Overture is sweet and steamy and frustrating and breath-taking!! If you like slightly taboo and older man/younger woman books then you will love this one! You are drawn into the story and it’s there where you want to stay. I could almost hear the music Samantha lives and breathes when she plays her violin. I definitely recommend this book and I whole-heartedly look forward to the next book. You don’t need me to tell you what the blurb just told you, so I think you should take my advice and one-click this captivating book! Enjoy!!
Guardian/ward and age gap forbidden romance is one of my favorite tropes and that aspect made this book for me. If those things aren’t your thing you won’t want to read this book, but since they are mine in a big way this was a very pleasant read for me.
I sometimes felt like I was missing something, like there was a background to the world or side characters who made very brief appearances that I didn’t know. I think some of this was a depth/detail issue specific to this book’s story – I prefer a longer, detailed and slower story in general and if that would have been the case here it probably would have been a 5 star for me. As to the side characters, it turns out some appear in previous books by this author that I haven’t read yet, so maybe they will be nice treats for those familiar with them.
Another thing I really enjoyed were the chapter intros of various facts, historical musicians and mentions/playing of songs. I love classical music, especially violin heavy pieces so this, and Samantha’s musicality in general, added a very interesting thread throughout the book.
This is a story of Samantha and Liam. Both had terrible childhoods. Liam rescues Samantha from a childhood of neglect and becomes her guardian. As Samantha matures into a world class violinist her love for Liam also grows…. This is a story of love, angst, loss and danger; with a host of wonderful characters, depth of feelings and intrigue. The rest of their story promises to be just as wonderful – can’t wait.
As always Skye Warren does not disappoint!!!

~~ 5 ELECTRIFYING STARS! ~~
Through the sheer splendor of her spellbinding words, Skye Warren conducted a sumptuous concerto of EPIC proportions!
OVERTURE, book one in the scandalously sexy North Security trilogy, has been one of my most highly anticipated reads of the year! Forbidden love sagas always make my heart race because there’s nothing more enticing than a tantalizingly taboo story that boldly pushes boundaries! And this brilliantly penned, darkly sensuous, age-gap romance was a bona fide masterpiece!!
THE PREMISE:
Under a shroud of secrecy, Liam North became child prodigy Samantha Brooks’ legal guardian when she was 12 years old. Over the next six years, the strong, stoic, powerfully commanding former soldier cared for and nurtured his orphaned ward, and became her fiercest champion and most ardent protector.
Samantha, a brilliant classical violinist destined for grandeur, is eternally grateful to Liam for all he’s done for her. He’s given her the one thing she yearned for most in the world: A place to call home. But as her 18th birthday approaches and she prepares to embark on a worldwide musical tour, a part of her dreads leaving behind the tall, formidable and ferociously overprotective guardian whom she’s secretly pines for.
But unbeknownst to Samantha, her forbidden desires are NOT unrequited. And the more she unwittingly inflames Liam’s carnal hunger, the more vehemently he vows to keep his precious ward at arm’s length. Not only to preserve her virtue but to keep her safe from their enemies. For there’s a dark specter of evil hovering overhead and if he makes one wrong tactical move, lethally dangerous hidden truths would be exposed. And succumbing to the ultimate temptation could be CATASTROPHIC for them both!
MY MUSINGS:
OVERTURE proves once again why Ms. Warren is such a force to be reckoned with. Equal parts WICKEDLY SINFUL, RAVISHLY ROMANTIC and THRILLINGLY TWISTY, this intoxicating romance gave me swoony butterflies, scorched my panties, made my chest ache, and had my adrenaline spiking ! As always, her writing is highly sensuous, gloriously lyrical and deeply moving, and she once again steals our breath—and our hearts–with this brilliantly executed page turner that’s chock full of sizzle, suspense, danger, soul burning emotion, an aura of mystique and even a hint of darkness.
