Path Of The Dark (The Light and Darkness Series Book 3) by Jayne Castel.
An entertaining mix of loyalty, adventure, danger and a once in a lifetime passion!
Prince Elias was sent by his father King of Anthor to the Royal City of Rithmar on a fake mission of peace talks with King Nathan. His real mission is to finish what he failed to do a year earlier, kill Princess Ninia, the only enchanter who can wield both the dark and the light. Elias had never failed a mission before, so, he can’t let his strong attraction to the unfriendly and sassy enchanter Ryana, get in his way.
Ryana is an enchanter of darkness who was made to flee the order and her home for many years because she fell in love with the a man who used her to steal a dangerous magical stone. Now, finally back home after recovering the stone, she can’t afford her attraction to another bad boy no matter how attractively coarse and handsome the Prince is. She senses he’s up to no good.
I thoroughly enjoyed this creative storyline with its fast pace twisting plots, complex & spirited characters, mystical world building, witty banter, and the raw steamy passionate romance that left a sunburn. I recommend this book to everyone who loves an exciting, well written fantasy, with adventure, and a steamy (4 Flame) romance.
Content Note: Adult Content includes explicitly noted open bedroom door romance acts.

Fun fantasy read with romance, action, intrigue and excellent descriptive journey. Found myself pulling for success for several of the characters because they were so well developed. A HEA and no cliffhanger!
Possible spoilers!!
This is book three in a series. I have not read the first two books, but this one is a winner. The forces of light and dark are united in one young woman. Sent to kill her and clear the path to dominance for the king of Anthor, Elias knows what he must do. Slay Ninian. He has already failed once. He cannot fail again. But he doesn’t realize that he will face a challenge that will change the course of his quest. Ryana, enchantress of the Dark senses that Elias is not who he pretends to be, but all she can trust are her instincts. Drawn to him despite her misgivings, she struggles to make sense of her feelings for the virile prince.
A riveting fantasy!

It was a slow start to the story and the pace did not pick up until the last third of the book, this is why I took off a star, because pacing is important to advance a story. The tale of Elias and Rayna is not a standalone book, it is the third book and that is why there are quite a bit of dialogue and situations I was puzzled about. The writing is fine, I liked Elias more than Rayna. Rayna seemed more a teenage girl than a grown woman based on her thoughts and reactions. The adventure and battles needed more than just magical battle descriptions, which lack dynamic and strategy which is why I took of half a star. The romance was more sweet than steamy and was the well written parts of the story. I would still read the author again if it was a straight romance because that is the stronger parts of this story.

A Medieval Fantasy
Although well written, I just couldn’t step into the imaginary world of Path of the Dark. I suspect not having read the previous books may be a factor. Still, I did tried to care about the lead characters, but I just didn’t. I was total ambivalent about their struggles in this mystical medieval fantasy. I also tried to like the hero and heroine, but (for me) they were likable in one chapter and less so in the next. Their complicated world was well built and well described, but the intricately detailed political plot seemed to just drag on and on. Then came the action punctuated by intimately described passion. Thankfully, the ending was a happy one, but truthfully, I was just glad this lengthy read was over.
Due to my experience with this book, I would strongly suggest reading the prior books in the series before reading this one.
