HARRY DRESDEN IS BACK AND READY FOR ACTION, in the new entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files. When the Supernatural nations of the world meet up to negotiate an end to ongoing hostilities, Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard, joins the White Council’s security team to make sure the talks stay civil. But can he succeed, when dark political manipulations threaten … political manipulations threaten the very existence of Chicago—and all he holds dear?

I’ve been waiting years for Peace Talks. This wasn’t the book I was hoping for. It’s better.
Buckle up. It’s going to be one, hard, ride. Jim Butcher has long proven he can juggle multiple threads of political intrigue, personal drama, and threat with a masterful use of action and tension… you’re not going to want to put Peace Talks down.
It was so very good to be back in Harry’s world….almost 6 whole years have gone by since the last book. So much has changed in our world. However, it didn’t take very long to dive back into Harry’s Chicago. Harry now has a responsibility he never had before, and he’s struggling to make sure she is safe and taken care of. But, as you know, poor Harry can’t seem to stay out of trouble. Things take a wrong turn when one of his allies does something terrible to another of his allies, and Harry is thrown in the middle of machinations upon lies upon enigmas. This latest was a build up to the next book; it had very little action which is quite different than usual. Harry also seems a little more mature than previous books. I’m anxiously looking forward to Battle Ground so I can see what happens after the huge cliffhanger in this one, and, dare I say it, a little action. Recommend! I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I didn’t have to wait as long as others since I didn’t start reading the series until 2018 – however, I’m so glad to see this and the next book, Battleground available. In fact, Battleground is on my TBR pile right now. So nice to check in with Harry and his friends. Of course, we still have no idea what’s going on with Thomas. Fun update into the Dresden world.
Once again, fair warning this review will have spoilers about previous books. So, if you are not caught up on the books you should probably come back when you have.
I listened to the audio again as I have since book one and I cannot give them enough credit. James Masters does such an epic job with them.
So, the book starts out semi relaxing and it seems like Harry is finally figuring shit out and getting life balanced and I loved his homelife or a much as we can say that, with Maggie. I love the little we get about Maggie, the baby spirit thingy and him.
The same goes for him and Karen, I loved what they have and how they manage it somehow. I like that it is so real and raw.
Of course, not far into the book, shit starting to hit the fan … BIG TIME. Someone close to Harry screws up… bad … really bad.
The stakes get higher and higher with every book, but this one really tops it all. Not only is Harry and the Supernatural world in trouble, but it might get dragged into Human world as well.
Big things and very surprising and shocking things are happening to Thomas, while we are not seeing much of him, he is very much very present in the book in a way. Of course, wherever he is, Justine is.
Lara as well is a lot in this book, I think I like her but I never really trust her.
Of course, we also have Butters and every time I think he can’t surprise me anymore he does just that. I just love how much he has grown and honestly, I wouldn’t mind a book about him, he has become such a strong character.
There are some things going down with Harry and Ebenezar McCoy, that most likely will have a long-lasting effect on Harry and the rest of the books.
Hmmm I think everyone we ever met and that is still alive was in this book in some way, there is so much going on that it is crazy and will make your head spin. Lots of action and plot twists and the ending … OMG.
We know something big will be coming by the end and I’m worried, I think we will lose some people, some important people.
I can’t believe that after the next book I will be caught up, and will have to wait with the rest of the world for the next book. I’m also excited to be caught up and don’t need to worry about spoilers anymore. This series truly has become one of my favorite series of all time.
This book? How would I rate it … action packed, shocking, tender and still funny at times. I rate it 5 even though there is so much going on that it was hard to keep track at times.
What I love about these books is that they always start where the last one ended and the action is non-stop from the very beginning. The Winter mantel has not changed Harry’s sarcastic manner or his loyalty to his friends. Thomas gets himself into a whole lot of trouble in the book and Harry does everything he can to help him out, even team up with Lara. Although Karrin Murphy is still healing from her injuries from her last outing with Harry, she joins him to help Thomas. They make a really good team.
Molly and Harry’s daughter are back in this book, as well as Michael and Butters. Harry’s group of friends is great and never let him down.
I would love to know where the author gets his ideas for the demons/monsters in his books. They are all very unique and terrifying. The big threat is straight out of mythology and probably the biggest thing Harry has had to deal with. The ending leaves the reader craving more, so I’m glad the next book is coming out soon.
When you read this be prepared to hyperventilate, cry and scream, it’s all there and it’s all coming at Harry. Harry is a trouble magnet, no trouble passes him in peace. Peace Talks, LOL yeah right. Every page had me going squee. Harry never got to chill and relax. Well he did find time to workout, he’s all Mr Fit now Harry has a hot body ?! I know right ? Omgawd the heartbreak, Mr. Butcher is a beast ! I nearly had a heart attack a couple times it was so intense. I had to stop, breath and ohmmm myself down several times. The ending is……..
