Overture is a captivating, heart stopping, forbidden romance that sold me from the start. It was completely immersive and totally addictive and I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of this story.
With excellent character development, intriguing and unpredictable plot twists and a cliffhanging non-ending that left me so bookworm frustrated. I was ready to throw my kindle across the room kind of frustrating! And I need the sequel IMMEDIATELY!!!
Overture was exactly the book I was craving, exactly when I needed it most.
Overture is the first book in Skye Warren’s new series! Right from the beginning, Skye’s writing drew me in and now after finishing, I am completely invested in this story and in these characters. I loved all the little fun facts about music, the violin, etc. at the beginning of each chapter, that was a nice little bonus and I knew absolutely none of those facts so it was pretty cool. Overture focuses on Liam and Samantha and is told from dual POV.
Samantha Brooks is a violin prodigy. Her father died when she was 12 years old. The details of that night, Samantha can’t remember. Her mother was dead long before then and the only family she had was an older brother who she didn’t know and who wouldn’t come and claim her. She was left an orphan, until a stranger agrees to become her guardian.
Liam North, the broody, stoic, owner of North Security became Samantha’s guardian when he was just 28 years old. It’s been 6 years since Samantha came into Liam’s care. She is now on the cusp of turning 18 and leaving the compound and Liam to go on a music tour that will take her across the world.
Liam has never been able to look at Samantha as a daughter. Samantha has never looked at Liam as her father. Liam has always kept her at a distance but now that she is about to turn 18 those lines that held them intact as ward and guardian…those lines have started to blur.
The feelings they are both having and hiding from each other are getting harder to suppress, harder to resist the temptation. Samantha wants Liam to think of her as the young woman that she is and not as the child she was when she first came to live with him and she is ready to make him confront his changing feelings for her.
Liam’s horrible childhood and abuse at the hands of his own father shaped him into the stoic, controlled man that he is today. He is convinced that he’s not a good man. He doesn’t think he deserves someone as special and pure as Samantha. Liam wants to keep her safe and protected but he also wants his little bird to spread her wings and leave the nest.
Let me tell you now, the sexual tension in this book… literally scorching hot!
The ending leaves off on a cliffhanger, one I was NOT expecting. I had my suspicions about who could have sent the hitman after Samantha, but I absolutely did NOT see that coming. I can not wait for the next book in this series, I will be impatiently counting down until it’s release. I can’t wait to see what happens the more this story unfolds, not just with Liam and Samantha’s relationship woes but with the threat to her safety as well.
If you like older man-younger woman, alpha male, unforeseen danger, and a sprinkle of denying love, with a hefty side of taboo, then this is the story for you!
*I received an ARC from the author/publisher for my honest review.
No one writes dark, forbidden romance as well as Skye Warren. This book was amazing. Ends perfectly for the next installment. Plenty of slow burn sexual tension. Balanced with action and angst. Wonderfully written and plotted. A must read.
Liam North and Samantha Brooks, two very complex characters. Samantha a child violinist prodigy and Liam North, ex military man, guardian.
How these two meet and the path that they take is paved with many secrets. Some are answered but the path is rocky, feeling are formed and desires are held back. This story borders on taboo but the relationship that develops between them both seems inevitable.
Ms Warren has written a very compelling story. The main characters are both loveable, releatble and easy to like. Even the secondary characters have endearing traits and they added a bit of humour and reality to the story.
Well done Ms Warren I’m now eagerly waiting for Concerto.
omg that ending! ugh where do I start. how could I possibly assume this was some forbidden romance between a young violinist and her guardian? of course there would be a back story of something crazy serious and dangerous. of course there would be a plot that wont let me stop reading it and a twist that leaves me wanting more. hehe and OF COURSE theres ties to characters’ from another one of her books. I love how Bea was in here by the way. ending leaves you in suspense but I wouldn’t call this a cliffhanger as it does give you an end to that storyline. book two! ready and waiting!
There’s something about a Skye Warren book.
You can expect it to be dark, delicious, and dirty, all the while packing a whooping of emotions. This book was no different.
Samantha Brooks is a violin prodigy. She is delicate and young, a trademark of Skye’s heroines. After the death of her parents, she was sent to live with Liam North, her new guardian.
