saw that Kelly Jamieson had a new series out, I was pumped. I was disappointed when the Aces Hockey series ended. I was also wondering when the next series was going to start. So, when I saw the book up for review on NetGalley, I pounced on it. I am glad that I did. Play to Win is an excellent start to what I hope is going to be an excellent series.
Theo Wynn was forced to give up professional hockey after an eye injury. Not to be deterred, he became the GM of an expansion hockey team based out of Las Vegas. Theo’s grandfather approached Theo with a job offer. Become the GM for his hockey team, the California Condors. Theo accepted the offer but was aware of the backlash that it would cause. When he meets Lacey and hears her story, Theo has a proposition for her. Become his “fake” wife to show his family that he made it. But can Theo keep Lacey at arms length? Or will he fall for her?
Lacey Olson is between a rock and a hard place. Her brother has stolen all the money in her checking account and disappeared. He also tries to pimp her out to his bookie to pay off his debt. She wasn’t expecting her brother’s bookie to show up at her job in a cocktail lounge. She wasn’t expecting the cute customer she was serving to step in and comfort her when she gets fired. She also wasn’t expecting to accept Theo’s crazy proposition. Or have a quickie Vegas wedding. Can Lacey go through with the charade? Or will she fall hard for Theo?
I liked Theo even if I thought he was too uptight. I understood why he didn’t want to jump in the pool with his clothes on. But I didn’t understand why he was so anal about suitcase packing. His horror in watching Lacey pack was amusing. I did enjoy watching his character grow in this book. He went from an uptight, grudge holding guy to a more laid back version of himself. Lacey was good for him.
I loved Lacey. She was one of the most easy going, go with the flow characters that I have read. Not that she didn’t have issues. Because she did. It was the way that she chose to deal with her issues that endeared her to me. She chose to look at the sunny side of things. Even her relationship with her brother (who I didn’t like). But, she wasn’t a pushover. She ruled when she met Theo’s ex. I did a “You go girl“.
Theo’s family wasn’t perfect. They were dysfunctional. Of course, not every family has a suggested gold-digger. Or sons’ suing their father. Or brother’s stealing girlfriends. But that’s what made this book fun to read.
Unfortunately Lacey’s family was all too realistic. Having an addict in your life is draining, emotionally and financially. The author was able to capture it perfectly.
I liked that Play to Win is a romance that didn’t have Instalove. Sure, Theo and Lacey got married the night they met. But the author chose to make up for that by having them build their relationship. Loved it!!
The sex scenes were steamy, once they had sex. I did roll my eyes when Theo and Lacey made the “no sex” pact. That screamed that they were going to have sex, but not right away. When they finally did bump uglies, it was explosive. I also liked how the author had Theo be on the receiving end of something kinky. That sex scene was through the roof!!
I loved the ending of Play to Win. Handsdown, it was one of the better endings that I have read. The talk that JP gave Theo was epic. What Lacey was knitting was epic. Actually, I was laughing my fool head off at that. Then I went to google it. Note to self: Never google that again. Images are forever seared into my brain. But it was the epilogue that made the book. Loved it. I also loved how it set up Book 2. Which I can’t wait to read.
Lacey had no idea what she was in for when she met Theo Wynn. He was out for his last night in Vegas before moving to California to start his new job as GM for the Los Angeles Condors. Lacey finds out that her brother is in more debt that she can even contemplate and the thugs after him was to use her as payment. Theo steps in and so begins their journey. Theo was honest and said he wanted Lacey to bring to his next family function so he didn’t have to face his brother, JP and the woman he stole from him, Emma. I wasn’t quite prepared for the quickie wedding within hours of meeting each other, but for these 2 it worked. They could not have been more different in their life philosophies but they did bring out the best in each other. ‘
Kelly Jamieson did a great job of showing what a general manager of a hockey team does. Her stories usually center on the players, so this was an interesting change for me. Theo is a numbers guy and he needs that knowledge to help him figure out what he is going to do to get the Condors to be a winning hockey team.
The Wynn family has a lot of dysfunction in it. They sue each other, yell at each other and declare all out war on each other with no shame. In short, they are a hoot to read. There is no filter with them and it is interesting to see how they interact with each other. Lacey only has her twin brother to rely on and, suffice to say, that is not working out well for her. I did like how she made new friends and seemed to put herself out there and now just wallow in what happened to cause her to have to flee Vegas. The fact these 2 learn to depend on each other was pretty significant in this story. I won’t give away what happens, but it was a good read. I am quite interested to see where Kelly Jamieson goes with this series.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.
Théo Wynn is part of the Wynn hockey dynasty. Everyone in his family has something to do with hockey, wether they play it, own it, manage it or work in the back offices. On top of that, there is plenty of drama to go around. When his grandfather approaches him to come and manage his team the Los Angeles Condors, Théo decides to make the move from Las Vegas. Right now he’s an assistant manager and the thought of making all the top decisions, excites him. He’s always been a numbers guy, but that’s not how he started. Playing hockey was his first love, till the accident when a puck hit his eye. At one point they thought he would lose his eyesight, thank goodness that didn’t happen, even thou he was never able to play professionally again. On his last night in Vegas, Théo goes out for drinks with his teammates.
