I would have liked a definitive ending.
A seductive and utterly addicting story of temptation and forbidden desire. This is Skye Warren at her best!
Intriguing, dark and flirting with taboo, this sexy read left me wanting more!
Overture is a beautiful composition of forbidden love and undeniable desire. Skye has crafted a gripping, sensual, and intense story that left me breathless. Get ready to be hooked!
I want to start this review by stating that Skye Warren is one of my favorite authors. I’ll read anything she writes. I also have experience playing instruments and I’m passionate about the orchestra and classical music, so some things may have bothered me about this book more than other readers. I understand my opinion is in the minority.
I wasn’t a fan of how incomplete book one felt. Many authors these days are creating trilogies, because they sell well. What I’ve noticed is the first book feels almost incomplete. Instead of feeling like a full story, it’s clear the author wrote one story and then divided it into three pieces. This is how book 1, Overture, feels to me.
Since I’m passionate about music, I was hoping music would play a larger role. The emphasis on the Hero’s military business and OTT background regarding Samantha’s father felt very extra to me and unrealistic.
This did not feel very taboo to me, since everyone was basically ok with H/h being together. This is taboo-light and more contemporary romance.
I was annoyed that the quotes at the start of each chapter were violin facts. I would have preferred quotes that added to the story, such as quotes about music and love. I googled one of the quotes and “25 interesting violin facts” popped up in my google search. I loved the quotes Skye Warren added in Better When It Hurts and Even Better. They were thoughtful and added to the story. I’m not a fan of ‘random fact’ quotes. In this story they ruined my immersion and did not follow the tone of the book.
This is the first series by Skye Warren I won’t read all the way through. I’m stopping at Overture. I really love some of her older books and I hope her next books veer away from OTT, extra plots and contain the realism and intimacy that were in Wanderlust and Better When It Hurts.
Overture is popular, and many readers love it. My opinion is in the minority and I encourage all readers to try this book and decide for yourself if it works for you.
Forbidden Romance with a suspense subplot
This story drew me in with is forbidden taboo romance theme and then the added suspense subplot kept me completely engaged. Liam is a dark, demanding, and controlling protector. Samantha is his ward. Liam past is a dark one and he fights his demons every day. Samantha and her music soothes the savage beast Liam believes he is. Samantha has been used and abused by her father until she is left alone after his death. Liam and the North Brothers are first home she’s known where she feels safe. But is she really? Liam is trying to not only keep her safe from outside forces but mostly from his dark self. Samantha is having none of that and is knocking down all his self control. Skye’s writing allows me to be up close and personal with her characters and the story she is telling. This storyline kept me engaged. It ends in a bit of a question. I recommend this book!
Liam became Samantha, a story very unique, when you have feelings for your guardian. Liam knows he shouldn’t pursue anything with Samantha, but it is getting harder to not be. Their forbidden attraction will make you read it all and want for more and more. But as secrets are kept and they are about to be discovered will those ruin everything. Just a stellar new masterpiece you need to read.
This book is so good, I might have to read it again. And again. I loved the short, informative blurbs at the beginnings of each chapter. They were witty, surprising sometimes, and always fascinating.
The push-pull between the main characters is gutwrenching and yet still beautiful. The story is almost haunting in its drama. Both characters have horrible backgrounds from when they were young children, and this fact shaped their adult outlook and behavior.
It will pull on your heartstrings as you read their story. Just a beautiful book.
Okay, first off this better not be the end of their story because there HAS to be more. I’m not ready for their story to be over and I refuse. Their story was left hanging!!!
Y’all, this book was amazing!! Teddy Hamilton and Grace Grant did an amazing job narrating this book! I think I’ve read other books that they’ve narrated, but regardless it was not my last one!
I haven’t read many “daddy” books – more so where the guy is significantly older than the girl. As in a father figure. I think I’ve read a handful of them. I don’t know what it is about them… Maybe because they are forbidden. But man!! There were some steamy scenes that were sooo worth the wait! I cannot wait to read more of Skye’s books!!!
This story definitely fits the description of dark and broody when it comes to Liam. He has such a hard past to overcome that he just can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Samantha has also had some hard blows in her life, but always looks to the positive side of things. These two together will be explosive in more than just the bedroom if it ever comes to pass. Quite a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more with this one. Hopefully the next will be out soon.