Liam is a hardened soldier. He is a man of routine, and Samantha is his ward to protect. He dictates every moment of her life. Liam is almost like a father to Samantha.
But he’s also not.
It’s only natural for Samantha to fall into lust with this man. The kind of power she has over this man is heady. Liam does his best to protect Samantha from his baser instincts, but fails spectacularly.
There’s more to this book than meets the eye. It’s not just a age-gap romance. There’s a story going on. Things Samantha has no idea about. Things Liam wants to protect her from.
I went into this thinking it was a standalone, only to come to the end and realize that it wasn’t. I cant wait for the next book!
If you’ve read Skye Warren, then you know about Tanglewood, the fictional city of the Warren Universe. Now, this book is not necessarily set there. However, the h of this book, Samantha, will find herself there. Why does this matter, you might ask? Because Tanglewood has become synonymous with tortured heroes. It doesn’t matter which Skye Warren book you read, the hero is a tortured soul who is seemingly emotionally unavailable to anyone, instead choosing a solitary, alpha existence devoid of personal connection.
This is true of Skye Warren’s latest book, Overture. Now, firstly, you should know that this book ends on a cliffhanger. There is another book coming, Concerto. I, for one, am anxiously awaiting the second book, given the end of Overture.
This story follows Liam and Samantha. Liam is Samantha’s guardian, although he is not related to her. Liam takes on her guardianship after the death of her father as a way to protect her. You see, Samantha is a violin prodigy. There are many ways that she could be exploited, and Liam brings structure and protection to her life given her talent.
However, over time, Samantha has developed an attraction to Liam. She wants him as something more than a guardian. As she is turning eighteen in this book and beginning a tour post-graduation, she wants Liam. Similarly, Liam has very strong feelings about Samantha, but he struggles with not acting upon them because he knows he must let her go, and he is not emotionally available to her due to his past. These two are tortured from the outset of this book, and it is deliciously painful to read.
Now, I imagine there are people who would struggle with this relationship. Yes, they are attracted to each other, but there is no action between them until Samantha turns eighteen. Even more, Samantha is an old soul because, when her father was alive, he did very little to adequately care for her. She had to grow up fast. Her character seems so mature in this book that it never feels horribly forbidden for them to investigate their feelings for each other.
Unfortunately, Skye Warren’s heroes must struggle to claim their heroines. The torture of Liam and Samantha is palpable in this book. I know as I was reading it that my stomach was clenched in knots. It wasn’t from the forbidden aspect of the book; it was mostly related to Samantha’s need for an emotional connection with Liam and his unwillingness to give it to her. I think one of the most heart-wrenching truths of this story is Samantha’s relationship with Liam as her guardian. For the years that she lives under Liam’s guardianship, she lives a life of stoic obedience to Liam’s rules out of fear of losing her safety. Her life with him, for her, feels contingent upon blind obedience. This truth felt heavy for me. It was the one aspect of the book that sat with me the most. I cannot imagine living with the fear of disownment that one feels it necessary to live beyond expectations. My heart felt heavy for Samantha throughout the story.
There is something always deep within a Skye Warren book, a truth about the darkness of human nature. It’s one of the reasons I love to read her novels. I know I will have to work for the “happily ever after” at the end, and, even then, there will be sadness mixed into the H/h’s relationship. I am fairly certain this will be the case with Liam and Samantha, if they find a HEA for themselves. However, I believe, much like the other characters in Warren’s Tanglewood, these two will torture themselves and their readers before the end comes.
P.S. I loved this book, even more so than her last series.

5 OVERTURE STARS!! Get ready for a delicious taste of forbidden fruit. This story sucks you in and you can’t put it down. It is full of sexiness, forbidden, suspense, drama and so much love. Liam and Samantha have a fantastic story to tell you, so open your ears and listen. I can’t wait for the next book. Skye Warren is always a 1-Click author for me and I am so happy I did, love this book.
MASTERPIECE.
This story charmed me like the hypnotizing sound of the violin. Skye Warren has created a perfect forbidden romance that combines the delicate world of classical music with the harshness that surrounds military world. This bittersweet mix resulted in a story that got under my skin and which continuation I want to follow immediately!
