One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS’s The Great American Read!
Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.
Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

I loved this book and evidently have so many others. I enjoyed the scenes of Clare wanting to return to her own time but slowly realizing that she is falling in love with Jamie, an 18th Century warrior.
Absolutely romantic and catching
Hands down the best series I’ve ever read. Can’t wait for book 9!
what a journey. it has been LONG time since I read the series but the characters and their stories reside in my memory. I know they made a series and although t is good… it pales when comparing it to the book!
This book has all the action, violence, heroism, villainy, and sex of the “Game of Thrones” books without making me keeping track of a cast of thousands, and it has all the romance of the “50 Shades” books with a much more exciting plot, good writing, and interesting, complex characters. If you’re looking for a little escapist fiction, this is a …
Love this book.
Couldn’t wait to finish each book (I believe there are seven). Loved the series.
It was well researched and well written. The main characters were really likeable and I learned a lot about social conditions in Scotland at the time.
I read Outlander when it was first published in 1991. I thought it was one of the most powerfully emotional books I’d ever read. In fact, I had to put it down and walk away several times because I was too invested in Jamie and Claire.
I’ve read all the books in the series and they were good books with good stories and good characters, but the …
Diana definitely won her $1 bet on this one. I think I’ve read it about 5 times since I have lent it out. Had to buy a digital copy since the paper one is losing binding. Still holding out for book 9…
Excellent first book in the series. Strangely even though I am not particularly interested in time travelling once I suspended logic I went along for the ride.
The world in which Claire lives is very different to the world into which she suddenly arrives. Claire has to use her substantial intelligence in order to survive. Her main goal is to …
Outlander was the first time travel romance I’d ever read, and it captured my imagination like no other story. I read the books in the series one after the other, laughing, crying, and worrying with the characters. Jamie and Claire are two of the most likable and memorable characters in modern-day literature, and I hope their adventures go on and …
This book and the rest of the series put out thus far has kept me entertained hour after many hours and in another world, myself loving the characters. The situations they often encounter and often create for themselves are so beyond amusing that it’s hard to believe all this story has come out of the pen and mind of one very talented author. Yes, …
This is the first book in one of my favorite series and I’ve recommended it to several friends, who love it as much as I do. The characters are complex and amazing and the plot is original and, as implausible is it seems, believable.
I sincerely hope the Outlander series is on the 100 greatest reading list. It was an epic account of the life & times of the Scottish Clans & English History. I was irrevocably drawn in & found it hard to put down. Each character was masterfully introduced into the storyline & kept me at the edge of my seat. I can hardly wait to read what Diana …
The best book ever.
This is the first in the Outlander series. All are excellent albiet long… very long. Read them and then get the DVDs. You will fall in love with Jamie and Claire. I have read all eight and started all over again. Love these books.
Love this whole series.
I loved every minute of it. I’m reading all of them in order and I am going on the eighth book now. Will be sorry when I get to the end of the series.
Outlander is my all-time-favorite novel. Hands down. It really has it all, including a time-travel twist.
