Now she spends her days working as a rural home health care nurse, making calls on a quirky roster of housebound characters she’s determined to take care of whether they cooperate or not.
She applies this same optimism to her love life, despite the fact that she’s been dating for 38 years without locating any husband material. When she runs into her childhood sweetheart, Henry Matthews, a wildlife ranger for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it looks like she might’ve found her man.
But Phoebe and Henry’s chance for romance has to be put on hold while they undertake a desperate search for a young woman who mysteriously vanished from the park during a gathering of world famous biologists and botanists, including a charismatic Frog Whisperer.
Out on a Limb is a mystery that takes place in the same Smoky Mountain world as her three national bestsellers Heart in the Right Place, Medicine Men, and Bear in the Back Seat.

I really liked this mystery. The setting was great…Everyone who follows my reviews for a while knows that I love the outdoors and this just hit the spot. I enjoyed the peek into a rangers life and also the scientific information that was shared on the botanical aspect of the Smokey mountains. I didn’t think it was too much or too boring.

Love reading books set in a familiar area
I read this in one day & went to Amazon to buy her next book!
Since I love the Smoky Mountains, I enjoyed a novel that developed in those beautiful green hills and valleys. The heroine, a nurse, showed a great sense of humor and a character that was very human. It was very entertaining!
Great characters in an unusual mystery. Enjoyed reading it.
Fun Smokey Mountains mystery with a lot of science lessons thrown in.
Out on a Limb
A Smoky Mountain Mystery
By: Carolyn Jourdan
Narrated by: Jodi Gaylord
Give me a story that is full of twists and turns and I am a happy listener. Carolyn Jourdan’s Out On a Limb is full of them! It starts with a woman climbing a tree in a national park when someone tries to shoot her down. Definitely caught me up from there, …
Informative as well as entertaining.
It was ok.
Wonderful read, loved every minute of it!
This was a great read. Impossible to put down. Highly recommended.
Interesting storyline but the pace was slow in spots.
A great story about middle aged women persevering. Exciting, too.
This was an interesting book in a locale that I love — the Smokey Mountains. The pacing of the story was great.
I read this book because the story was about the Appalachian mountains near where I live.
I seldom read fiction
It was OK but I didn’t find it particularly informative
I spend time every summer in this part of the country so I absolutely loved the characters and real-life knowledge about what goes on there. Very informative and I ended up wishing the book had been twice as long and/or that we would get a sequel that follows the same character lines. I wanted to know all of their back stories, too!!! Definitely …
This is a fun read, especially because my original home is in Tennessee. It’s a good mystery plot, with interesting characters and informative facts about the Great Smoky Mountains. The writer does the Appalachian dialogue well. I definitely recommend it.
