Such an intriguing read!
Nova is brought to the city of Sterling after tragedy strikes her family, leaving her father to adopt her cousin Asher. In Sterling, magic is brought to Nova’s attention.. something she’s never seen before.
Enter Princess Jade, heir to the Larkspur throne… of her mother will give it up that is.
Nova was by far my favorite character! She is such a bad ass and once kidnapped she does a pretty decent job of staying collected even though everyone wants a piece of her for their own gain. I seriously cannot wait to find out more about her and see what she will do.
I felt in the beginning that Jade was just a damsel in distress… with potential. A good portion of the story, I was annoyed with her. I do, however, look forward to her magic growing and seeing what she transforms in to!
Chael is one of those grey characters you know is going to play a huge part, but I currently do not like him. He is definitely a user, playing both girls, unsure if it’s 100% romantic on Nova’s end though… she seems too smart for that bs.
The book started out slowly, lacking a bit in detail and background information, but the trials and action scenes kept me hooked that I devoured the book in no time. I’m hoping the author explains a bit more in book 2, already queued up!
*Some violence and adult language
This was a super fun YA fantasy story filled with vivid descriptions and complex characters. I really enjoyed reading a fantasy from two female perspectives and seeing how their stories intertwined.

I like Nova as a character. She’s strong and fearless, and she’s got a wonderful horse, River. She also has some magical powers that she’s been ignorant of. Jade is paler as a character, but since we get both hers and Novas point of view I still get to know her a bit. Chael… I’m not sure what I think about him. He’s got his secrets and it’s easy to imagine him playing Nova and Jade against each other.
The setting is quite magical och the queen is so evil that I almost like her! Novas connection with all kinds of animals is awesome, but I’m not sure how I feel about the magic being hereditary. There are a lot of things still waiting to be revealed!
*I received a copy of this book from the author and promised to give a review.*
Brittney Joy is quickly becoming one of my favorite YA authors because her stories are so involved, interesting, have fantastic, well-developed characters (including the animals who add their own element to the story). Overruled was no exception (and I hear the sequel is coming soon!). I loved the dynamic between those in power and those in servitude–kind of like a tedious, fast-paced game of cat and mouse. Would definitely recommend for anyone (of any age!) who enjoys a thrilling fantasy with memorable characters (and that’s clean enough I’d let my kids read it).
