Laura’s life is turned upside down when she and her parents are in a car crash that kills her parents and leaves her for dead. It turns out that it wasn’t an accident but a crime of hate and a warning to those that are investigating their group. To keep her safe her brother who works for the FBI and one of the investigators targeted sends her to a friend for safe keeping. Nick’s marriage to Laura starts the beginning of their journey. What starts out as a marriage in name only turns into so much ore. This romantic suspense thriller will keep you on the edge of your seats from start to finish. I voluntarily agreed to receive an Arc of this book for an honest review.
Outrunning the Devil: A tale of mystery and suspense (Secret Haven Book 1) by author S. K. Brown has likable characters, suspense, and romance. The book starts out extremely interesting as Laura Adams regains consciousness lying face down in the snow. Her body is wracked with pain as she begins to try and move her body in the darkness. She lifts her head and sees the large hulking image of the family car with one single headlight weakly illuminating two bodies lying very still on the hillside. Her mother and father had also been ejected from the car upon the impact.
I won’t post spoilers, but the beginning of this book is where the mystery starts. Once Laura is released from the hospital and goes into hiding, the focus of the book is on her recovery and a possible attraction between Laura and Nick. Too much of the conversations deal with Laura being constantly apologetic for imposing on Nick’s life and then in return Nick continues to try and reassure Laura that she is not disrupting his life. It gets to be too much! The next bit of mystery is in the last chapter of the book. I liked the story and it is very promising, but I wish it had more substance. Hopefully, the next book in the series will have more interesting scenes to accent these wonderful characters.

For me, this story had a lot of potential if it had spent more time on the FBI side of the story and less on the sister side. Shane is in the FBI and due to the case he is working on the deaths of family members working the case, he has to hide his sister to keep her safe. Laura is constantly treated like a child, and as such seems to act like one. I know that went through a traumatic event, but I just could not relate with her at all. The story with her and Nick is so slow that I found myself skipping through. I found myself struggling to finish this.
He thought he killed them, all of them, but one still lives. After what was thought to be a freak accident turns into a homicide investigation, Laura Adams must die, but only on paper. Her brother an FBI agent, places her with his friend Nick Kasanovic. Nick agrees to marry Laura, in name only, to provide her with a new name and protect her from the unknown person who wants to finish the job. Nick is aware that Laura is an innocent, but he feels the electricity between them. As Laura recovers from her injuries, she worries that she is keeping Nick from living his own life. Will he finally let Laura know that she is everything he wants in a wife and lover? Evil has far reaching tentacles, will she every be safe? *The beginning of the book, 4 stars, but the rest of the book no more than 3 stars. I didn’t realize their story would be continued in the next book, so that was disappointing. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Laura and her parents were in a horrific car accident where they were all thrown from the car. Her parents died but she survived. Bearly. What appeared to be an accident was really the actions of a hate group getting back at the FBI for investigating them. As a message for the FBI to back off, the group was killing the families of the members on the task force. Each fatality looked like an accident so it took some time for the FBI to realize they actually weren’t accidents, but setups by the hate group. Laura’s brother, Shane, was on the FBI task force so his family’s accident was among the setups. Since the group thought Laura had died in the crash, Shane was able to fake her death and get her away to stay with an old buddy (Nick) in remote Anacortes, WA. The best way to keep Laura safe was for her to change her name – by marrying Nick. The marriage was to be in name only but the more time they spent together the more they came to care for each other, neither wanting the marriage to end.
The vivid descriptions of the area made it easy to picture the beautiful countryside. Even after going through such a horrible accident, Laura was determined not to be a burden on Nick. She constantly tried to make his life easier, by whipping up delicious meals or helping with his commercial fishing business. Even if that put her health at risk. Nick was a wonderful man. What began as him repaying a debt changed into being thankful Laura came into his life.
This is a story of courage, hope, and love. It had a HEA but left a mystery that will have you wanting to grab the next book.
