This is it. This is the work of historical fiction that changed my life. I would not be an author of historical fiction without this novel.
This is the novel that taught me the power an author has to thrill, educate, surprise, delight, and utterly destroy a reader. Lymond’s hunt for the villainous Gabriel is thrilling, ingenious, and ultimately …
Pawn in Frankincense is the fourth book in the six-volume Lymond Chronicles saga by Dorothy Dunnett. I have read these books at least 5 times–yes, all of them, in order. They are the greatest adventure stories I’ve ever come across, and they informed me of a much wider world than the one I inhabit daily. The setting is mid-16th century Europe …
I’ve also enjoyed several other books in this series
Part of the best historical fiction series ever written.
This is a wonderful series. I read all of the books years ago and am delighted to get them at a reduced price for my Kindle. The lead character, Lymond Crawford is as dashing and daring as they come! However these are not books you can just fly through. The author really makes you stretch your mind a bit but it is worth it
I’ve been a reader forever. Wanted to enjoy this historical fiction – the language is very dated and frilly. Probably was nice at printing time.
This entire series is fabulous!
Fun for history-minded people who like excellent writing and compelling characters.
Greatest author in my lifetime. I have read all the Lymond Series At least 15times. Always find something new! Needs more stars.

It is not an easy or quick read: its plot and characters are complex, its vocabulary erudite, and its historical research profound. It is …
The excellent Lymond Chronicles continues. One of the things I love about Dorothy Dunnett, apart from her superlative writing and research, is that the quality and pace of the series never lapses. Absolutely wonderful!