The manner in which Skye Warren transports us into the hearts and minds of these mesmerizing, intricately layered protagonists is NOTHING SHORT OF REMARKABLE! I have always been drawn to this author’s sweet, soulful, endearingly innocent heroines—and holy wow did Samantha burrow herself into my morrow. I was just so smitten with this sheltered music prodigy’s fragile, incandescent beauty, her gentle-natured charm, and her natural, God-given talent. And above all else, I adore how her beautifully forlorn, achingly tender heart only beat for one man. Liam. The strict, quietly authoritative, devastatingly handsome father figure whom she can NEVER have.
Or CAN she?
The former soldier-turned-security operative makes her feel safe and secure—and in all the ways that matter, he becomes her family, her HOME, her soft place to fall. I was intrigued by the tiny glimpses we get into Samantha’s mysterious backstory which ties into her deep-seated fears of abandonment.. As for how Liam factors into her murky past, and came to be her legal guardian, OMG it’s a DOOZY!!
And speaking of our hero….. “Liam is six feet of pure muscle and hard will” and so gruffly alpha and dominantly sexy I was seriously WRITHING WITH ECSTASY! And while he oozes pure animal magnetism, this broody tortured soul wrestles with some mighty demons and bears deeply embedded wounds that rivals Samantha’s. His broken matches her broken, and although Liam may still treat his sweet, obedient ward like the scared little girl she once was, Samantha has blossomed into an incredibly desirable and accomplished young woman. A woman who dreams of offering her brusquely handsome guardian her most sacred gift.
Her virginity,
But that would be highly inappropriate. And sordid . And oh so terribly taboo!! Sighhh..what a conundrum! Liam is a man who NEVER shows signs of weakness, but he has always had a soft spot for Samantha that has suddenly morphed into raging hot desire! And while he tries to camouflage his forbidden lust for his ward under a steely coat of aloof armor, he’s fighting a losing battle.
For underneath this emotionally detached hero’s hard outer shell is one hot-blooded alpha male who hungers for the exquisitely beautiful violinist with every fiber of his being. Oh, what he wouldn’t give for JUST ONE TASTE. To be able to brand her with his rough, savage kisses. Defile and ravish her! Claim her as his. But Samantha is pure, untouched, his most PRECIOUS TREASURE. He must safeguard her all costs…not taint her innocence with his filthy, covetous desires. However, what’s happening between them is UNSTOPPABLE and when Samantha finally rouses the feral beast that lurks inside of Liam’s carefully controlled veneer, prepare to hear him roar!
Gah! Talk about a book with PALPABLE PUSH-PULL from start to finish! The intense inner war these two wage as their platonic relationship takes a rather shocking turn is throbbing with agonizing angst, teeming with soul deep yearning and pulsating with pent up desires! Each and every quiver-inducing, nerve-wracking moment they shared together tied my tummy in knots and had me so hot and bothered I nearly LOST MY MIND!
However, you better be a fan of emotional roller coasters and delayed gratification because this first book is one DELECTABLE TEASE. Skye Warren sure proves to be a maestro at building anticipation, orchestrating a slow, seductive tango between these two forbidden lovers, and when all that pent-up passion that’s been bubbling beneath the surface finally reaches a shattering crescendo, prepare to be BLOWN AWAY!!!
In addition to the main romantic story arc, I also really enjoyed the interaction with Liam’s equally badass brothers, Josh and Elijah, who work alongside him at North Security. And the author sure whets our appetites for their stories as well!!!
BOTTOM LINE:
I was completely and utterly transfixed by OVERTURE! And since this first installment ends on a jaw dropping cliffy, it’s anyone’s guess where this iron-hearted guardian and his beloved ward will end up as they became even deeper ensnared in a treacherous web of passion, pain and peril.
Sigh. Now I shall wait with bated breath for CONCERTO!
Like all Skye’s book this was just as fabulous , check this out, what a fantastic read, you won’t be disappointed.
This book is a must read and I can’t wait for book 2 to be released on May 14th!! Is it May yet??
OMG! Skye Warren never disappoints!! This book is full of tension, sexual tension that is, angst, guilt and lust! It’s so good that it broke my heart. It’s too short and at the same time it’s perfect and I can’t wait for the conclusion. I love the violin, even though I don’t play it, but the descriptions about the music, the instrument and how Samantha and Liam feel are mesmerizing.
