Pioneer Yearning by Ramon Flightner is a highly emotional story that will have you wishing you could hug Niahm and reassure her that everything will be OK. I found myself hoping that she would realize that things were not her fault and that people love and respect her. This is a heart retching story, but it is also heart warming. I found the plot and characters to be well developed.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and I always review every book that I read. I recommend this one especially if you enjoy historical stories about pioneers and settlers in the early days of the United States.
Pioneer Yearning is the third book in The O’Rourke’s Family Montana Saga. Its setting is Fort Benton Montana Territory 1865.
Pioneering Yearning has an exciting storyline with a choice between two brothers to marry. Cormac is dependable, loving, and hard-working. Connor prefers the saloons and gambling halls instead of working. Both brothers had desired to marry Niamh O’Rourke. She selects Connor and ends up in a lousy marriage, which ends in death. Will Niamh find her way back to Cormac?
This series has been and will continue to be a delightful and entertaining read. The book covers are attractive, with each cover having an O’Rourke family man or a man who will become part of the O’Rourke family.
I look forward to each of these books in the series coming out and can hardly wait for the next one. I have read this book as an ARC read and feel it is a 5-star book.
The O’Rourkes are a delightful blend of unique personalities, all adjusting to life and trying to make their mark in the Montana Territory. Although it’s labeled book 3, it’s actually the fourth book in the series (counting the prequel which I highly recommend). This story centers around their daughter Niamh, a recent widow who has survived an abusive marriage.
Her once vibrant personality has been replaced with one of fear, mistrust, insecurity, and guilt. With a broken spirit, she and her young daughter return home. Her late husband’s brother has loved her for all the years they’ve known her. Niamh believes that no matter how much she returns his love, she’ll never be good enough for him or anyone.
The storyline deals with learning to overcome abuses of the past, allowing oneself to heal, and opening up a closed heart. The author aptly portrays the guilt of believing the abuse was justified. Continuing to rehearse past voices of accusations keeps Niamh from seeing herself clearly: as well as seeing hope for a better future. She fears that any marriage will only be a repeat of the past.
Ramona Flightner has skillfully given us a peek into the devastation wrought by abuse and the path necessary for deep healing. With sensitivity and openness she reveals the painful emotions that must be dealt with in order to be healthy and truly free.
I love this series. If you enjoy stories of families settling the western frontier in the 1800s, I believe you’ll like it too.
Heartrending and painful, Niamh’s story will ring true with anyone who has ever had to interact with a woman who has suffered abuse at the hands of her spouse. Cormac had always loved Niamh, but when she chose his brother over him, he vowed to keep his distance and be the brother-in-law she needed and uncle to her small daughter. However when Conner goes too far Cormac does what he can to protect her, but even that isn’t enough. When her husband eventually dies in shameful circumstances, it takes the whole O’Rourke family to help Cormac and Niamh to find a way towards each other. Dealing with the crushing despair and lack of self-confidence that comes as a result of domestic abuse, Niamh struggles to believe in herself or in Cormac’s declaration of love, that is until her late husband reaches out from the grave to punch her with an even worse punishment than she has had to endure until then. Seamus’ resolution for a difficult situation is hilarious but the results are proof of his wisdom. It is only when Niamh realises that there is a possibility of losing Cormac forever that she eventually weighs up the consequences of losing her one chance at being loved unconditionally. I laughed in parts and cried at others, as this well-written novel touched my heart and kept me engaged from the beginning to the romantic ending. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
A fantastic read that really inthralled me and pulled me in. The Author has done a fantastic job at bringing the story to fruition and the Characters are very real to me as I read the book. The was never a full moment. I definitely recommend
