This was refreshingly different. While I do enjoy fantasy sometimes, I usually shy away from stories of royalty in non-existent kingdoms. This one is set in the area of Iran, more or less. The king is a younger son of an English duke, his queen the daughter of a now powerless despot. There’s a bit of intrigue about getting James back to England. But mostly it’s about tested trust and love between the king and queen. This serves as a prequel to a series I am curious to read.

This is the start for the series “The Return of the Mountain King” . I went back and read the first books after I had read and reviewed the last two. Reading the books in order helped to fill in some of the gaps I was missing. James is the son of Duke who was sent away for wanting to marry a woman his father didn’t approve of. When he was captured in a foreign land, his father refused to pay the ransom. Instead of being killed he meets and marries Mahzad who becomes his life. They have eight children together when the marriage starts to seem off. Both James and Mahzad have gotten caught up in running the Kingdom, raising all those children and forgot each other. When His father sends men to bring him home and take his place in society, only if he will forgo his wife and all of his children !! Then add in a woman from his past that wants to be him mistress !! Oh, My there are twist and turns before both will learn what is the most important thing in life. For a short story this has a lot going on and will hold you interest thru the whole book. I wish I would have read them in order….
This is a wonderfully well-written story of an exiled son who finds love in a foreign land. These characters an well developed and find out how love can be tested over time. I love the strength of characters she show over time (which she gets it naturally from her feisty grandmother). He tries to help, but ends up doing silly things which she has to get over. A must read and I cannot wait to read more by her.

This is the 5th book I’ve read written by Jude Knight; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.
I loved the chemistry between the characters.

Jude Knight has masterfully woven a story a wonderful story of family responsibility, drama, love found, love lost in the responsibilities of life and love rekindled in spite of danger and outside interference. Jude’s characters are exceptionally well written and defined. It’s easy to become immersed and invested in their lives and trials. I absolutely loved this must read story! Jude has a lovely way with prose as so aptly demonstrated in this story. The exciting thing about it is the synopses of more books featuring this family. I look forward to reading them all. Thank you Jude for such a well written and beautiful love story.
This may be Jude Knight’s finest work—and considering her other wonderful stories, that is saying something. This story of love gone cold, love under attack, and love regained touched me profoundly. Here careful research is only exceeded by the depth of her characterization and the beauty of her prose.
Book one in The Children of the Mountain King series a well written short story that kept me turning pages. James is the son of an English duke, he lives in Pari-Daiza Vadi, part of the old kingdom of Persia. He rules there with his wife, Mahzad. They have been married for fifteen years and eight children. But he is spending more and more time on kingdom business, away from his family and his father wants him back but without his wife and children. Cecily McInnes an old English friend, has followed him back to his family and will try to cause a lot of trouble. I want to read the next book. Enter a world created by master storyteller Jude Knight that will engage all of your senses with her strong characters, rulers of a kingdom that comes alive in the imagination!
James, the son of an English Duke had been exiled when he was young for wanting to marry a woman his and her fathers had forbidden. His father had him tied up and put on a ship to be taken as far from England as possible and on his way home had been captured by the Khan who wanted to ransom him to his father. But by fate he ended up as a commander for the Khan due to his skills and as a personal guard to his daughter Mahzad.
He and Mahzad married and ruled the kingdom with their eight children. But now his father wants James back to England because his brother is sickly and thinks he may be in line soon to inherit the title.
Prepare to take a journey with this amazing couple who go through a trial to recapture thier strong love and defend against the forces of the outside world that seek to destroy that union. Wonderful.
Jude Knight writes a wonderful story of an exiled son who finds love in a foreign land and of how love can be tested over time. I love the strength that Mahzad exhibits (and she gets it naturally from her feisty grandmother, a wonderful addition to the story) throughout the story. While at times I wanted to club James over the head for the stupid things he pulls while he ‘thinks’ he is helping. Anxiously waiting the next in the series!!
Although James is the son of an English duke, he has preferred to live in Pari-Daiza Vadi, part of the old kingdom of Persia. He rules there with his wife, Mahzad. After fifteen years and eight children, is the passion gone from their marriage? James is gone longer each time he leaves to take care of kingdom business. Now his father had sent agents to bring James home to England, but without Mahzad and their children. Enter an old friend, Cecily McInnes, what kind of trouble will she cause in the already troubled marriage? Throw in an invasion at their mountain kingdom door, an unwanted visit from Mahzad’s father and grandmother, and there is a lot of tension in the kingdom. This is a very nice read, quickly read, and greatly enjoyed. After the ending, there are synopses of more books featuring this family. I see a lot of reading ahead. This well-written, family-friendly tale of Europeans in the Middle-East in the late eighteenth century takes only a couple hours. I look forward to reading more by this author.

In discovering the mysteries of the East, James has built a new life he’s married to Mahzad & they rule their small kingdom together but after over a decade together and eight children, they each think the other isn’t in love any more. There are obstacles in their way, interfering fathers, a threatened invasion.
A lovely novella which I read in a sitting, James & Mazhad both desperate to be together but circumstances keeping them apart. As always great characters & a well written well paced story
