One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS’s The Great American Read!
Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.
Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

Inspiring!
I was a fan of Diana Gabaldon ‘s Outlander LONG before it was “a thing.” Way back in my twenties, before my own writing career had even begun, I was totally captivated by the storyline, vivid characters, and slow-build, complicated, nuanced and lovely romance that develops between Jamie and Claire in Outlander.
Whenever I needed an …
You all know I am a disciple of the Gabaldon. This series is one of my all-time favorites! Her storytelling skills are wonderful, she has created a world I want to revisit time and again, and oh yeah, big tall redheaded Scottish warriors named Jamie Fraser do it for me… It’s always nice to slip back into my favorite characters’ lives—makes me feel …
World-building, world-building, world-building!
Did I mention world-building?
Bar none, I’ve never been so enraptured and pulled into the past by a book! Without a doubt, Ms. Gabaldon did her homework.
The great thing about Outlander being a time-travel romance is that not only did I get to experience the past with the chivalrous hero — which …
My very favorite, go-to book series. I’m currently reading it for the 24th time. It’s an emotional roller coaster. The TV series is grand, but the books are so much …. more!
I laughed, I sighed, I ugly cried. Jamie and Claire put me through the wringer, and I loved it. The series on Starz is great, but the book is even better!
This is honestly one of the best universes that I’ve read in a long time. The Scottish Hishlands, the fighting, the intrigue are all so well written you truly feel like you are there. Jamie and Claire are so stubborn and so wonderful. You won’t be disappointed to start this series.
I love, love, love this book, it has it all, history, romance and time travel. Seriously it is fantastic. The characters are believable and I could not stop reading. It begins in 1945 where Claire and Frank Randall are reconnecting with a second honeymoon in Scotland. From there we have standing stones, falling back through time to 1743, …
In late 2015, I saw a book in Barnes and Noble (Written in my Own Heart’s Blood) by Diana Gabaldon and thought “This sounds amazing.” I picked it up (and it was nearly 1000 pages in harcover) and suddenly realized it was the most recent book in a series with books that were all practically a thousand pages long. I can’t read a series book without …
Outlander is the first installment in author Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander Series. Outlander is an epic story of a consuming romance that is very rich in history. It also offers a bit of mystery, a slight magical/fantasy element, and much more action and adventure than I expected, which I loved.
The character and world development in this book are …
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, just like everyone else! It’s a must read.
I am not much into time traveler romance. I have hardly read any. So I was still skeptical when I started reading this book. I only picked it up because of its popularity. But I am so glad about my decision after reading it. It is one of the finest romance stories I have read. Though I was unfamiliar with the setting of Scottish revolution, it …
The thing I love about this book and series is how it’s not confined to one genre. It is a historical fiction. It’s historical romance. It’s an action and adventure story. It has drama and suspense. Not to mention such detail to the time, setting and history. It’s the thing that I admire most about this book and it’s subsequent installments. It …
SO I’m finally watching the TV version of Outlander (I confess, I haven’t read the book yet) and it’s very fun and I have some questions:
1. So far Jamie seems to be the only attractive and nice man in Scotland in the 1700s, does that continue?
2. Where is Claire getting all her amazing perfectly tailored dresses and cozy looking scarves? Does …
Outlander has to be the most original book and series ever written, Diana’s research is second to none, and it contains the most haunting love story ever written, and inspiring.
This was not a book I had great hopes for, but it was on sale for $1.99 so I figured I would try it. I was immediately absorbed by the plot. Eight books and thousands of pages later I am still swept away! The “time travel” aspect, which could have been so hokey was great. The history is amazingly accurate and the love story is wonderful!
The first time I read this book was 1992 and when I finished it, I immediately took it to the post office and mailed it to my daughter. Thus began a 25 year love affair with the saga of Jamie and Claire Fraser. Many hours have been spent in reading the subsequent books, many conversations, much research of the times and places, and more …
My sister-in-law gave me Outlander to read probably 12 years ago. I was immediately hooked and read all the sequels that were available at that time. Then, like every other Diana Gabaldon fan, we waited on baited breath for the next installment. This is probably the most amazing series of books I have ever read. The Starz version of it does it NO …
Again…my absolute favorite author and series. Jamie and Claire are the main characters of this 8 book series (and now a TV series) they are the most wonderfully written two people I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. I say people because that’s how Diana Gabeldon writes them. They become real, they become friends. The “most uncomfortable” …
I can’t believe I hadn’t read this before now! It is so good! It is sort of a historical romance with a tinge of paranormal but more than that. It is an epic story of a youngish (27 yr old) woman who gets swept through time and into the time of her life! It is hard to put down. I highly recommend this book!
I started watching the series on Netflix and became hooked on the story immediately. So naturally I subscribed to Starz to watch what’s not on Netflix and once I caught up on the series I jumped in and started reading the books. I need to know what really happened and I need to know what’s coming in season five and beyond. That’s just all there is …