Samantha Brooks is a violin prodigy who’s about to finish high school and go on a tour to share her talent with the world. The girl had quite a tough childhood because first her mother died and later at the age of 12 she was orphaned by her father. Since then her legal guardian is Liam North – an ex-military with whom Samantha is in love. In addition to the obvious barrier which is the guardian/charge relationship, we also have a problem with the age gap. But despite the years apart between Samantha and Liam, none of them can stop fantasizing about the other. However, Samantha will be leaving soon… and Liam lives in the belief that he’s not worthy of love and that he isn’t able to give it anyway.
Oh, my heart. It hurts. It hurts because this book is a delicious slow-burn that made my appetite grow with every turned page and Skye Warren, instead of relieving me in this hunger, decided to end it with cliffhanger. And what am I to do now, poor me? I need the continuation as soon as possible!
I’m totally in love with Liam. This man is a walking temptation and I’m not surprised at all that Samantha loves him. Sexy as hell, mysterious and commanding. Wherever he appears, he immediately gain obedience. Samantha in turn raised mixed feelings in me… On the one hand she’s a little bit of an ‘old soul’ but she also had moments where her youthful naivety showed up.
I’m completely captivated by this story. I hope that Skye Warren will not let me wait for too long for the next part because now I feel like hiding in the corner and crying that I can’t get to know the continuation immediately.
Liam and Samantha’s story drew me in from the first pages and never let me go. Skye Warren is the master of writing stories that will have you reading the entire book in one sitting. Clear your calendar because you will not do anything but read this book the entire day! Liam is awarded guardianship of Samantha when she was 12 after losing her father. She is musical child prodigy on the violin. Liam is very protective of her. Years go by and Samantha respects Liam as a guardian. The closer she becomes 18; she starts to develop feelings for Liam. Liam notices the way she looks for him and he starts to have those feels as well but deflects the feelings he’s having for her. The attraction is almost forbidden or taboo because he is the guardian and she is in his care even though they are not related by blood. Samantha sets out (the closer she becomes eighteen) to show Liam she is becoming a woman. This is another amazing, dark and sultry romance for Skye Warren!
Nope! Not like this!
Overture is the first book in the new series North Securities and what a way to begin what looks to be a very intense and at times taboo series
Liam and Samantha – I am a bit speechless when it comes to these two. Taboo takes on a whole new meaning
He is her guardian – She is his temptation – The forbidden flower that has blossomed
What happens when the universe allows for a brief taste of the forbidden? When for a moment in time there is No right, No wrong, only the chance to indulge your cravings without shame?
An Overture is created – One that will rival the greatest compositions ever composed
Be warned this may cause a sense of unease followed by moments of apprehension and bursts of angst – Oh and let us not forget the taboo romance that will melt the coldest of hearts
This does end on a cliffy – No tantrums
Okay have to say I was kind of iffy on this story. There were times where it seemed wrong for Samantha to have these feelings yet Liam remained strong. In some cases he would have caved but felt Samantha just came out to strong most times. Forbidden love can sometimes sound wrong yet Skye Warren did this in a way that came out right in all ways. All in all it was good but wanted more of Liam in this book.
“I received an eBook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own.”
If you love forbidden romance, then you absolutely cannot miss Overture! It was taboo! It was SEXY! It was UNPUTDOWNABLE!!!
Liam wasn’t family by blood. He was her guardian, the man that raised her since she was twelve after her father died.
Samantha is a child prodigy. Her gift for the violin and her love of music is so much a part of who she is. Liam nurtured and encouraged that gift.
She’s almost eighteen now and the feelings she has for Liam are anything but paternal. Her love for Liam is something she can no longer ignore, but Liam is fighting his own ghosts. Will he ever see her as more than the little girl who became his ward? Can he resist grown up Samantha?
Forbidden romance is my ultimate weakness. This story was so much more than I had expected. The tension…the build up…the almost moments…were incredibly HOT! As I was nearing the end, I wanted to slow it down…I wanted to keep reading. I wanted it ALL! I NEED to know EVERYTHING! I look forward to more as Samantha and Liam’s story continues.