I normally don’t like cliffhangers, but Skye’s cliffhangers are the best!! I’m so glad I got to read this story. Thank you Skye!
Overture is the start of Skye Warren’s The North Security series. I was intrigued by the blurb as it hints at a forbidden romance and a bit of suspense behind her past.
Liam became Samantha’s guardian when her only family member left wanted nothing to do with her. Liam never planned to have sole custody of anyone, but his story changed when her father died. Samantha didn’t have the best childhood being raised by her father alone and traipsed all over the place, but it’s what she knew. Her only saving grace – her violin.
Samantha knows that he feelings toward Liam aren’t viewed as normal, but her life has never been normal. Liam knows that he’s bastard and his wayward feelings toward Samantha, cement that notion. He tries not to act on the, but a man can only resist temptation for so long before he takes a bite.
But their forbidden attraction isn’t the only secret being kept. Liam knows about how father died and why but refuses to tell Samantha any of the details. But Samantha won’t go away quietly without knowing about her past.
Skye delivers a very suspenseful story with the forbidden romance as an added bonus to the story line. For those who are leery of this part of the story, Skye keeps it quite PG until she is she 18 – but the whole idea of a guardian and his ward being more is still a prominent part of the story.
I cannot wait to see what happens in Concerto as Skye left us with some interesting new details about Samantha’s past and what it could possibly mean for her future.
Another amazing to start to what I will consider a great suspenseful series.
A orphan, a mysterious man that becomes her guardian, a child prodigy, a damaged man. A mystery to solve. Samantha is turning 18 soon and her life is about to change. A gifted violinist, she is about to go on tour and leave behind the man that cared for her for the last 6 years. Is she ready for it? Is he? In an story full of angst and unresolved feelings, we follow Liam and Samantha on path that will changes their lives. With great friends (even if they put you in the hot seat), brothers, and a whole lot of dangerous things, in the end, Overture is a story about choices. I can’t wait to read about more of it in the next book!
Wow another amazing skye warren book. Definitely a hot steamy story.
4.5/5 Rating
The story line wasn’t your average forbidden romance. The quality was in depth but had a rich slow burn. The characters didn’t exude some type of insta lust and/or insta love. The characters were complex because their past played into how they would interact in the present. At first, I wasn’t quite sure if I would like Samantha. I didn’t want the character to play the role as a brat. I didn’t want them to be immature while seeking the attention of an older gentleman. Thankfully, Samantha wasn’t like that at all. She was such an old soul. She had to grow quickly and wasn’t sure who to trust. I felt like Samantha wanted to place that trust in the hands of her guardian. But she was so scared… Samantha was scared of being abandoned. I feel like all of us has felt abandoned a time or two. Maybe alone…
Liam… I loved his character from the get go. He was man of precision and control. He barely let down his guard. I felt like he wanted to for Samantha but he didn’t know how to it. Liam was all about protecting Samantha from dangerous places and/or people. He wanted her from himself, which made me so sad. I want to make the reader aware, if they didn’t already know, this isn’t a standalone. Overture is just the being of Liam and Samantha’s story. The part happens in Concerto. Don’t know when it will be released but I’m looking forward to it.
Overture is a delectable taboo treat and a remarkable start the North Security series. There was obvious chemistry between Samantha and Liam, however, their age gap and complicated circumstances had kept them from acting on their pull and left them with so much heartache. The dark secrets, the hidden dangers, the near-death experiences had left so many questions yet to be answered. I cannot wait for the next installment to unpeel another layer off the complicated Liam and to see how Samantha soar in the real world.
I received an advance reviewer copy of the book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The more I read from this author the more I love her! Her books have a way to suck me from the beginning to end.
Overture was definitely on my TBR list for a while and it’s no secret how much I love reading taboo tales. I highly enjoy them, they intrigue me.
I absolutely adored Samantha, she was a very mature woman for just shy of her 18th birthday. Her love of music was astounding.
