Since the time I wanted to read this book, it is done.
We find Laura the mother of Andrea Oliver, she is the perfect mother and lives a quiet life in Belle Isle by the sea. She works as a speech therapist, she would never hide anything from anyone, that’s what her daughter thinks.
Except that Andrea is violently assaulted in a shopping mall, her mother reacts in a strange way that surprises her daughter. She was totally different thirty years before she came to Belle Isle. As for Laura, she is a heroine after all these events except that one day later she is shot by someone who wanted to find her at all costs.
What is Laura hiding? Andrea will have to find out more about her mother’s former identity no matter what she learns, good or bad.
A book read almost in one sitting, so much so that I was immediately hooked on the story, so gripping, captivating, addictive, full of intrigue, suspense and twists and turns with very endearing characters. I love the author’s writing.
The book started out with a “what just happened” moment and kept me turning the pages to find out the answer. Great!
I really like Karin Slaughter books but this one I couldn’t finish. Started out really good but then introduced other people and couldn’t figure out how they would all come together.
My first Karin Slaughter and I am a huge fan. This book gripped me from the start and I read it straight through until the end. My first but it won’t be my last.
Very exciting and filled with action. Hard to put down. Wasn’t sure how it was going to end.
Probably one of my favorite books in the last few years. Karin Slaughter is magic. The book is a total page-turner and a mystery, delving deep into the secrets that families keep.
Seriously, anything Karin Slaughter writes is a must read as far as I’m concerned. Pieces of Her doesn’t disappoint!
I’ve actually read this twice and enjoyed both times. What do any of us really know about our parents’ lives before we were born? In this suspenseful novel, a 31 year old daughter rapidly comes to realize her mother not only had a life before she was born, but also had a very “on the edge” life.
As she tries to unravel the knotty past, the daughter encounters people of dubious character and dark intentions.
If you like suspenseful reads, you may be sitting up until the wee hours of the morning just like me!!
I love Karin Slaughter novels. This one is a great thriller that keeps you guessing. Great story with intriguing characters.
Mystery that kept you guessing.
Great book, I couldn’t put it down and I don’t usually read crime type books, I’m hooked on this author now!!!
Love most of Karin Slaughter’s books. However, this one wasn’t up to her standards. Plot was jerked around jumping from one time line to another and characters not believable.
Two related stories on two timelines. Both are riveting.
I was up all night reading this book. I couldn’t put it down.
Pretty good. Would’ve benefited from the protagonist having a personality or a goal instead of driving from one scene of exposition to the next. Her actions never make sense and she has no personality trait except being perpetually in decisive and tongue-tied. Laura/Jane’s story was very compelling.
I’ve read Karin Slaughter for years. I really enjoyed all of the ones that had Sara Linton, coroner in Grant County, GA and the Will Trent series with the GBI and many of her stand alones. However, this book, “Pieces of Her” just seemed too confusing, too long, and too repetitive in the details. The story line got repeated every time it switched from ‘then’ to ‘now’ and bogged it down for me. I. however, figured out who was who by the end of the book and that part was still a good mystery.
Also, Andrea (Andy) a 31 year old who acted like she was a teenager, who didn’t know how to survive on her own. She had been living in NY for years and returned home to become a loser, a shy unambitious ‘girl’ who thought her mother was pushy. Then a mall shooting turns things upside….Andrea still acted like someone who just wasn’t believable at times. Did I finish the book? Yes. Would I read it again? No.
Of course, this is my opinion and if you are a die hard Slaughter fan, then take the chance and pick this book up. I haven’t written her off my TBR list. The next one just might the be best yet. Thank you, Ms. Slaughter for entertaining us.
Pieces Of Her is about Andrea discovering the pieces of her mother she never knew. After Laura and Andrea are caught in a shoot out in the mall Andrea witnesses a side to her mother she had never known. This one event triggered the beginning of Andrea’s search for the truth.
The set of events that take place sends the reader on a very unexpected journey into the lives of Laura and Andrea Oliver who are mother and daughter. Andrea’s entire life is about to change and what she thought she knew of her life is about to blow her mind.
It took one spark to ignite the plan that consumed each of their lives. A past dating back to 1986 is where Andrea had to gather all the pieces of her mother’s life. As an amateur detective Andrea impressed me. As a thirty-one year living back at home floundering in life for a sense of purpose Andrea found her courage and strength on that journey to self discovery.
Laura didn’t allow what happened to her turn her into a victim. Laura is a survivor. Laura’s character was extremely complicated and complex. Her journey shocked me in the most wonderful way.
Pieces Of Her is a thrill novel about Laura and Andrea. The characters actions and behavior kept me alert. The dangerous activity fed my curiosity. Ms. Slaughter included some gory graphic murder scenes, but it was relevant to the cause. She offers a complicated storyline with complicated characters, yet it’s an easy read. The storyline while not an original concept is still unique with the way Ms. Slaughter delivered the information. She made it her own with unexpected twists and turns. The information presented allows the reader to formulate their own ideas and draw their own conclusions. Nothing is as it seems.
This is a powerful and intense story. I got sucked into these characters lives absorbing both the truth and lies.
This was one of those story’s you wanted to complete in one sitting, for if you took a break, you would lose your train of thought.
Narrator:
Performed by Kathleen Early. She was the solo narrator performing this unabridged audiobook. The audiobook was performed in a soundproof facility offering a good quality listening experience. Kathleen voiced everyone of these characters with great skill and talent.
This is one of those books you think you have figured out time and again, and then it twists and turns. It’s a book you want to start on vacation, or a weekend so you can read it straight through.
Great read! Fun, unpredictable ride!
Great suspense. An exploration of a mother/daughter relationship. Everything Andrea knows about her mother is suddenly brought into question by random acts of violence. When Laura instructs Andrea to run and provides her with a piece of her old self, Andrea sets out on a journey of discovery. Discovering more pieces of who Laura really is turns out to be a near fatal mistake.
