One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS’s The Great American Read!
Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.
Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.
This eBook includes the full text of the novel plus the following additional content:

Great series both on television and books.
The best time travel book ever!!
I really enjoyed this adventure
I didn’t stop reading until I had read the whole series. I loved that time travel was explained very convincingly, and settings were so real to me that I felt like one of the family.
I read this when it first came out and was filled under romance. While there is a great romance and some steamy sex, I see it as much more adventure. An English nurse from WWII steps through a circle of standing stones and ends up in 18th century Scotland.
Set aside the time to allow yourself the time to fall in love with this series. Because you will.
Love it!
Best series ever!
I absolutely enjoyed Outlander (Book 1). I enjoyed the writing and the attention to detail the author gives us. This detail made the story and scenery come to life in my mind. I can understand Claire’s reactions and thought process during her journey. Jaime is amazing and a multidimensional leading man. Some of the rape encounters were a bit …
This time travel book is my favorite book series. Also watch the tv show onsStarz channel or DVD. Great love story over years and time. Great characters. Never dull. Yes does have graphic sex/abuse at times but is all character building.
Ive read all of the books but had a hard time with the war scenes.
Loved the honorable way the Jamie is and the intense love.
I hesitated to begin what I knew to be a series, but once in, I WAS HOOKED! I love the characters, the writing style, the plot line. It is a GREAT book read!
This book (and the entire series) is one of my favorites! It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the plot and the characters are engaging and memorable.
Love this book series. Diana Gabeldon is an amazing author
This is one of the books I read and reread because I was so in love with Jamie and Claire!
I read this book years ago and then recently re-read it when the TV series came out. I fell in love with the characters once more. This is one of my favorites!
Loved this entire series
I loved, loved, loved this series. It took me 9 months to read the whole series since I could only read a little each night, but the best read EVER!!! I learned so much. I laughed and cried and fell in love with the characters. This is now one of my favorite authors. Wonderful.
Just couldn’t get into it. Have also seen the TV shows, and still “meh”, which is unusual as I am an avid romance reader. What got me most is her refusal to work in the time period and to get what she wanted. Did she not know history?
Watched the series on TV. Loved it, had to get the book to soak it all in again. Now on to book 2.
