#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Family secrets come back to haunt Jack Reacher in this electrifying thriller from “a superb craftsman of suspense” (Entertainment Weekly). Jack Reacher hits the pavement and sticks out his thumb. He plans to follow the sun on an epic trip across America, from Maine to California. He doesn’t get far. On a country road deep in the New England woods, he sees a sign to … the New England woods, he sees a sign to a place he has never been: the town where his father was born. He thinks, What’s one extra day? He takes the detour.
At the same moment, in the same isolated area, a car breaks down. Two young Canadians had been on their way to New York City to sell a treasure. Now they’re stranded at a lonely motel in the middle of nowhere. The owners seem almost too friendly. It’s a strange place, but it’s all there is.
The next morning, in the city clerk’s office, Reacher asks about the old family home. He’s told no one named Reacher ever lived in town. He’s always known his father left and never returned, but now Reacher wonders, Was he ever there in the first place?
As Reacher explores his father’s life, and as the Canadians face lethal dangers, strands of different stories begin to merge. Then Reacher makes a shocking discovery: The present can be tough, but the past can be tense . . . and deadly.
Don’t miss a sneak peek of Lee Child’s novel Blue Moon in the back of the book.
Praise for Past Tense
“Child is one writer who should never be taken for granted.”—The New York Times Book Review
“[Lee Child] shows no signs of slowing down. . . . Reacher is a man for whom the phrase moral compass was invented: His code determines his direction. . . . You need Jack Reacher.”—The Atlantic
“Superb . . . Child neatly interweaves multiple narratives, ratchets up the suspense (the reveal of the motel plot is delicious), and delivers a powerful, satisfying denouement. Fans will enjoy learning more of this enduring character’s roots, and Child’s spare prose continues to set a very high bar.”—Publishers Weekly (boxed and starred review)
“Another first-class entry in a series that continues to set the gold standard for aspiring thriller authors.”—Booklist (starred review)
“With his usual flair for succinctness and eye for detail, Child creates another rollicking Reacher road trip that will please fans and newcomers alike.”—Library Journal (starred review)

He is now trying to write for Tom Cruise. If you have read his earlier books there is no comparison.
Lee Child is Lee Child!
Love Lee Child and his pal Jack Reacher! They’re always into something!
love this series
The craftsmanship produced over and over by Lee Child is brain candy. The build up always leads to a page turning crescendo finishing with a clean canvas for Reacher’s next adventure.
Child strikes again! Even an ordinary day in a remote area turns up a few unsavory characters for Reacher to deal with in his own way. Always entertaining.
I’m a loyal reader and this installment did not disappoint
slow reading reacher…
As always, Lee Child brings us an all nighter, peopled with Jack Reacher and a smorgasbord of characters, likeable to despicable, making for a mystery not easily solved. An added bonus – Past Tense brings to life Jack Reacher’s father, Stan, and many notes of Jack’s early life that we have only guessed at before now.
I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, Lee Child, and Random House, Ballantine Books, Delacorte Press. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.
Typical Jack Reacher tale.
Slow to start with story development and good action packed ending where the bad guys get what they deserve.
I never get tired of this author’s stories and the character development.
Good read!!
I enjoy the Reacher series of books and I always get a new title whenever it comes out.
With every page Lee Child keeps you hanging on. Keep wanting more and more.
I love the Jack Reacher series. Always keeps me guessing & intense. Can’t put the books down once I start reading. Want to read the next one before I’ve even finished the one I’m reading. If they weren’t so expensive would just keep reading one right after the other.
Not up to his usual par.
not at all up to his standard,Jack playing second fiddle, like his movie fill in, a foot shorter and 100# lighter…
Lee Child does it again with new Jack Reacher book. Great story with twists.
A typical Jack Reacher story. Great read! Lee Child continues to do great work.
Lee Child does it again. A bizarre and complex plot with uniquely detailed descriptions that make the book run like a movie in your head. Child makes you see his story. Lots of suspense, a bit too much violence for my taste, but classic Reacher, the nomad who stumbles on injustices that need to be righted. The Reacher way.
It’s Reacher, you either love or you don’t. Was expecting something a little different but was surprised. Ready for the next book…
Lee Child can do no wrong and at his worst, Jack Reacher is a phenomenal and wonderful character. I wouldn’t miss any of his adventures. This may not be the very best in the series, but it is excellent.
