#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Family secrets come back to haunt Jack Reacher in this electrifying thriller from “a superb craftsman of suspense” (Entertainment Weekly). Jack Reacher hits the pavement and sticks out his thumb. He plans to follow the sun on an epic trip across America, from Maine to California. He doesn’t get far. On a country road deep in the New England woods, he sees a sign to … the New England woods, he sees a sign to a place he has never been: the town where his father was born. He thinks, What’s one extra day? He takes the detour.
At the same moment, in the same isolated area, a car breaks down. Two young Canadians had been on their way to New York City to sell a treasure. Now they’re stranded at a lonely motel in the middle of nowhere. The owners seem almost too friendly. It’s a strange place, but it’s all there is.
The next morning, in the city clerk’s office, Reacher asks about the old family home. He’s told no one named Reacher ever lived in town. He’s always known his father left and never returned, but now Reacher wonders, Was he ever there in the first place?
As Reacher explores his father’s life, and as the Canadians face lethal dangers, strands of different stories begin to merge. Then Reacher makes a shocking discovery: The present can be tough, but the past can be tense . . . and deadly.
Don’t miss a sneak peek of Lee Child’s novel Blue Moon in the back of the book.
Praise for Past Tense
“Child is one writer who should never be taken for granted.”—The New York Times Book Review
“[Lee Child] shows no signs of slowing down. . . . Reacher is a man for whom the phrase moral compass was invented: His code determines his direction. . . . You need Jack Reacher.”—The Atlantic
“Superb . . . Child neatly interweaves multiple narratives, ratchets up the suspense (the reveal of the motel plot is delicious), and delivers a powerful, satisfying denouement. Fans will enjoy learning more of this enduring character’s roots, and Child’s spare prose continues to set a very high bar.”—Publishers Weekly (boxed and starred review)
“Another first-class entry in a series that continues to set the gold standard for aspiring thriller authors.”—Booklist (starred review)
“With his usual flair for succinctness and eye for detail, Child creates another rollicking Reacher road trip that will please fans and newcomers alike.”—Library Journal (starred review)

Another Lee Child formula book with a somewhat interesting twist as Reach finds himself looking into his father’s never talked about past. A second plot line involving some sick men playing deadly games rounds out the action and intersects with Reacher’s family search. Reacher gets to crack heads, but not as much as in other books.
Jack Reacher goes home to New Hampshire and trouble follows. Love this one as I love them all!
Childs never disappoints!
My first full Reacher outing, quite enjoyed it.
Always look forward to a new Jack Reacher.
Typical Jack Reacher book. I have read every Jack Reacher book and they are very predictable. This one more so. No surprises here!
Love to see what Jack Reacher is up to….very good book
The best Jack Reacher book in a while.
I love Jack Reacher – such a great character. This next adventure is very well-written, but the story dragged a bit as Reacher tries to track down his genealogy in the small town of Laconia. The intrigue with two stranded Canadian guests in a strange, off the beaten path hotel keeps you turning the pages and the payoff as the two trails merge together is great. Just took a bit too long to get there for me. Still, if you’re a fan of the Reacher series, you don’t have a choice but to read this one.
Typical Reacher
Not the usual Lee Child book. Too much about the couple and not enough of the main person Jack Reacher Hope this was just an off book.
Not one of Lee’s best. Not a bad story at all but just too far from our beloved Reacher. Needed more bully beating and less weird mystery.
One of his better recent books although still a long way from his earlier books. Starting with his “61 hours” book they have been lacking a little something. They are just not as edgy as his first books were. Having said that I would still recommend this book as Lee Child even when he is not quite at his best is still better than most of the authors out there today.
You can’t go wrong with Lee Child and the Jack Reacher character.
Great read for my annual Reacher fix. I could not see where it was going until the action started, then things went as expected with a win for Reacher and the good guys and a bad loss for the bad guys. Expected results but a “can’t put it down” as always. I have read the entire series and none have disappointed.
I have always enjoyed the Jack Reacher books, by this author. This one is no exception.
One of the best Reacher novels. Reacher is a modern day Shane, incapable of of turning away from injustice.
Additionally, there are actually 3 plots including Reacher’s search for an ancestor that eventually dovetail very nicely.
If you’re a Reacher fan you’ll be very satisfied.
A typical Teacher book. It seems like Reacher is killing more people.
Always a good read. Love “Reacher”, hard to wait for more.
Not Lee Child’s best effort. Parts of the book dragged on.
