Her New York Times bestselling Outlander novels have earned the praise of critics and captured the hearts of millions of fans. Here is the story that started it all, introducing two remarkable characters, Claire … two remarkable characters, Claire Beauchamp Randall and Jamie Fraser, in a spellbinding novel of passion and history that combines exhilarating adventure with a love story for the ages.
One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS’s The Great American Read!
Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.
Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

Once you start reading it you won’t be able to stop.
Very interesting concept and entertaining.
What does anyone need to say?!
Wonderful reading!
One of my favorite series ever!
Barely avoids being a bodice ripper, but with succeeding books in the series, historicity takes over and the interaction of characters becomes more realistic and less period dress fiction.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the staying power of Gabaldon and did not finish the series. I read at least three of them, and enjoyed witnessing Gabaldon …
This was such a unique and original novel. I loved the characters and the way history came alive. I certainly would not like to go back in time. Claire faces so many interesting challenges in the past. Loved the story and glad it was made into a series.
This is my favorite book. I have read it several times.
A winner!
Wonderful wonderful wonderful. Who really doesn’t love this series of books? Just need more books and more of the movies too.
Rich, wonderful characters. I fell in love with Claire from the start, and her slow-build romance with Jaime was truly fantastic to read. Loved the history and the setting. I highly recommend this book.
I fell in love with Jamie and Claire’s love. Jamie told Claire things that it feels like many men won’t confide. They grow together.
Wonderful book. Full of detail about the culture and setting where Jamie lives. Liked it so much I read the following books, too.
I read this book in 1992 or 1993 and became hooked by Dr. Gabaldon’s writing style. I appreciate the research she does about various facets of her characters lives and times. She only made one mistake in the first book and it was quickly corrected. Now, I’m anxiously awaiting book nine.
Awesome series! Can’t wait for the next one.
I have tried to read this book a dozen time and each time I keep getting stuck at around 200 pages. I think that this just isn’t the book for me, so I’m throwing in the towel.
The Outlander series are some of the most well written and engaging books I’ve read in a long time.
A captivating historical novel. Great characters!
The series is engaging (and long), and I think the books may be better than the TV series. However, the books are very long and heavy, so they can get quite difficult to read.
Absolutely incredible! Diana Gabaldon is amazing!
I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO EVERYBODY! JUST GREAT !!
