One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS’s The Great American Read!
Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.
Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.
This eBook includes the full text of the novel plus the following additional content:

Read this book when it just came out. Was right away hooked. Bought all the additional volumes. Very informative about the time period. Loved the characters. Was a very original idea.
One of the best books I’ve read. Contains elements of all genres.
My mom has been reading those books for a while now. As I love to read, I decided I was going to give them a try. They are great. Diana Gabaldon builds a whole world around her characters, taking the time to do some great research to make sure it’s historically accurate. The books are full of historical and medical information. It makes you want …
Every couple years, I read her books over again. And again. They are wonderfully detailed and so much fun to read. And now that you know what everone looks like per the Starz series, they are worth reading one more time!
Diana Gabledon is a master storyteller and this is the first book in a very successful series of books that was eventually turned into a tv series.
This book was bought for me as a gift and I am sad to say it languished on a shelf for quite a while before I took it down. it was one of the those days when the weather is awful and I wanted nothing more than to curl up on the sofa with a good book – and was I in for a treat. I read the book through in one sitting, and loved it. The style, the …
I couldn’t put this book down! Wonderfully written, lovable characters and lot of action! I was bored at all. There are some disturbing parts towards the end, but it makes the book that much more worthwhile.
I’ve been watching the Starz series since the beginning, but strangely enough, never tried to read the book. Recently, I decided I better pick up the novel and give it a chance.
Usually, the rule seems to be if you watch a movie/show before reading the book, you like the movie/show better, and vice versa.
I can’t say that was the rule with this …
Outlander is a beautiful saga and although the story is told through many novels it is well worth the time invested. A must for true romantics as well as those who simply enjoy a well crafted story with wonderful and colorful characters. Classic.
I loved the time travel part and how the author stayed true to historical part of that time period. The main characters stay true just like in the other books. The whole series is great.
Have read all her books. Started reading them about three years ago and was able to binge through without waiting for next book. Have caught up and hate to wait for new books. Love all her book series.
I first read Outlander way back in 1994. Twenty-four years later, it’s still my #1 favorite romantic novel. Jamie is also still my #1 favorite romance hero, because he has all the traits I love in a man. Claire is a strong, intelligent heroine who adapts amazingly well to her new home in the past, and I very much admired her for it. Their …
I originally experienced this book many years ago, when I still used CDs to hear them. I was unsure of how good it would be because:1. I’m always afraid to be disappointed by a book people rave about; 2. I am a history buff and really despise books written by poorly educated authors and 3. A series of very lengthy books on one of my favorite …
Again, I’m late to the party. I avoided this book (even at the recommendation of many friends, all with totally different tastes) because I really didn’t think I would enjoy it. I’m not a huge fan of historical fiction and I’m really not a big fan of romance, therefore, why would I read this book? I’d hate it, right? WRONG. Oh-so-wrong. I …
I got into trouble with several of my coworkers were reading it during their lunch breaks. All I said was “Wait till you ger to the second book in the series…”
And I got the evil e.ye all nite…Seems my coworker.shad a BOOK CLUB….no one invited me. Mila told me it was for LADIES ONLY…and she did not have to buy a copy. Lucky for her. I …
Although quite a fantasy, it so much more than time travel, you will feel the texture of the fabric, smell the herbs Claire uses to heal, and taste the flavors of the foods, fascinating glimpse into life in the 17th century. Book is 900 pages and I did not want it to end.
I would recomend this whole series. A whole snow storms worth and more. Wonderful reading.
The question: “What book did you enjoy that took you out of your comfort zone?”
Answer: Outlander Series! I became an obsessed fan years ago before there was ever any talk about a movie or series for TV. I read the original BOOKS. I love this whole series, BUT there are some very uncomfortable scenes in all the books which are documented as …
I LOVED this book and all the other books in the series. I’ve read them all 3 times and several of them more than that. Diana Gabaldon is an amazing author who brings her characters to life in such a way that you feel you are in the story with them. This was a wonderful book.
I read this book when it first came out, so years and years ago. It’s too long and too wordy, but the story of Jaime and Clare is timeless. As is her journey through the stones to 1700s Scotland. Those who are only watching the Starz version are missing a whole lot. By the time she got the Dragonfly in Amber, book two, she got better at limiting …
