When cougar-shifter Lily Mason moves to Moonrise, Missouri, she wishes for only three things from the town and its human population. . . to find a job, to find a place to live, and to live as a human, not a therianthrope.Lily gets more than she bargains for when a rescue pit bull named Smooshie rescues her from an oncoming car, and it’s love at first sight. Thanks to Smooshie, Lily’s first two … Lily’s first two wishes are granted by Parker Knowles, the owner of the Pit Bull Rescue center, who offers her a job at the shelter and the room over his garage for rent.
Lily’s new life as an integrator is threatened when Smooshie finds Katherine Kapersky, the local church choir leader and head of the town council, dead in the field behind the rescue center. Unfortunately, there are more suspects than mourners for the elderly town leader. Can Lily keep her less-than-human status under wraps? Or will the killer, who has pulled off a nearly Pit Perfect murder, expose her to keep Lily and her dog from digging up the truth?
Fall in love with Lily Mason, the shifter who only wants to live as a human, and her pit bull Smooshie, a rescue dog who in the end may be the one doing the rescuing!
Book 1 of the Barkside of the Moon Mysteries from USA Today bestselling paranormal cozy mystery author Renee George, is an exciting tale of mystery and suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat. A clean read full of humor and small town charm, mystery, and even a little romance.

A great addition to a fun series. A lot of twists and unexpected turns. Still the same great characters with a few more thrown into the mix. Fast fun read. I’d recommend to anyone 13 and older.
Honestly I almost never read books with shifters, etc. The cover and the fact that there is a dog involved got me to get it!! What a darling, clean book this is! It was so good I actually went in and bought the 2nd in the series!
Lily Mason decided to leave the only place she ever knew–her parents had been murdered–and then so was her brother. She discovered that she had an uncle who lived in Moonrise–so off she went.
She got there and her car needed fixing. She left it at the garage in town and starting walking. She would need a place to live, a job and most importantly would have to learn how to hide that she was a shape shifter.
She left her car and started crossing the street—when suddenly she was pushed–by a big dog. She would have been run over-but the dog saved her life. She ended up adopting him!! What a big love bug that dog is–you are going to LOVE him! Of course she meets the guy who was walking him, or trying to catch up with him–the chemistry was immediate-but they kind of ignored it. He found out that she had no place to live and offered an apartment above the garage. He ran an animal shelter.
Plenty goes on–murder and mayhem. You will not stop reading this one until the end and like me will more then likely want to keep reading this series!
Lots of fun
don’t remember. did i read this book or not. if i started it, did i finish it? this may have been one of those books that is great to while away the time but leaves no impression. or maybe i haven’t read it yet, the cover looks familiar, but there are several that look that way
I loved the characters, especially the dog. the plot is fast-moving with lots of suspense, action and murder.
I had fun reading this series intro book… love mysteries with dogs and cats, and all critters in the story lines. Look forward to more in the pittie series 🙂
I just finished the whole series. Great fun, loved the humor, romance and story telling.
I enjoyed this book. it was refreshing in the way the main character was naive about the world we live in and we take for granted. I must admit, it was one of the few books I’ve read where I didn’t have it all figured out ahead of time! My favorite character I could almost say was Elvis the dog!
Maybe because her name was Lily and had four legged friends throughout, I really liked this one.
After the death of her last family member, or so she thought, Lily needed a change of scenery and decided to look up the uncle she did not know existed in a small town called Moonrise. Being a shifter in a town of humans was going to be challenging, but when her first day leads to her meeting Parker, that quickly results in Smooshie, her newly adopted dog. Well, Smooshie actually leads Parker to Lily, but the ending is still the same. Lily ends up with a dog and a place to stay when Parker learns Lily needs one. Running a shelter for pitties, Parker offers Lily the apartment over his garage. This works well as it is still fairly close to her uncle’s restaurant. Buzz never expected to see any family members in Moonrise, but quickly comes to accept Lily once he realizes how tenacious she can be after Parker gets accused of murdering the town harpy. Lily knows Parker is innocent and will stop at nothing to prove it. When the Sheriff is content with his choice of suspects to jail, Lily takes it upon herself to find the real killer and hopefully not get herself killed in the process.
As a Am Staff owner myself I enjoy when a writer highlights their quirky fun personalities. This was an enjoyable read that was entertaining and a quick middle of the week read for me. I recommend this book for it’s sheer enjoyment and lack of fuss.
An interesting take on shifters, different & fun, too.
snappy characters, a little too much beefcake. Liked the dogs. Appealing cover.
This was a sweet story even though it is a murder mystery. Great beach reading.
fun and easy to read likable characters
a gripping read
Great characters you care about, good plot and story. Burned through the first one and have bought the next 2.
A fun book to just relax with and read through in one setting. Strong character development—even for the dogs! It’s not the kind of book that has an underlying depth or message to take with you—strictly a book for entertainment—but It is upbeat and left me wanting to read the next book, which is starting out with promise.
Informative
This was the first time I’ve read any books by Ms. George and although this book did reference characters from another series, it was not obtrusive nor distracting. I really enjoyed the sweet relationship between the MC and her pit bull – especially how loving and supportive of each other they were. Also, the MC’s confrontation with the villains was quite chilling – especially when they justified their murderous actions.
It was my pleasure to receive this free ebook from the author and give my honest review.
A light read, but very amusing. The characters are well done. Loved Smooshie.
