Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.
Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

The best book I’ve ever read.
I could not put it down until I read all 8 books. When I have time, I’ll start again. I just love Jamie and Clare, the steamy love, the action and interaction , their faith and belief in one another. The time travel aspect, multiple times , plus the actual history involved in the story, made it worth reading . All the things I enjoy in a story.
Everyone and their moms should be reading this book
This is a wonderful love story with lots of historical details and information. It takes a little while to get into because of setting the stage so that you understand the time period. It was well worth the investment of time and once I got into the heart of the story it was hard to put down.
A big book, but a fantastic book! Hard to put down!
So many things I love about this book and Ms. Gabaldon’s entire series. Fans of the TV show should definitely spend time reading the books as they have so much more to offer. I’ve been a huge fan of hers since this book was first published in 1991.
I found myself quickly caught up in the storyline and enjoyed the book thoroughly. Well written book which developed the relationship between the main characters and made them all come alive for me.
I was so scared to write this review; you have no idea! I postponed it for so long, but today is the time I do it. A side of me was afraid that the review I’m about to write wouldn’t live up to the book itself. This 800-page dictionary has been one of the most touching, emotional and action-packed books I have ever read in my life, and even if it …

An incredible beginning to one of my favorite sagas. Diana Gabaldon is a brilliant writer of historical fiction. Must read!
The Outlander novels were hard to put down. This author does her research well and I hope she will entertain us with more historical novels.
Loved the adventure and lots of romance
For anybody that hasn’t read OUTLANDER – and really, is there anybody that hasn’t – I highly recommend this outstanding book. Diana Gabaldon’s ability to pull you into the story awesome. You’re in Scotland with Claire from the first page until the last of the 627 pages, then like a child racing to get back in line for another thrilling ride on the …
This beginning book of the Outlander series got me reading again after many years. Wonderful.
Loved this book. Loved the characters and the story.
Outlander is outstanding! The introduction to Jamie and Clare. These two souls were meant to be together, despite the fact she was born 200 years after him! Their bond grows through this book and carries on through the next book, and the next… The look into what Scotland was like just before the 2nd Jacobite rising is fascinating. It takes a …
