It is November of 1880, and the future looks promising for Annie and Nate Dawson. Nate’s law practice is taking off. Annie has made the transition from pretend clairvoyant to a successful financial consultant, and as a couple, they are looking forward to spending their first Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays together. For Robert Livingston, the owner San Francisco’s newest grand emporium, the … emporium, the holidays are shaping up to be a dismal failure if he can’t figure out how to stop whoever is stealing from his department store, the Silver Strike Bazaar. When he hires the Dawsons to investigate, Annie and Nate discover that behind the doors of Livingston’s “Palace of Plenty,” nothing is quite what it seems.

I enjoy the historical details.
I love this series!
M. Louisa Locke strikes again. I love her Victorian San Francisco mysteries.
Nice read, but everything was a little too perfect. Still, one can pretend….
I have enjoyed this whole series and look forward to each new one.
I enjoyed the history and the way life was disscribed.
Independent woman of 1880’s loves an insecure young lawyer. She help0s him become more confident in his career and she is respected for her knowledge for business as her father’s daughter. She knows she can have faith in her judgment of herself and for others.
Nice Christmas read with lots of “holiday activities” in the plot. The characters are likeable and the plot, setting is interesting. There is a bit of tragedy in the death, but a sweet ending.
Always a fun read. Takes you back in time to life at the end of the 19th century.
I really enjoy this series!
I did enjoy reading this story. Well done. Enjoyed the interaction of all the characters.
I loved this book! The heroine is very relatable, being an Independence woman in the 1980 San Francisco male dominated world. There were several plots intertwined and I was drawn in and kept hanging until the very last moment!! I plan on getting every one of the series
I enjoy this author’s works. She appears to have really researched the backgrounds that surround interesting stories.
A very easy, pleasant read. Cute mystery w/a little historical perspective. Nothing serious or thought provoking, just a nice rainy day read. 🙂
This takes place in the late 1800’s in Victorian San Francisco. I enjoyed reading about the merchants and having lived in the area I found it entertaining.
It was an enjoyable read. I want to know and read more about the characters and their world. The only problem I had was there was some modern-voice issues. The issues were real to that time but the words and thoughts of the characters were expressed in a very 20-teens way…
Cozy mystery series. It’s light, in a historical setting, and an easy read.
I thoroughly enjoyed the historic information of the setting, allowing myself to put myself in the place of the characters and how they lived more than a century ago. The plot kept me guessing up until nearly the end, which heightened my enjoyment of the book!
PILFERED PROMISES M. Louisa Locke
Newlyweds Annie and Nate Dawson, a financial expert and a lawyer, are hired by a department store owner to explore financial irregularities and missing merchandise. Annie’s financial background is her cover as she conducts a wide-ranging investigation.
Followers of Locke’s San Francisco series will recognize Annie’s boarding house and its interesting denizens. They are respectable, and support each other with their interests and sills.
The operations of the 1880s department store, and its competitors, create a somewhat unpredictable narrative. Annie’s personal growth in her recent marriage creates a secondary story line.
Locke’s writing is careful and the book is well-edited. She structures her stories in a craftsmanlike manner. Her characters are so carefully drawn they rarely surprise. A comfortable read.
Always like this author. Good characters, just enough details. I prefer more period stories and this series fits the bill.
