Perilous Trust is a heart-pounding, fast-paced romantic suspense that will have you questioning every character’s motives until the very end. I picked up the sample of this book while in the waiting room of the doctor’s office. By the time I left the doctor, not only had I downloaded the entire book, I was hooked into the story enough to spend the rest of the day finding out what happened.
Great start to a new series, and yes, I’ll be reading the rest of the series! Love Barbara Freethy! Can’t wait to download the next in the series: Reckless Whisper.
~ Heather Sunseri, Author of Exposed in Darkness
Action and romance in a seamless plot. I’m off to read the next book in the series.
I first found out about this series when I read the Lightning Strikes series by Barbara Freethy. I loaded the series on my Nook as a TBR. But when Barnes & Noble put this one on the serial read for December, I just had to read it. Wow! This is a fantastic read that is so well written. Full of mystery, suspense, a plot loaded with twists and a wonderful romance. I was so caught up in it, that I couldn’t wait to finish it. I finished it up by reading the one on my reader. Planning on finishing the rest of the series now. Well done Barabara!
PERILOUS TRUST (Off the Grid: FBI Trilogy #1) by Barbara Freethy is an exciting start to a new romantic suspense series. This is a fast paced story loaded with action, suspense and romance. Each book features one of five friends who formed a secret group while in Quantico with the promise to always help the others.
Sophie Parker is an archeology instructor at NYU, who receives the devastating news that her father was killed in a car crash. Her father was the head of the Organized Crime Unit in the NY FBI field office. When she gets a chance to check her phone, she listens to her father’s last frantic and cryptic messages with instructions she must follow and to not trust anyone including his fellow FBI agents.
FBI agent Damon Wolfe cannot believe what he is hearing. His mentor and reason for being in the NY FBI office is dead and his daughter is missing. Four years ago, Damon and Sophie came together for one night of solace and life-affirming passion over the death of a mutual friend. They never contacted each other again, but now Damon knows he has to find Sophie and help her.
Sophie does not know if she can trust Damon, but as the bullets start flying, they flee together to follow Sophie’s father’s clues and hopefully solve his murder and eliminate the threat to Sophie’s life.
The plot is an intricate puzzle and has a lot of players that need to be kept straight. Besides Damon and Sophie, you are introduced to Bree and Wyatt, who are members of the five from Quantico. Sophie’s father had a lifetime group of friends from Yale that may be involved in his death and his job as head of the Organized Crime Unit also brought in several players. Keeping everyone straight was my only problem while reading this book. Other than that, it was a surprise for me when all the pieces where discovered.
Damon and Sophie’s chemistry was intense and pretty much instantaneous from their one-night-stand four years ago. While on the run, they get to know more about each other’s pasts and families. It brings them closer and their relationship builds from there. The sex is hot, but not explicit and well balanced with the feelings of loss and fear during other parts of the story.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series and getting to know more about the other friends from Quantico.
I enjoyed the romantic suspense story that involved Sophie, an archaeologist, and Damon, an FBI agent. Both characters go into hiding after discovering corruption within the FBI agency connected to organised crime members. Sophie receives a voicemail message and cryptic clues from her father, who was killed due to corruption, and this puts her in escalating danger with Damon. I especially enjoyed the suspense and mystery surrounding the characters and trying to work out who to trust and who not to trust. A great cat and mouse suspense story which keeps you turning the pages.
Just starting her FBI series. Loved the first book.
First time reading this author and I could not put this book down. So good. Fast paced no slow spots, writing is so good you will not feel lost at all! Luckily for me and anyone who reads it, It is the first in a series! Yeah!
Alan Parker is an FBI agent with the organized crime unit who was killed in a car accident. Before his death he sends his daughter, Sophie, a Professor of Archaeology at a university, messages to leave town and trust no one. She is confused and doesn’t now what to do. Along comes Damon Wolfe an FBI agent has been sent to find Sophie and try to convince her to trust him for her protection. Sophie and Damon become romantically involved. This book has lots of twists and turns and was a really fun read. I received this free e-book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoyed the intrigue and fast pace of this novel – a real page turner! The chemistry between Sophie and Damon made their adventure that much more exciting. Can’t wait to read book two!
I absolutely loved Perilous Trust by Barbara Freethy, the first book in her Off the Grid series. I really love romantic thrillers and Barbara Freethy truly delivered an incredible story in Perilous Trust. I have read some of Barbara Freethy’s other books, both her romances and other romantic thrillers and have thoroughly enjoyed them. The cover of Perilous Trust intrigued me as well as the book write up. I could not put it down. I loved the characters and the way she describes the locations in and around New York City. I really enjoyed how the book was told from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. Barbara Freethy has shown that she is a master storyteller regardless of the genre. Perilous Trust is the story of Sophie Parker, and archaeologist and professor at NYU and Damon Wolfe, an FBI agent recently assigned to the NY Field Office. Sophie and Damon had met four years prior to the events in Perilous Trust at the wake for a mutual friend, and end up having a one-night stand with Damon leaving before Sophie woke up. Damon moves to NY at the request of Sophie’s father, Alan who is the Special Agent in Charge of the Organized Crime Division. Before Damon can get the details about his new assignment, Alan is involved in a fatal car accident. As Sophie approaches her apartment following the devastating news of her father’s death, she notices two men outside and decides not to approach her apartment. She listens to the four voicemails from her father that he recorded moments before his death. Alan tells Sophie to trust no one and gives her clues to something he wants her to retrieve and have a good life. Damon learning that Sophie is missing and her apartment has been ransacked, decides to see if Sophie is in the place where they first met. Shortly after arriving to the cabin the windows are shot out and Sophie and Damon go on the run searching for clues behind Alan’s death. It was an incredible story, it had me wondering who should they trust. Damon seeks the assistance of two of his Quantico classmates, Bree Adams and Wyatt Tanner who were also trained by Alan Parker. Wyatt thinks that Alan set him up to be murdered. I love how the story unfolded and all the details about the other life that Alan led. I really enjoy the plot twists and the surprises in Perilous Trust. One of my favorite parts of the story are the poignant moments that Sophie and Damon share. I loved that Sophie was able to break through the metal cage around Damon’s heart because of his past and that she learned that she could trust Damon not to leave her. I loved how the facts behind Alan’s life and death were resolved and that Sophie was able to get closure. Never would have guessed who was behind all the actions in the story, that was truly a surprise plot twist. I love how all the lose ends got tied up. It was an incredible story and I loved every page. So looking forward to reading Bree Adams story in Reckless Whisper.
The books in this series were excellent.
Fast paced and twists that were unexpected.

Very well written
What is a girl to do when she gets voicemail calls from her FBI agent dad telling her to trust no one right before he is killed. The messages left by her father lead her on a journey to try to understand what happened to him.
A great read, lots of well formed characters. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
A good read with many plot turns even if some seem unrealistic.
