The finale of the Paternus series, War of God’s lives up to the hype and then some. Dyrk had so many balls in the air at points I began to forget about some of them so they were exciting little “oh yeah, how’d I forget about them” moments in an already exciting read.
At this point in the series, you are expecting the characters which shocked you in the first two books, but that doesn’t stop him throwing surprises at you, and doesn’t take away but adds to it as you become invested in them and their lives.
A monster read which could be used as a doorstop for the most stubborn of doors, there is very little let up in the action as around 70% of it is all out action suiting the title.
Only disappointment, with the family involved in this he missed a perfect opportunity for lots of protective big brother jokes, “that’s my little sister, you better have her home by ten” if you have read the first two you will understand what I mean
So to conclude – this is out on the 23rd of June… What are you doing still reading this when you could be preordering already…

A thrilling conclusion to one of the most epic mythic adventure series out there!
Ashton pits the mightiest benevolent gods and monsters and legends (the Deva) against their wicked counterparts (the Asura) in a grand battle royale to decide the future of all life on Earth AND its incarnations in the multiverse. Like its prequels this book is equal parts heart-pounding, heartrending, and hilarious.
Ashton richly deserves all praise he gets for his cinematic action scenes, exhaustive cultural and mythological research underpinnings, huge stakes, and astonishing imagination. And he doesn’t skimp on the gore and horror of facing down vile monsters if you enjoy such thrills. Nor does he ever slouch on the pure wonder of encountering sublimely good entities like Yggdrasil the World Tree and many-armed giantess Kali who also has a devoted healer aspect, the Prathamaja Nandana.
And he’s masterful at doling out plentiful (well-earned) reveals and twists and betrayals and tested loyalties and second chances (a favorite theme of mine) along the whole ecstatic ride. Happily he does so without sacrificing plot or character consistency or loyalty for cleverness or shock value.
And as if that weren’t enough, he levels up and raises the bar in themes too, discussing philosophy and metaphysics and showing why living each day with hope and doing our best to make positive choices that affect ourselves and others are the only reasonable path.
But it’s seeing Ashton always blend humor and poignant relationships so extraordinarily well that drives me to collect all his stories.
And may I say Cain and Abel’s puns are especially DIVINE?
Well, I have finally come to the end of this fascinating trilogy! It took me quite a while to read, though I enjoyed it the whole time, simply because there is so much in this book. Imagine if you wanted to fold together all the myths and legends of Earth into one narrative. Impossible, right? Well, I think Ashton has managed to do it. I’m a big mythology buff, but even I had to run to Mr. Google now and then to look up some of the more obscure references. Every time, the result was “ooh, that’s cool,” not “well, that doesn’t work.” Ashton has woven threads of human stories from over thousands of years into an exciting and pulse-pounding trilogy. If you haven’t read this yet, check it out!
Hands down the best fantasy/urban fantasy book (and series) I’ve ever read. Truly the most epic of epic fantasy. I can’t wait to read it again, to relive the power, the characters, the love, the heartbreak and all the unforeseeable twists and turns. Oh the battles! And all the mind numbing amounts of mythology and lore. I was in pure glee throughout the entire series, especially this final installment.