And Skye Warren does it again!!! I was in deep from the beginning and couldn’t get out. Liam North…. YES!!!!!
What more could you want in your romance?
Forbidden love/lust/feelings.
May/December romance.
Teddy Hamilton narrating.
Overture has all of this and so much more. It has heart and heat and lust and angst and steam. You’ll be begging these two to cross that line.

I need to say first and foremost that this book is absolutely incredible! The story of Liam North, an ex-military man who runs his own security business, and Samantha, his ward will hold you captive from beginning to end. Liam took in Samantha, a child violin prodigy when she was young. But why did he? Samantha has feelings for him, but being only 17, she can’t act on them. Two people from such different worlds who while you know they belong together, can’t. There are many twists and turns to this story and so many feels! I can’t wait for the next book in this amazing new series!
Before I started reading “Overture”, I didn’t realize that it was an age-gap romance. This genre is not one of my favorites, but the way Skye Warren wrote this story just worked out for me!!
Liam has been Samantha’s guardian for the past 6 years. Even though he’s 16 years older, he can’t help but notice her and feel attracted to her.
Samantha is nearing 18 and in a few months she’ll be leaving the house behind. She’s been having fantasies about Liam for a while but his cold demeanor kept her away. Liam is evoking feelings inside her she can’t resist and needs him to be hers before she leaves.
There is undeniable attraction between them, but Liam knows that is wrong to act on it. It’s not just the age difference; he has secrets regarding her father’s death. He tries to keep away but his feelings are tormenting him.
Through the story I felt the tension between them and the secrets lurking in the shadows. The mystery about what happened with her father made the story even more interesting. After that cliffhanger ending I can’t wait to get my hands on “Concerto”!!!
Skye Warren does it again! I can’t wait for Concerto to see what happens next!
I loved the push and pull between Liam and Samantha. No matter how much Liam desires Samantha he swears that he still protect her and that he is her guardian and he will not go there or ruin her life.
Samantha loves Liam and wants to be with him but she also longs to remember what happened the night she lost her father. The more Samantha longs to be with Liam and the closer she gets the more Liams secrets are at risk of being found out. Will Samantha leave once she finds out what Liam is hiding or will she stay and fight for him?
I loved this book I can’t wait to see what happens next! Im so excited that skye has given us another sexy suspense book!
I am in love with these characters. I loved the pull both Liam and Samantha had towards one another. He resisted as much as he could not only because she was in his care but she was young. Samantha wanted Liam just as much but when he kept pushing her away she didn’t understand it.
This whole story is edgy and forbidden but not completely dark. You get sucked into this story and are left wanting more at the end. Cannot wait to see where Skye Warren takes this in the next book. I need more of these characters.
Overture was an incredible read that had everything in it from the intense and raw characters, taboo, twists and turns and steam. I found this story absolutely seduced me and brought me so in touch with the characters and the story line I felt like I was living it with them. I cannot wait to see what the author has in store next….
This book pulled me in right from the start. The characters are wonderfully written and the emotion is palpable. I remember reading a book from this author a number of years ago and really not enjoying it. For a lot of years that put me off wanting to try again but the premise grabbed me. I’m glad I decided to have another go and I can’t wait for book 2.
Amazing First book in the Series
This was my first Skye Warren’s book, and I don’t understand why I haven’t read or listened to her books before. She has an amazing writing! This story has it all: heartbreaking, emotional, steamy, and intriguing, filled with mystery and suspense. All the characters are great. Samantha and Liam are beautiful characters. The supporting characters are also really interesting. The storyline is emotional, addictive and captivating. Unfortunately, the story ends with a cliffhanger, and now I can’t wait to know more about Samantha and Liam. Teddy Hamilton and Grace Grant did an outstanding and amazing job with the narration. I enjoyed listening to this audiobook. #AudiobookObsession
I have never read a Skye Warren book before so I had no clue what to expect. I can honestly say my expectations were far exceeded. It was beautiful and passionate, musically speaking as well as figuratively, sad and incredibly poignant, and I just fell beyond hard for the both of them. One so timid and young, wanting and yearning for something she knows is real but doubts will ever be returned. The other a hard, brutal man who thinks himself a devil, longing for the girl that awakens his soul in a way no one ever has. The storyline and the characters that surround them are just as memorable and leave their mark on each of them. I cannot wait for the next one!