When Lacey Olson finds out that her addicted gambling brother has emptied everything in her bank account again, she panics. How will she pay her rent. Lacey has been bailing him out since their mother passed away. A waitress in one of the more famous casinos in Vegas, she likes her job but not the long hours in high heels. On this particular night, Lacey is having a difficult time with a group of men that are looking for her brother, since he stiffed their bookie. Now they say she has to work for them as a prostitute to pay his debt. Théo, who was nearby heard all this transpiring and came to her rescue. If things couldn’t get any worse, she gets fired since those goons insisted she had stolen money from them. Now that they are threatening her, Lacey knows she needs to get out of dodge. When Théo invites Lacey to come with him to LA till her brother gets his act together, she thinks he’s crazy, but then it got crazier. He proposes that they get married!
This is another hit for Kelly Jamieson! There is nothing she can’t write!
I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Great book that kicks off what should be an amazing new series from this author. I love a Kelly Jamieson hockey romance but with this one we get a different view into the hockey world with insight into team ownership. The Wynn’s are hockey royalty and Theo Wynn is taking his place now that his playing days are over. Doing things his way are important so he needs his grandfather off his back. That’s how when he meets Lacey in Vegas he comes up with a crazy plan for a fake relationship and a quickie Vegas wedding. That’s when the wild ride begins and all he can do is hang on! Don’t miss this one. It’s a fun read and I definitely recommend it.
A drunken Vegas wedding…the perfect start to a marriage! Ashley @ Carolina Chic’s Read
The first book in Kelly Jamieson new hockey series is a great start to the Wynn Hockey dynasty. This book has everything to make you want to keep turning the pages. Gambling addiction, bookies, cheating ex, dysfunctional family, a wedding of convenience, and some hockey thrown in to keep you wanting more. Lacey and Theo’s relationship shows that there is more than just work but you can have a balance with family and love. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
4 1/2 STARS!
With lots of drama, Kelly Jamieson kicks off a brand new hockey family saga with her latest release PLAY TO WIN. The characters are fairly well developed, and though we have a lot of family to get familiar with, the key players are drawn forward slightly in order to make several of the family members background until their time to shine comes up later. I loved Theo & Lacey’s story and look forward to getting to know JP in the next book in the series!
Las Vegas cocktail waitress Lacey Olson finds herself in need of a rescue from some very bad guys her brother is mixed up with. She just so happens to be serving a group of sexy hockey players when it all goes down and one steps forward to defend her honor. Before the night is over, they agree she’s coming with him to L.A. tomorrow … oh and they get married!
Theo Wynn might be an offspring of the famous Wynn hockey family, but his playing days are over thanks to an injury and he’s just trying to find some other way to fit in. He’s had some success in Vegas, and now his grandfather is handing over some of the reins in order to make him the GM of the Los Angelas Condors, but he’s going to have to buckle down and work hard to achieve the success he needs. Too bad he has a sexy bombshell of a temporary wife distracting him from work, but she’s a great support system when he has to walk into that dreaded family dinner that holds his former best friend brother cozied up to the girlfriend he stole out from under Theo!
I’ve been a fan of Kelly Jamieson’s for several years especially her BAYARD and ACES HOCKEY series so when I heard that she was coming out with another hockey series I was all over it.
PLAY TO WIN is the first in the brand new WYNN HOCKEY series, and boy does it start us off right. Not only do we have two wonderful Main Characters, Lacey and Théo, but we meet The Wynn family and boy oh boy you can tell they are just going to be a ton of fun getting to know!
Théo and Lacey aren’t your typical couple where they meet and fall in love and then they get married, nope not at all….and quite honestly that probably makes this story fun to read. You can feel the chemistry between the two right from the start which is always a plus, but there’s more than just the chemistry you feel the pain of what each of them are struggling with as well, and quite honestly that makes you never want the story to end. Kelly Jamieson did a wonderful job with not only giving us a great story but a story that has us wanting more of the crazy Wynn family. I for one cannot wait for IN IT TO WIN IT, which is due out in July 2019.
Great start to the new series, I love Théo and Lacey!!! This is an easy book to recommend to all lovers of sports romance as well as fans of Kelly Jamieson. Happy Reading!!!
**I have voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book for my Blog, Nadine’s Obsessed with Books**
Play To Win is a wild ride of hilarity, sweet romance, crazy family drama, and fantastic steam. Lacey and Théo are two total and complete opposites but they chemistry they have has sparks flying practically instantaneously. Their connection is practically electric with the heat that sizzles between them but there’s also a sweetness there that combined with that heat makes for a couple that’s so easy to love.
They seem to truly bring out the best in each other without even realizing it. She brings a lightness and fun to Théo’s structured and work obsessed world and he brings a kind of caring and protection to Lacey’s lonely one. Together they’re like two halves of a whole. I fell in love with not only these two but also this entire crazy hockey family and I can’t wait to see more of all of them!
Theo and Lacey meet in Vegas when Theo is on his way out of town to be the GM of his grandfathers hockey team. He likes what he sees when he meets her but knows that nothing can come of it BUT reasons out of their control make it to where she goes with him. They both have their reasons and they both have decisions to make.
Theo feels that he needs to show his family that he knows what he’s doing when it comes to being a manager and doing it all with a beautiful woman on his arm. When seeing his ex with his brother he finds that he just doesn’t care. The family dynamics in this book make me cringe, laugh, and make me look forward to seeing the rest of the family and their stories.
Will Theo and Lacey realize before it’s too late that what started out as helping each other that they’re falling for each other? Will they both be able to fulfill their dreams with each other or will they have to go their separate ways to achieve them?
