It is November of 1880, and the future looks promising for Annie and Nate Dawson. Nate’s law practice is taking off. Annie has made the transition from pretend clairvoyant to a successful financial consultant, and as a couple, they are looking forward to spending their first Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays together. For Robert Livingston, the owner San Francisco’s newest grand emporium, the … emporium, the holidays are shaping up to be a dismal failure if he can’t figure out how to stop whoever is stealing from his department store, the Silver Strike Bazaar. When he hires the Dawsons to investigate, Annie and Nate discover that behind the doors of Livingston’s “Palace of Plenty,” nothing is quite what it seems.
Pilfered Promises, by USA Today bestselling author, M. Louisa Locke, is the fifth full-length historical mystery in the cozy Victorian San Francisco mystery series featuring Annie and Nate Dawson and their friends and family in the O’Farrell Street boarding house. Locke’s shorter works, found in Victorian San Francisco Stories and Victorian San Francisco Novellas, feature minor characters from the series.

This is a really good book in a great series.
It’s always nice to while away an afternoon or evening with one of M. Louisa Locke’s books. They just make you want to pour a cup of tea and allow yourself to be transported back to a slower, quieter time and let the wonderful characters draw you into their lives.
I enjoy these historical fiction romance, who done it novels.
It was a good read with multiple characters, each with thier own ongoing story, that work well together solving a current murder.
I liked that the main character was a very self-sufficient woman in 1880s San Francisco.
This book gives you a real feel of what life was like in San Francisco in the middle 1800s. It’s very entertaining and quite a good mystery.
I love all the books in this series. I enjoy the characters.
Liked it, although hard to keep track of all the different characters, as they are sometimes referred to formally, with full name, and sometimes with nicknames. Overall though, a sweet read.
This is the 5th in the series and I found each one to be a nice enjoyable read. They create a feel good feeling without being preachy or overly steamy. Certainly not a waste of time.
I like Miss Locke and will read all of her books that I can.
Loved this historical mystery. Felt like I was really in 1880’s San Francisco. Everyday life was described so vividly. Social attitudes so different and made for interesting story line.
I love this group of characters, the boarding house is starting to feel like home. Such good people and wonderful, heartwarming stories.
This book is an easy and entertaining read.
This is the second book in the series and funnily enough, I didn’t realize that when I got it. I enjoyed it very much
Have read most of this series. Have enjoyed them all. These are easy to read books and since I have read most of the series, the characters are familiar.
I enjoyed the cHaracters and thereto g of the story. Interesting plot with enough twists the keep me reading.
I like all the books in this series. This was a little different b/c the protagonist is now married. The author was able to integrate the husband (who has been in previous books, but with a lesser role) into the story more without taking away from Annie’s role. While there is an ensemble of characters (all of whom I find interesting & likable), Annie is the main character and her intelligence and drive are not overshadowed.
Likable characters and interesting story plots. I enjoy this series.
The series is fast-paced, and the characters are interesting. It just missed 5 stars as I figured out the ending.
I had the killer about half way through, but for the wrong reason. Kept changing my mind as the plot unfolded. Well told.
