One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS’s The Great American Read!
Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.
Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

If I could give this book six stars I would! This is a book that inspired me to write. I loved the historical research that went into writing this. I remember the author saying she wrote it “for practice.” I was so impressed by that! I love epic stories, and this certainly delivers as it goes back and forth in time travel between centuries. The …
Claire, a nurse lives in the 1940’s and is transferred back in time by going through the standing stones in Scotland, and ends p in the 1500s. She experiences many adventures as she adjusts to her new life. A great story and very memorable.
Best series ever!
This book stuck with me. I still remember reading it when it was first published and reread it many years later when I discovered it was part of a series. I read the entire series over 9 months.
I “DESPISED” romance novels until I read this book. This lovely mix of history, romance and supernatural time-travel pulled me in and kept me waiting for the next in the series for at least a decade. I still enjoy books (and shows) set in Diana Gabaldon’s universe and this one started it all.
My favourite book of all time! I can’t get enough of the story and the depth of the characters as well as the description of Scotland. Makes me long to go back for a visit!
Fabulous. Anyone interested in historical Scotland will love the history. Has a great premise and characters. In a class by itself.
Wowowowow!
I have read the entire series. Great time travel books!
I loved the idea of a time traveler with medical knowledge and the tribulations that are caused by that. The characters are developed well.
I don’t think I read a book as phenomenal as this since The Thorn Birds. The story is riveting and the characters reach out through the pages to pull you in. There are passion and history and such a story of love, one that I have not read in a long time.
LOVE this series. I rarely reread a book but this one I have. I love the characters, the setting, the romance and lust, the thrill, the friendships and the tragedies. Despite the wee bit of science fiction, this is romantic historical fiction at its best.
Wonderful series. I have read multiple times.
What can I say? My favorite author. Been reading (and re-reading) since 1993. Re-read this book at least once a year.
I love the Outlander series of books, but my favorite is Outlander. I have read it several times. There’s just something special about the characters Jamie and Claire that keeps me coming back.
Ignore the tv series for a while and read the books first. I have read this one at least four times. Can’t praise it enough!
Wonderful!
Could not put it down!
Amazing book. Totally different from anything read previously, it’s own genre!!!
This is one of my most favorite books I’ve ever read. It is part of a series of books. This and Voyager are my favorites. They are my comfort rereads.