OVERTURE is a hyper hypnotic song of the conscious soul, angsty love and sinful desire! Guaranteed to play your heart, mind, and body like the perfect cord. Yet will leave you on the edge like a melodramatic opera. Which will play out in your mind over and over again? Playing with thoughts and mind fucking you with thoughts of Samantha and Liam!!! DEAR GOD YES!!!
OMFG Brilliant!!!!
Intense, involving, desire, the forbidden, so well written, great character development: these are just some of the ingredients that make this such a very good read. I love it when an author has the skill to start a series, that will continue into the next book, with many questions, but leaves you with a huge sense of satisfaction from the current developments.
In Overture, Skye Warren has begun writing about a world within the world. I hadn’t expected some of the main aspects as I was drawn so deeply into the gorgeously rich descriptions of music and the art of both playing and listening to, a vertuoso creating beauty through their unique gift. Skye infused this book with both a respect for such a gift and a sense of wonder at it.
Liam’s, and his brothers’, ‘trade’ is such a contrast to the potential, future life of the young prodigy in their midst. This contrast is wrapped in the intrigue that makes up and mixes together, their lives.
I am looking forward immensely, to what the next layers of this story will reveal when Samantha gets to Tanglewood.

Ah yes! Skye Warren is at it again. She always does this to me. She sucks me in a world of desire, intrigue, and suspense. A world of questionable decisions, desires, and needs. She sets you up with a potential lover, a family dynamic, or a need for protection. Wary at first but then you settle in. You get used to the protection, used to the desire, used to the familiar. You are so used to it that- BAM!
Completely caught off guard by the end of the book.
I have never been more grateful for the promise of another book. I know, I know. I’m greedy but you’ll see. If you are like me, you watch that percentage on your kindle increasing to the point you start twitching in fear. Fear of not getting enough, fear of being without, fear of not seeing the clues along the way.
This tempting tale has it’s own deliciously naughty desire. Untapped desire. Unyielding need. It’s a treasure chest of sin waiting to pull you in…
Overture was the prelude to a Concerto I will absolutely be present for!

This is brilliant in every single word written and delicious and hits you hard in all the right places and leaves you with so much intense feelings some heartbreaking as Samantha a violin prodigy is taken in by the one and only Liam North as her ward at 12 years of age and now she turns 18 and the feelings and emotions these two have are very mixed and fought all the way but it seems so natural at the same time and is very intense with dangers lurking everywhere and so so beautiful I couldn’t put it down, it sucks you in and wont let go, Im still thinking about it that’s the impact this story will have on you. The writing is perfection and written with such emotion. I loved it and cannot wait for more.

Overture by Skye Warren gripped me from the start! A forbidden story, an age gap and guardian story, that was so freaking emotional and steamy. Samantha became Liam North’s ward as a child. He has taken care of her and nurtured her talent, but she is all grown up now and their chemistry is undeniable.
Liam was a strong and determined man and very protective and caring man towards Samantha. He wants her to have the world, even if it means losing her. Samantha has been through so much, but one thing she knows is how she feels for Liam. But will ever see her as more as than his ward? I loved watching these two together and seeing their relationship slowly change.
I devoured Overture by Skye Warren. It was a slow burn romance that will captivate you from the start and that ending! OMG! I cannot wait for the next book! Liam and Samantha’s story was angst-filed, steamy and emotional!

This is a taboo guardian and ward / age difference romance. Skip it if that kind of thing isn’t for you!
I was drawn to Sam and Liam even though I was prepared not to be. It’s hard not to feel at least sympathetic to this sheltered girl who has dealt with so much tragedy and has mainly her music as a focus in life. Her intense, grumpy guardian Liam, is fighting with a ton of internal conflict, much of which about Sam and the circumstances that brought her to him.
I did struggle a lot with some of the vague allusions to things that had happened and that the characters were struggling with. I was left wanting more concrete discussion when it came to Sam’s past, the security firm and what was going on at the school and with Cody. While relevant, the overarching and repetitive “I shouldn’t want this” became a bit exhaustive. Hoping to get more in the next one since this left on a bit of a cliffhanger!