Go read it, read the series, you are welcome
Okay. I love Harry. But you know from the start Peace Talks isn’t a good idea. Who in their right mind would trust Marcone with anything, especially anything this big? Recipe for disaster.
Most troubling is the situation with Thomas. Since he has been beaten senseless, you never find out the reason for his actions. Is this just a distraction?
Harry has been gone for six years, great to have him back. But, there are some heavy hitters coming after him. Murph is still recovering from her injuries, Thomas is out of the picture, Molly has another job, Michael is retired and caring for Maggy, and Ebeneezer hates vampires. Who is Harry going to get to help him?
The next book in the series will be out this September. This one sort of ended in a cliffhanger, but Butcher does that. And, he’s really good at it.
Jim Butcher has done it again. Another wonderful book in the world of the Wizard Harry Dresden! I love Harry Dresden. The world building is EXCELLENT! I love the characters. The plot has a lot of twists and turns you never see coming. This book is easy to read. I really enjoyed the story and couldn’t put it down. It is unpredictable. Harry must enlist his friends again and save his brother Thomas. I highly recommend this book.
Dresden Files so always nice .
shame the book ends at what feels like the half way point. I guess battleground is more or less peace talks part 2
What’s not to like? Butcher is one of the good ones.
Another fantastic entry in the Harry Dresden series. This one ends on a cliffhanger, but it was so good I didn’t even care. I just bought the next one.
I had been waiting for this book for what had seemed like forever. I am very glad that it was worth the wait and pulled me back into a world that I had missed and wanted to visit again. The characters have moved on and while different are in some ways are still very much who they have always been. The story itself gives us a chance to get to see all the players who will be involved in the next phase of the storytelling.
When the Fomor request a conclave to end the hostilities Harry is asked to join the White Council’s security team. He will also be attending in his capacity as the Winter Knight since the accords were established by Mab. The delegates will all be covered by their own security in order to keep the talks civil at all costs. The fact that the Fomor are even involved would mean that if you can grow eyes in the back of your head, you should do so. The talks are being hosted by Gentleman John Marcone who has had a lot of help and support from the supernatural community, though many wonder how a human can have come to the position he holds.
Harry’s life has never been exactly easy but because of all the roles he has taken on in the last few years things have become even more complicated. His roles as a father, brother, boyfriend, Warden, and grandson can make life worth living but can also cause things to be less than optimal when trying to protect everyone. Can Harry succeed when dark political manipulation threaten the very existence of Chicago and everything he holds dear.
This is a clear prelude to the next book in the series and sets the stage for what will be happening as they go to war. I am so ready for the next step and so happy that I got to be with my old friends before things truly fall into the craziness that can only surround Harry when the bad guys come to town. Dresden fans will love it!
Typical Harry Dresdan, which is good.
i love harry dresden! all of them. the characters are interesting and the story is actually a story.
This is not the Same Jim Butcher from 6+ years ago. Total cash grab by the publisher. Should have been combined with Battle Ground
Harry Dresden fans are rejoicing in the return of their favorite wizard, the one who cracks wise while saving multiple worlds of fantastic creatures and a human or two. But the fans should know, this is a cliffhanger and there’s a lot hanging off the edge of that cliff.
Until we get to that point we see Harry dealing with is life as the Winter Knight, which brings all kinds of benefits such as enhanced strength and endurance, but the wear and tear on his human body is mounting. In addition, he has dependents now and they are truly hostages to fortune as he makes his choices.
We’ll see many of our favorite characters return, and one of the things I love about these books is how the secondary characters grow and develop. Waldo Butters from the early books is not the same Waldo we get now, and that keeps it interesting.
The concepts of home also come into play. Harry has to deal with the loss of home, and risk to his greater home of Chicago. We can expect surprises in the next book, some resolution of conflict, but Butcher doesn’t pull punches so there may be loss of life as well. Stay tuned.
MUCH darker than his other 17 books I have read
This book was a loooong time coming, but so worth the wait.
Peace Talks brings all the big players to one place for a big meeting, so of course, this will never go smoothly. When Ethniu, and ancient, immortal being, turns up, set on destroying the city and everyone in it, it’s up to Harry and all the other supernatural groups, to band together to stop her. This is spread across the two books (16&17), with Peace Talks more about setting the scene, and Battle Ground more about the actual fight.
I really enjoyed this one. I had missed Harry and Co., and this book was a great read. I loved that almost everyone we’ve ever met in the books was there, and that amongst all the seriousness, there’s always some humour from Harry.
What can I say? It’s Harry…the best damn detective in Chicago….I love the continuity of the charaters and the development of their lives that Butcher follows in this series. Each one of these books has been a fun fantasy read.
