I found the characters were extremely honest and realistic. It was easy to identify with them throughout the story. So it begins. At the tender age of three, the H saw his mother commit suicide after finding out her husband died in battle. The H’s uncle an earl took him in and somehow crafted his life to be dependent on him. The H was reclusive, had no friends and his father’s thriving tobacco business run by his uncle had taken a nosedive. The H had always trusted that his uncle had his best interests at heart. So, he entrusted his uncle to take full control of running a failing business. The H had abandoned his childhood home and grew up with his uncle. The local folklore stated that his home was haunted. The uncle insisted the H sell the home and put the money back into the business. One day at the manor assessing things he received two unexpected guests and their maids. The h and her younger sister loved haunted ghost stories and wanted to explore the home. They were shocked to see the H there. Thinking he was a ghost they screamed and ran. When he caught up to them, they realized he was a real person. There was an immediate attraction between the H and h. When the H approached the h’s father to court her, it took some persuading but the father agreed. The H and h courted for a few months. But when marriage was brought up the father was against it. The H was poor and had a failing business. The H came up with a brilliant proposal for the father he was sure would not be turned down and asked for the h’s hand in marriage. This was the beginning of happiness, grief, betrayal and sorrow. An excellent story of love, betrayal, partnerships and uncovering of a dark secret twenty years in the making. There was a fairy godfather always watching over the H without him knowing until the time came for him to step forward. A very romantic and moving story. I do recommend it.
Take a child that was orphaned at age three, Reginald, who saw his mother hanging from the stairs when she was told his father died. Mix it with an Uncle, Jacob, who raised him and is ‘running’ their business…right into the ground. Toss in a young woman who LOVES ghost stories, the lovely Amelia, and steals into the house where Reginald’s mother died, since it’s purported to be haunted. When Reginald and Amelia meet, he has an instant attraction to her, and she does to him.
Now selling his ancestral home in London doesn’t interest Reginald as much as it did. He wants Amelia, but to get her he must prove he has the means to support her. As he begins looking into his finances and how his Uncle Jacob has not done right by him, there are people who do not want him to do this at all!
Will Reginald and Amelia be able to solve the mystery, or will they be torn apart? Can they find the happiness they both so deserve?
Very good, and different story line. I enjoyed the read.