Liam, even though he hid his secrets pretty well, it was nerve wracking to find out what in the world it was he was hiding. How he came about being Samantha’s legal guardian not having any kind of legal bind to her or even the fact that he wasn’t well acquainted with Samantha’s father.
The secrets, the intrigue and the angst had me completely invested in this book. Can’t wait for more of Liam and Samantha!

I’m ashamed to say that is my first adventure into the brilliant mind of Skye Warren. I’m kicking myself for not finding her sooner, but I’ll tell you what…now that I’ve experienced the epic writing style and imagination of hers, there is no going back! THIS BOOK, you guys! It was such an incredible, sexy, forbidden, and thought-provoking read. It’s so enticing, sensual, and delicious! Liam North is a freaking GOD and the other North brothers…I can’t even! I loved Samantha as well. She’s young, but she is smart and bold at times, and her soul matches Liam’s like a puzzle piece. This forbidden delight is laced with mystery, passion, and intrigue and I can’t wait to see where this heart-pounding journey takes us.

I’m going to start this by saying I grew up playing music and I promise you, I’ve never had an experience like Samantha and Liam did during practice. I felt like that was the best thing to start this review with. WHEW! *Fanning myself…*
Overture is a sexy and forbidden slow burn romance that had me watching like a hawk. You could feel the chemistry building and I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to skip ahead get to that magical moment. If you feel like that, don’t skip. It makes it all the must better to feel that burn. To feel that tension building.
Liam has had custody of Samantha for six years but it’s clear that his feelings towards her are not as they should be. What he doesn’t know is that Samantha is harboring the same feelings. Now one just might push the other until there is no return.
If you like slow burns and taboo romance, then be ready for Overture to suck you in and make you hold on for dear life. I had a great time with this book and read it in on sitting.
Samantha is a violinist, who is an orphan who is taken in by an older gentleman named Liam. Liam and his two brothers own a security company. Who also happens to have several secrets that pertain to Sam. All she knows is that Liam has always looked out for her. I am curious to see what happens with these two in the next book Concerto.

I’ve loved every book I’ve ever read from Skye Warren and Overture is no exception. This captivating page-turner will have you hooked from start to finish. Forbidden, steamy yet heart-wrenching this tale will take you on an emotional roller-coaster ride. This story was a bit of a slow burn but the sexual tension was raw and intense and ever present throughout.
This age-gap romance was well-written and was more than just a romance. It was a bit suspenseful and had secrets, lies, something suspicious entwined in the story. The characters were flawed yet well-developed and were supported by a range of secondary characters who all added to the story. The ending will having you screaming and leave you wanting more. Wow I really can’t wait for the next book. This novel was a phenomenal read and I would highly recommend it.
Loved.
The tension and chemistry were off the charts. Skye has a talent of being her characters alive and into the reader’s heart.
What this book needs is a standing ovation. Out of all Skye Warren’s couples, this one is definitely the most heartfelt I’ve read. Usually her male characters feel like men without emotions, violent, dangerous and barely living on the right side of the law. Liam North, on the contrary, lives squarely on the right side, a military man who hires mercenaries in the defense of the nation. He’s still violent and dangerous, but he keeps it locked deep inside. Samantha is virtuous, obedient, respectful and a violin prodigy.
Samantha’s father died six years ago when she was twelve and her older brother refused to take custody of her. Liam requested custody and has given her the care and stability she never had. He’s protective but emotionless, she’s obedient because she’s always afraid of being left behind. As she nears her majority of age, all she wants is her guardian, but he appears like he’s just doing his duty, not one feeling more. Inside Liam is a beast that wants to claim his prey, and a secret he doesn’t want to reveal.
This story feels like foreplay, with a sexual tension that vibrates from the pages. Liam and Samantha have strong feelings but they are at a crossroads and they seem to have different ideas on what should happen. Reading this book is at times entertaining and others frustrating because you want to hit someone in the head for being stubborn. I loved Samantha, she’s very mature and wise for her age, at the same time that she’s innocent and caring. I could feel Liam’s torment and his sense of not being worthy of a girl so much younger, talented and pure. Even so, I love the way the story is going because there will be fun times ahead in the next installment.
