Cancer. It is a word no one wants to hear when sitting in a doctor’s office or from a loved one during a phone conversation. It is a word so prevalent in our society today. I don’t think there is anyone who has not been personally touched by this word, this disease, this diagnosis. This book is not a “how-to” guide regarding cancer. You won’t find resources for the best doctors, the latest … resources for the best doctors, the latest research, diet/nutrition, or even statistics about outcomes regarding the specific type of cancer that has entered your world.
Instead, this book offers the comfort of 11 different men and women who have been personally touched by this diagnosis and have found peace despite the pain.
This book is not written solely from the standpoint of people who have experienced cancer personally – there are many chapters written by wives, daughters-in-law, and children, sharing how their loved ones fought valiantly and how close and personal God was during the journey.
Join me between these pages as you read firsthand, from the individuals or their loved ones, how God showed up in every situation. He took what the enemy meant for evil (pain) and replaced it with His perfect peace.

Peace During the Pain is a collection of poignant life stories of individuals and their family’s journey through a diagnosis of cancer. In each of the vignettes, readers are exposed to some or all of the emotions assigned to grief–denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Yet within the chaos of their lives, as the ravages of surgery, chemo, and radiation therapies are faced, each writer portrayed a sense of hope and a deepening of their faith in God. The experiences were unique to each person, some were newly diagnosed, some had been diagnosed years before and been cancer free for years and again faced a new diagnosis, some had families who lived close, others with family hundreds of miles away, some were healed here on earth and some were healed as they left earth and entered into eternity with Christ. The peace and hope that are articulated bring inspiration and encouragement. This collection of true life experiences is an excellent source of comfort and help for those who are on the imposing and difficult journey of cancer, whether as the one diagnosed or the family members of that one.
I read a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
Peace During the Pain shows us our Lord in a new and precious way in this collection of writings for those who are diagnosed with cancer, their family members, and caregivers. Shared within the pages are unique perspectives written by the person diagnosed with cancer or their family member. Each has prayed, worshipped God, struggled, suffered, endured, and ultimately received a blessing unlike any other.
The stories shared don’t give opinions on treatments or where to seek help, or even a sermon on “why”. Instead, each shares the experience of its respective writer, no two of which are alike. Some share the Bible verses or promises they clung to and some of the things the Lord has shown them through their journey. Some receive miraculous healing, others did not.
Whatever the individual situation is, the Lord’s presence becomes very real to each. Also real is how the Lord works through the people in each person’s life. Included is a poem written by one of the people with cancer that simply points to Jesus. Faith the size of a mustard seed is all that is required; while each person has a different measure of faith, the Holy Spirit grows each one.
Cheri Swalwell has put together a beautiful, at times painful, collection that encourages each person effected by cancer in their spiritual growth. Yes, the reader finds sadness, grief, and loss within the pages, but will also find the peace of the Lord, His love, and blessings through one of the more difficult life situations. This reader appreciates each story, and highly recommends it for the one diagnosed with cancer or caring for the person with cancer. Peace – God’s blessed peace – in the midst of the pain of cancer and loss is a miracle!
From a grateful heart: I received a copy of this from the author; a review was not required.
Peace During the Pain is a very good book that will help anyone that is going through something. It could be used as a small group study or for someone to read alone. I highly recommend this book and rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

Was very interested in reading this book because my daughter has been diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease and a 50/50 chance of a cure.
The hardest part is our physical locations as we are on opposite sides of the US. Don’t get updates but doing this at her pace, which is fine with us.
What I love about this book is that it handles each diagnosis differently but there are many similarities-cancer is cancer and God is there along side us prior to the diagnosis and during and after.
Love the scriptures and how each has selected some that have helped them get through the hard parts.
Stories brought tears to my eyes: some died, some survived but it was the journey and fight each took up that made me know we can fight what my daughter has also.
Note from the author, acknowledgements and contributors pages are included at the very end so you know what others have done after writing their journey.
This book gives us more than hope and so glad we were able to read it at this time in our lives. Still doing biopsies but the main threat has been diminished. Enlist the help of friends prayers as it will help.
I received this review book from the author and this is my honest opinion.
