One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS’s The Great American Read!
Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.
Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

One of my favorite series on the planet! Diana Gabaldon is the most amazing story teller, with words that are rich in history, fantasy, great depth of characters, and vividly written in a way that reals a movie in your head! While yes there is a tv series on stars that does an incredible job of presenting these stories, Nothing compares to these …
This book inspired my writing and my love of time-travel novels!
I read this when it first came out and it remains my favorite book of all time. Incredibly researched, original, and beautifully written, the story draws you in and makes you feel as if you are part of it. Jamie is the perfect man!
This book is one of the best historical romances ever written, period. Realistic characters, fascinating history, intrigue, deception, seriously hot sex…it really has it all. If you never read beyond this novel, you’ll be thrilled. The rest of the series is wonderful to about Book 6. Things get kinda weird then, and I stopped reading. But this …
Absolutely , positively the best book series I have ever read! Sometimes an author can lift characters right off the pages where you can see them living and breathing right next to you. You see what they see and feel what they feel. The books are long and intense with some humor woven within. A truly wonderful read
Packed with action, adventure, romance, and wonderful characters that travel back and forth in time. A hard book to put down.
The phenom that began a legacy. I’ve only read it 4 times. It is an epic story to last throughout the years and should be treasured as a great read!
I can’t believe it has taken me so long to read this book. I thought I would wait until the excitement surrounding the story died down. Well, not only did the buzz not die down, it grew louder and stronger, and rightly so. Gabaldon’s writing style is captivating. Her character development and world-building are everything I had hoped for and more. …
Book Review by Pauline Reid Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
What This Book Is About?
We start in Inverness, 1946. It all started when Claire heard noises through some stones that looked like a mini stone henge, you know, haphazardly in a circle, stones, like standing upright rocks. Claire couldn’t make it out, she heard screaming, very life …
Oh my gosh where do I begin with this book. Awesome! That’s it. I do not need to tell anyone to go read the book, as I’m sure you all have heard of the series and the tv show. I must confess, I had to watch the show first, in order to relate the characters from the book in my head.
From there on out, the book flowed for me. Now I’m ready to read …
Most overrated book of all time , trash can of unrelated word piles nothing more
One of the best books I have ever read. The plot is outstanding . The characters are original. If you read it you will be looking for volume two as soon as you finish this one. Get ready for a “Grab you” and suck you in. I couldn’t stop reading until I finished volume eight. I wish Diana would write a sequel. I’m ready.
I loved this book!
Wow! I was one of those who caught up with the show and then decided I had to read the book. I’m so glad I did. My friend has been trying to talk me into it for the past year or so and I was always like “meh, sounds ok. I don’t know”. I wish I had read it sooner! I got lucky and found a steal on Facebook Marketplace. A lady was selling the first …
This is the only series of books (there are eight so far) that I have read more than once. In fact, I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve cycled through this amazing series of novels by Diana Gabaldon. The world of Jamie and Claire is so vivid and intricate that reading some of these lengthy books is like diving into an entirely separate …
Reread this for the first time in years and immediately found myself immersed in the story once again. The one that started me on the path to writing time travel romance! If you know the TV show, be sure to read the book! Great fun and very moving.
I’m probably the only person in the world that did not enjoy Outlander, but it fell flat for me. I love the premise, but I thought the author could have done so much more with it, such as focusing on the historical aspects and weaving a romance through it. Instead it is a romance with superficial historical accents woven through. Just my …
I have read this book numerous times. I like history, this book is loaded with it. I am in love with the lead character and her charming husband. I adore the relationship these two have with each other. Older book and well worth reading.
I enjoyed this book while on a trip to Scotland, and loved seeing the landscapes and towns that inspired the author. While I deeply admired her imagination and sense of history, I’m unsure whether I’ll pick up the next installments in the series. So many books and so little time!
Detailed descriptions of period and place and vivid character development made this story resonate. Although the movies were good, there is so much more in the written word.
