The career of playwright Joy Sinclair comes to an abrupt end on an isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands when someone drives and eighteen-inch dirk through her neck. Called upon to investigate the case in a country where they have virtually no authority, aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, grapple for both a motive and a … murderer. Emotions run deep in this highly charged drama, for the list of suspects soon includes Britain’s foremost actress, its most successful theatrical producer, and the woman Lynley loves. He and Havers must tread carefully through the complicated terrain of human relationships, while they work to solve a case rooted in the darkest corners of the past and the unexplored regions of the human heart.

Great story, well written.
The early Lynley-Havers mysteries are the best and this is one of them. Recommend highly.
I read all of Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley books in publication order, which is my recommendation. I loved them all, except What Came Before He Shot Her. That is one of the saddest stories that I’ve ever read. Unless you want your heart broken, I recommend that you skip that one. It doesn’t add to the ongoing story.
Love her books, read in order.
This is not the best of Elizabeth George, but is well-crafted and unpredictable. The ending is satisfying.
Good read. Reminiscent of Agatha Christie.
Well written
Another beautiful book by Elizabeth George. Read it!
Really enjoy this series
Well written; interesting plot; well-developed characters. Looking forward to reading the entire series.
A little hard to get started but then I loved it. Have read a lot of the newer books but not the early ones.
I love every book in the series.
I’ve read them all, only wishing there were more still to read — but I’ve caught up with the author on her serial of books featuring Inspector Thomas Lynley and DCI Barbara Havers. Stubborn, selfish, sometimes lazy even, the always incorruptible Barbara Havers is my favorite second-hand banana. I can’t get enough of Elizabeth George’s books. Her prose is spectacular and her characters all too real.
Not as good as some of the other books in the series…
This is her best book ever in this series. Great characters and an unusual plot.
Well written
Elizabeth George is one of my favorite writers. Best when read in order as characters and situations develop
Master writer
This entertaining story with well loved characters and a great amount of historical detail keeps you reading quickly until the end. It leaves you looking forward to the NEXT story in the line.
I am an Elizabeth George fan and the audible really brought this old book to life. Reader was good. Story great. I’m going to add another one to listen to soon.
