Lady Irene Hiller heard slow footsteps of someone moving around in her room the footsteps came to a stop and she heard breathing next to her bed as she got ready to scream hand landed on her nose and mouth and the sound was muffled. She thought she was going to die the man holding her told her she would scream he would remove his hand she kept fighting he released her and the air came rushing back into her lungs it was bless and he threatened to kill her if she tried to scream. Wanted to know where the book was except she didn’t know what book you wanted. And this is the beginning of Lady Irene’s story. Her midnight visitor kept returning and telling her about her father’s businesses and she kept discovering the corruption that existed in the businesses. Her father had been the Duke of Van Dero had died two months after her brother had died. Her cousin had inherited the title she had inherited the businesses and half the wealth. Irene was in love Lord Clive, the Marquess of Fawley and had been since he stole her hairpin that had been her mother’s. She thought he had kept it for himself and that he was in love with her. To find out what happens in the rest of the book is read. It’s a very good book…
An incredibly powerful and painful novel, this book brings to light the devastation caused by man’s greed for power and the lengths they will go to get what they want. Lady Irene has loved Clive for years without realising that even though he kept his distance, there were those who would hurt her just because she had feelings for him. With her father’s death, it opens a can of worms that Irene never anticipated. Betrayal comes from sources close to her and even those she thought she could trust, prove to be unworthy of her kind heart. The underbelly of society is exposed as various parties hone in for the same prize. Whilst the story is painful and suspenseful, it is also deeply romantic as Clive’s heart start to soften and mend through Irene’s unwavering belief and love for him. As secrets and past crimes start to tumble into the light, the Lost Lords once again stand together to protect those they love. The novel is well written with an intricate plot and keeps the reader in suspense through to the end. There are still some unanswered questions, but no doubt the author plans to bring these to light in a future book. Highly recommended.
Hurt Like No Other
When I first started this series my expectation was that these would be your typical regency romances but they have proven to be more than that upon the reading of each book.
Each book has evolved upon the telling of each characters story and Clive’s story was deeper than ever imagined. This character went through and is still struggling with unresolved issues and boy did I feel for him as the story unraveled.
No the character of Irene if compared to the woman of the day would be considered desperate and delusional. What woman would believe a man loved her just because he took something precious from her and then cling to this belief for six years. Well thank you this is not current times and her steadfastness in believing and loving may net her her hearts desire.
Totally recommending this series to anyone that loves a mystery, underhanded dealings, love that conquers more obstacles and hard headed men and justice prevailing in many different ways some not even legal.
