Then Cal finds himself caught up in a vicious revenge plot, chasing someone set on delivering retribution. In Cal’s experience, it’s only ever a matter of time before threats turn into action. . . .

Linwood Barclay is a certified master of the suburban thriller.
As this story breezes along the wind picks up, pulling with it clues, shocks and twists.
Soon we are at gale-force level suspense. And by the end we’re in the eye of a full-blown hurricane of tension and uncertainty.
Cal Weaver, former Promise Falls, NY PD and now a PI, is hired to protect young Jeremy Pilford.
Jeremy is hated by just about the whole world for having recently been acquitted for running-over and killing a young woman. An act he admits he did.
Or did he?
There’s a call for vigilante justice. On social media and elsewhere.
Cal’s got his work cut out for him.
Promise Falls PD detective Barry Duckworth is investigating a case of a young man, Brian Gaffney, who has no recollection of the last two days but now has a bizarre tattoo on his back.
Brian has no clue as to what the inked message means.
No one else does either.
Oh, but they will find out. And so will you. Shockingly.
As the cases become connected, we’re reminded why it’s so darn enjoyable to read Linwood Barclay.
It’s for the love of a finely-crafted tale, structured and presented perfectly.
So, so good.
The well-drawn characters are the threads that hold the fabric of this mystery together.
They feel real with flaws, foibles and dreams of regular folks.
Positively wonderful.
Thriller lovers, you can’t go wrong with anything written by Linwood Barclay.
This book is a case in point!
Barclay can spin a tale and keep you guessing throughout the book. This one was just that. Several stories separate but connected and trying to make those connections keeps you up at night reading when you should be sleeping. The only thing I didn’t care for in this book was the ending. Not going to give it away, but just say it was a surprise! On to the next Barclay book in my TBR stack: “Trust your Eyes”
Linwood Barclay’s New book “Parting Shot” is a gripping suspense thriller, totally packed with scandal, intrigue, mystery, history, and a twist you will not see coming! I couldn’t stop listening. Barclay is my favorite author, I can’t say enough about his writing, character development and storylines. Barclay never disappoints and in Parting Shot he’s once again show us why he is the master at what he does. I highly recommend!!!!!
Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord according to the Bible except there are those that reside in Promise Falls, New York that would rather take matters into their own hands. This is another gripping and tension filled book about the residents of Promise Falls. There is a killer on the loose that is paying back those who have committed crimes and got away with them. Detective Duckworth is back along with Cal Weaver trying to figure out what exactly is happening to certain residents of Promise Falls. There are side stories and many twists that you almost need a playbook to keep up. This book will not disappoint you if you enjoy a book with multiple mysteries. I am very happy Barclay continued this series.
