Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.
Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

A unique look at history with great characters and an exciting story line.
The first Outlander book introduces us to Clare and Jaimie, one of my favorite fictional couples ever!
This story grabbed me hook, line and sinker!! I love time-travel and historical fiction. Page after page I fell in love with Jamie and Claire’s story and have read every book in the series.
The show is great and remarkably true to the books; the exquisitely written books are still better.
I read this whole series, but none of the books compares to this one. I’ve read it a few times, and it was the impetus for my first trip (of many) to Scotland. As Gabaldon wrote subsequent novels in the series, she seemed to drag things out to the point where I don’t have any interest in reading any more of the books. However, this one remains one …
I really enjoyed the plot and the character development. It involves time-travel but not in the way you might think. A doctor winds up back in 18th century Scotland. I loved the history. It almost felt like you were there experiencing it. This book started me on an adventure–reading all the books in the series.
Romance, fantasy, history, adventure – all packed into this page turner. I really enjoyed it.
Love this book series. A good sci-fi story with sexy characters, adventure, and romance. Almost enough to make me want to touch every large rock structure to try to travel back in time.
If you have not read the “Outlander” series, you are missing out on what I believe is an excellent body of work!!! You must read all the books to appreciate the awesomeness of the author’s writing. Watching the television series, doesn’t do the books justice.
I have read the entire series. Great books for the story lines as well as mostly historically accurate.
All 7 books is quite a feat but you can’t stop. (Also wanted to keep ahead of the cable series) Books are more involved. Loved the characters, or hated them in some instances. Highly recommend, historical, love story, beautiful! Covers a wide spectrum of emotions.
This is the best book, and I’ve read a lot, that I have ever read! I’ve read the entire series twice and waiting for the next book. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.
If you read one Diana Gabaldon books…. you will want to read them all!
Loved it!
I found the Outlander Books completely entertaining and page turners. I loved the character development. The historical story moving from one local to another with original interest and action.
The beginning of an outstanding, original series. Introduces many of the characters and starts the storyline.
Loved it!
Loved it.
I was interested in this book because I saw ads on tv for the series. I got through more than halfway through the 800+ pages and then found I just was not picking it up to read. So I decided to quit and find something that would be hold my attention.
I have a love of fictional historical novels, and this book is amazing. The characters are original and interesting. The story line is unique. The author’s writing is sharp and clear, and keeps you fascinated. I learned some new words as well. And, of course, there’s the hero, Jamie. I highly recommend this book if you love to read, savoring …
