There’s a new badge in the land of crime fiction… and it’s pinned on a man who can stand tall alongside lawmen like Raylan Givens, Walt Longmire, and Jesse Stone. Sheriff Colt Harper lives by his own moral code. His relentless crusade against drug crimes in his rural Mississippi county infuriates a Memphis mobster who sends Hack, his cold-blooded assassin, to stop him. ATF Special Agent Molly … Agent Molly McDonough, looking to save her troubled career, follows Hack’s trail of corpses to Harper’s turf. The fates of Harper, McDonough and Hack collide in a bloody, brutal showdown for justice, redemption and survival that can only be fought outside the law.

This is a wonderful novel. Steamy and tough, Cole Harper is the real deal, a throwback neo-Western hero who gives Elmore Leonard’s Raylan Givens a run for his money. This is the start of a great series of tough guy mysteries that I will continue to read and follow. Don’t miss this one. Highly recommended.
Good book
I absolutely loved this book. The style is very easy to read and it was very quickly absorbing. I loved that it wasn’t so much a “whodunnit” but more of a “will they figure it out in time.” I have already added more of Mr Thompson’s book to my TBR and expect that they will be just as enjoyable.
Not quite what I anticipated… shades of Jack Reacher/Lee Child. Not a bad story, just left me expecting more.
Good read.
The book could have used a good proofreader.
Ok read. Hard to understand the protagonist’s motivation but not bad for a summer read
Interesting page turner.
Being a Mississippian I can appreciate a good hard nosed sheriff who operates on the edge.
Stopped reading. Didn’t care about the plot or shallow characters.
Great story, flows nicely from beginning to end with a few good twists and turns.
Very good read
This is the second in the series featuring East Mississippi sheriff Colt Harper, and it was a very satisfying follow-up to the opener. I’d recommend reading them in order to get the full backstory, but either way you’re in for a bunch of action and some twists and turns. The local description is excellent as well as the different voices in the story. Looking for more from Sheriff Harper and company.
Thompson is a fantastic writer. Hard to put it down.
Good characters and down to earth realistic story line, good chatacter relations
Gritty and authentic writing isn’t a lost art. Outside the Law will give you a sample of the old noire genre.
Thoroughly enjoyed this character. Look forward to more from this author.
Disappointed ending, some areas a bit of a stretch for police work reality, overall a pleasant read.
