Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school… again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy and … and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves. With cover art from the major motion picture, this first installment of Rick Riordan’s best-selling series is a non-stop thrill-ride and a classic of mythic proportions.

Great Young Adult book and series! The ties to Greek mythology has opened up an entire new world for tweens and a new found interest in mythology. (MS ELA teacher)
I have read the entire series. They were all great!
An instant classic!
If you haven’t read this book yet, please read this! It’s incredible and starts the world of Percy Jackson! Such a great book and wonderful for younger kids. I gave my nephew an extra copy that I had and he was hooked on the series! Nothing but love for these books
I originally read this because my 6th grade daughter had to read it for school. It hooked me though! I have finished the first Percy Jackson series and loved it. Percy is hilarious! I highly recommend this series of books to anyone who wants a fun and exciting read. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
I bought this years ago before the movie came out as something to read with my little brother. As a huge fan of Greek mythology I liked the modern adaptation of it and it really got my brother into reading and was something we could read and talk about together.
Can’t wait to read the others. they’re in my library though.
This is the fastest I’ve read a book in a while! I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to pick this up, but I’m glad I finally read it. It was such a fun read.
Did I believe that Percy was 12 years old? No. He read older than that to me, but then again, I don’t really know what kids are like. It’s been a while since I was 12, and I don’t have children myself. It’s possible he behaves like a regular 12-year-old, but personally I didn’t quite believe it.
I also found the number of punctuation errors (mostly missing speech markers and apostrophes, but there were others) a little distracting and surprising for a book this famous, but that’s just me being nitpick-y.
It probably goes without saying, but if you have a weakness for Greek mythology like I do, you’ll eat this up. It’s full of references, and I love the modern take on it, like Olympus moving with the heart of civilization. If you’re not into Greek mythology, I think you’ll still find this a fun read anyway. There’s a lot of humour in this, and it made me smile and chuckle to myself quite often. It’s very worth reading if you’re late to the party like I am, and I’m looking forward to his many other books.
I don’t like reading, but I like this also great for a school project
Excellent worldbuilding, loads of action and adventure, lots of great twists and turns.
Love the mix of myth and the modern world.
Percy is a likeable character with dyslexia, ADHD and a knack for getting into trouble.
The use of prophecy to guide the story is loads of fun. And Cerberus – the three-headed dog – is a Rottweiler! (Can I take him home?)
A must-read for fantasy and mythology fans.
Its awesome!!!!!!!
Greek mythology has fascinated me since I was a young child whose books still contained pictures and while my interest had faded a little this book brought it all back. I first read this book well over a decade ago and even as an adult I have the urge to re-read this whole series. There are tense scenes but the humor that’s sprinkled in always lightens the mood. Submerge yourself in this book and you won’t regret it. Welcome to the life of a demigod.
It’s amazing
It had a lot of Greek mythology in it. But it was not just a history book. Rick Riordan took a normal boy (Percy Jackson) and gave him extraordinary gifts, if you loved Harry Potter you will most likely like this book or if you really liked this book you will probably like Harry Potter.
An amazing book made by an amazing author
Yes this is categorised as a teen- young adult book, years ago recommended to me by my oldest son. We all at some point have read about Heracles ,Artemis,Perseus or Andromeda to name a few Of the gods from Greek Mythology This is a FUN action packed surprise of adventure and selfdiscovey that makes it hard to not laugh and sympathize with the young character’s struggles , and the Greek Olympians ……behavior.
If you watched the movie without reading the book first ,shame on you! I respect your choice outwardly, but deep inside I have to say that you should always read be for you view. ,My opinion anyhoo.give it a try.
