“A sizzling Southern tale of murder.” ~ Altered Instincts
Summer in South Carolina – a time of ripe peaches, crackling bonfires, trips to the lake, and the rural legend of a creature known as the Lizard Man.
This year, a very real monster is lurking about.
The victims all have one thing in common – they share their names with plants.
Soon it becomes apparent that seventeen-year-olds Dusty Miller and Nandina Bush may be next on the killer’s list.
From Bookbub: “In South Carolina, children swap stories of a monstrous urban legend to liven up a sleepy summer – not realizing a very real predator lurks nearby. When 17-year-old Dusty Miller is marked as a target, he’ll need to untangle kids’ tales from true dangers in the rich Southern mystery.”more
A bit hard to follow. Not one of my favorites. Definitely didn’t see the end coming…so that was something.
Good read, a real page turner.
I liked the book in general, although I think it lacked editing for clumsy syntax, errors in grammar and other small concerns. I believe the general style was suitable to the subject matter although simple minded at times. I think the author was striving for an appropriate simplistic style, and it fell a little short.
This one should be a movie. Contemporary and one you cannot put down.
I HATE THIS BOOK! PERIOD!
Weird
Too many flashbacks and a lot of unrelated information
This is recommended as a mystery but I found that it is more a book on growing up in a small Southern town. The almost adult Dusty Miller chats about his life and family and the ghost stories of his town. He falls for the new girl Nadina Bush his last year of high school and begins working on her father’s garden center learning anout flowers and shrubs. It is a young adult love story and coming of age book where the two people happen to have the names of plants.
The mystery surrounds the deaths of people that also are named after plants. And when it hits their small town, you see the fear.
This is a slow enjoyable read BUT no real suspense, clues, or horror is projected. It’s good for a day sitting in the sun thinking about high school and old friends and simpler times. And like all small towns, you have the popular, the forgotten and the old scary tales….just not that scary..really. if you want fear or tension, skip this. If you need a break from tension, chills and disturbing murders, then read this.
