Agatha Christie, queen of crime writing, was the first crime novelist whose work of this kind I read. It remains my favourite genre. Her style of plotting is one that I like too. Peril At End House was one book in a set given to me by my mother as a Christmas present.

You’ll be relieved to hear that Poirot is still pompous and Hastings is still a buffoon. Clearly there are still a few things we can count on in the dumpster fire otherwise known as 2020.

Agatha Christie wasn’t the greatest writer or elucidator of character in the world. Her fiction is full of cardboard figures, including her detectives, which tend to be a compendium of quirks and tag lines rather than real characters. However, she constructs ingenious mysteries and gets you to turn pages, wondering what’s going to come next. …
