Picking up where her modern classic The Bean Trees left off, Barbara Kingsolver’s bestselling Pigs in Heaven continues the tale of Turtle and Taylor Greer, a Native American girl and her adoptive mother who have settled in Tucson, Arizona, as they both try to overcome their difficult pasts.Taking place three years after The Bean Trees, Taylor is now dating a musician named Jax and has officially … musician named Jax and has officially adopted Turtle. But when a lawyer for the Cherokee Nation begins to investigate the adoption—their new life together begins to crumble.
Depicting the clash between fierce family love and tribal law, poverty and means, abandonment and belonging, Pigs in Heaven is a morally wrenching, gently humorous work of fiction that speaks equally to the head and the heart.

I hate to admit this: I’d never read anything by Barbara Kingsolver until I saw an article about her new book on Facebook. I happened to walk past Pigs In Heaven the other day while at the library and checked it out. I got home and began reading — and I have not been able to stop.
There have been times in my life when I’ve read The Bean Trees and then Pigs in Heaven and started all over again with The Bean Trees immediately after. The characters in these books feel so intensely human, and they are so intensely beautiful.
I would read a cleaning product label that Ms Kingslover wrote. I can not look at the night sky without trying to find the ‘seven sisters’ pigs in heaven. another of her great reads
One of my favorite books. Loved it and The Bean Trees.
Barbara Kingsolver is such a great, vivid writer that every word on the page seems a part of a clear pattern that she is weaving to tell a story and a truth. So much insight!
This is the first Barbara Kingsolver novel I ever read and it put me on a course of reading every one of her other books as they came along. I enjoy this writer’s work immensely.
This book is the follow-up to THE BEAN TREES, and continues the story of Turtle. Without being preachy Kingsolver evokes sympathy and understanding for/of issues we should all be aware of. There is no such thing as a Kingsolver book that is not worth reading multiple times (and introducing to students in the classroom if you are a high school or …
I love all of Ms. Kingsolver’s books.
all time favorite
This is the story, along with The Bean Tree, that turned me into a devout Kingsolver reader.
If you liked The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver you’ll also love this one.
ms Kingsolver has another wonderful story to tell. Under the surface I learned about an American Native culture, their tribal laws and custody issues. Very well written and insightful. Follows Bean Trees
Compelling, Frank, lovely characters
I loved everything about this book. It is a sequel to The Bean Trees and can’t tell you anything about it if you haven’t read The Bean Trees as it will spoil it completely. Read the Bean Trees, and when you have digested that, turn to Pigs In Heaven – you won’t be disappointed. It is sooo good, with same wonderful characters, but an entirely …
From back when Barbara Kingsolver was good, next read Bean Trees.
