One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS’s The Great American Read!
Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.
Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

Absolutely fantastic
I read the book in 1991 when it first came out and the rest of the original series that followed. Couldn’t put it down and couldn’t wait for the next to come out!
Adventure, historical drama, romantic, action packed and simply amazing stories. The characters are electric and addictive. Never want this historical sci-fi to end.
I can’t say enough about this book and all of the other books in the Outlander series. The characters are so well written that you quickly grow to care for them. I love how Diana weaves historical facts into her stories too. I know some people don’t like how the female characters are treated but I view that as accurate to that time period. …
I’ve read all of her books 3 times over the past 30 years….I can’t wait for her next book to be released….
I’ve come late to the Outlander fan club but I am now an enthusiastic member. Well-written, well-researched and a fantastic story line. I finally understand what “all the fuss” is about!
characters are realistic and author has researched, knows history and has a fantastic imagination. Love her scienitific approach to story knowing you can do anything with the hoppthois of time travel. Great series but read the books FIRST. You will not be able to wait stop reading the series.
I read this book many years ago before electronic books were available. Have read the whole series and patiently (!) waiting for the next!!! This book starts the addiction, from there on out it just grabs you more and more. There are so many genres represented by this series they find it hard to put it in one category. I was first attracted to it …
Love the Outlander series!
I love the Outlander series. They are one of the few books that I have read more than once. History, tragedy, romance, adventure all wrapped in one! I highly recommend!
It’s got a bit of everything in this book. It’s an epic journey following Claire’s life.
I am an avid reader and Outlander is one of the best books I have ever read.
Great fun read!
Great read.
Amazing. Changed me.
I love the romance, the suspense and the characters. My favorite serirs begins here.
This series is one of my all time favorites. As is this author!
I am not a fan of romance fiction or of time travel, but the story woven by Diana Gabaldon makes you believe that what is happening is plausible. She did enough research for her book – and the whole Outlander series – to be called historical fiction, which made to book doubly fun to read. It is a thick book, so might only criticism is that you …
I read it and loved it before it was a Starz hit. I read it again a few years ago and am now reading the sequel, Dragonfly in Amber.
good story line but a lot of repeat information from earlier books
