Fun , exciting book hard to put down and good cast of characters . can’t wait to read more books by this author !
This is a romantic suspense book and a western, all in between the pages of a compelling book. It is the story of Kate Jackson who raised her two daughters alone after a terrible explosion on an oil rig took the life of her husband Danny. Kate has always believed that Danny is still alive, but she is trying to move on with her life, even getting engaged to a new man, Collin Matthews. Setting off on an engagement trip to Montana seems adventurous until their SUV breaks down and Kate finds a man named Jon Harper working in a wood shop and is stunned at how much he reminds her of Danny. The story is fast-paced with wonderful descriptions of the Montana scenery and charismatic characters. This is my first ever B.J. Daniels book and I hope to read more in the future. I was excited to find out that there is a second book coming out in March and I hope that Earl Ray and Bessie figure prominently in it, too. Fans of romantic suspense will be enthralled by the story of Kate and Jon and their story of danger and life or death situations.

I purchased a copy of this book via the Brenda Novak Book Box subscription program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.
Out of the Storm by BJ Daniels is about second chances and moving on. Kate Jackson is finally ready to move on after losing her husband 20yrs earlier, but then she sees Jon Harper and she KNOWS he is her husband. The one who everyone said was dead but she KNEW he wasn’t. She’d said that he had lost his memory but no none else believed that so she’d moved on with life, at least to a point. Jon doesn’t believe his is Kate’s long lost husband. But he does believe the man she’s agreed to marry isn’t the right man for her.
Out of the Storm follows as these two scared people find their way. It explores the idea do we love someone because of what they are or who they are. Would you fall in love again if you meet your true love in a different life? It’s a very touching story. The idea of Jon being so much like her husband that she believes he is her husband. That true love finds a way, even if years go by. I found the story to be engaging and it kept me quickly turning the pages as it were (I read this on my kindle so swiping the pages). But I was left with a few questions. And doubts. I felt the ending was a little to tidy. This is the beginning to a new series set in Buckhorn, Montana and I’ll be one of the first to read the next story. But I’m wondering if Ms. Daniels will revisit these characters or if we are done with this story. I guess I wanted an epilogue. The ending left me wanting more. Fans of Ms. Daniels already know she writes characters that feel like real people, characters that you can easily connect with. Even the bad guys have moments when you feel for them. The story is fast paced and emotional. The setting is realistic and honestly makes me want to go find Buckhorn, Montana and visit for a while. This is one of those stories that I will be thinking about for days, maybe even months to come. I highly recommend you pick up OUT OF THE STORM by BJ Daniels today and find out for yourself how great this story is. You’ll be eager for book 2 too!
Out of the Storm is the first book in the Buckhorn, Montana series.
Kate has been a widow for twenty years. Her husband, Danny, was reported killed in an oil refinery explosion. His body was never identified among the remains of workers who were burned beyond recognition. She raised her two daughters alone, but she never lost hope that she would find Danny some day.
Collin has been trying to convince Kate to marry him. Finally she agrees and removes the wedding band that Danny placed on her finger so many years ago and allows Collin to place an engagement ring on her finger.
When Collin convinces Kate to go on an ‘engagement trip’ with him, they become stranded in the small town of Buckhorn, Montana during a snow storm. The more time Kate spends with Collin, the more she begins to doubt him and their relationship.
Jon Harper, a carpenter living and working in Buckhorn, bears a striking resemblance to Kate’s dead husband. Kate is convinced he is her long lost Danny even though Jon swears that they have never met.
Out of the Storm is a fast-paced novel that pulls the reader in from the first chapter. Hold on tight for this wild ride. I was so engrossed in this book that I read until well past the time I should have been sleeping. I couldn’t put it down. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves romantic suspense novels.
Out of the Storm is the first book I’ve read by B. J. Daniels but it won’t be the last. The story is a great start to the Buckhorn, Montana series with lots of tension, suspense, and edge-of-the-seat action. And add some romance to the mix and readers who enjoy the suspense-romance genre will not want to miss this one. The characters are strong, realistic and likable (well, the good guys, anyway!). I’m eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series. I listened to a library copy of the audiobook and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own. Corey Snow did a good job narrating the book which made for an enjoyable listening experience.
This is the first book I have read by B. J. Daniels but definitely not my last. I bought this book as part of the Brenda Novak 2021 Reading Challenge/Book Club. Imagine seeing a ghost, a living ghost, of your husband that supposedly died in an explosion twenty years ago. While on a surprise engagement trip, Katie’s now fiance, Collin, promised her during this trip she would get to make a snow angel. Something he heard her talk about. Unbeknowst to Katie, Collin had ulterior motives for this trip. When their rental vehicle breaks down in Buckhorn, Montana, Katie gets the surprise of her life. He did not look like her Daniel, but when Katie first sees Jon, she fainted. She knew she had just looked into her dead husband’s eyes. Jon does not believe her, and Collin is mad. His plan is not working out the way he wanted. There is second chance love, suspense, and action in this book. Cannot wait to read “From the Shadows”, the second book in the Buckhorn, Montana, series.
What a great book! To say it is a romance would defiantly be accurate. To say it is a suspense would be accurate. To say it is a page turner is also accurate! Do I have your attention? I sure hope so because this book has everything that makes a fantastic book. It just seems so wrong that I can only give it five stars because it deserves so much more! Does it have the happy ending that you want every book to have, you will just have to read it for yourself to find out what is between the pages. You won’t be sorry! Thank you for writing such a great book B.J.
This is a new to me author and I will be reading more of her books for sure. This book was easy to read (by that I mean the flow of the book), it was a good suspense/romance. Well done!
I read this book for several reasons. One, it was a NetGalley book for me to review and second it is on my Brenda Novak book club review list for January. I love reading B.J. Daniels as her stories take me to places I have never been and am not sure I will ever get to. She brings in characters that keep you interested in their lives and takes you through the twists and turns of what happens to normal everyday people. She introduces the characters and not only explains their role in the story but she gives you a short background so you come to care about them.
In this story we see the widow Kate Jackson who lost her husband twenty years ago taking a engagement trip with her new fiance Collin. She has dated him for awhile and though she has had doubts she has accepted his proposal. Can she go through with it though? When their car breaks down she see someone who so reminds her of her late husband and the love of her life that there are questions and concerns about the true relationship between her and Collin. He tries to convince her that there is no way that this man could or would be her deceased husband even though he knows she was young and he was her first love then they were in their teens.
But, he is not trying to get her away only because he wants her to marry him. He has nefarious reasons that she is a part of even though she is unaware of these turns of events…and what about the man she thinks is her true love Danny.
You will love reading this story and all the comings and goings of a small town in Buckhorn, Montana and like me may want to visit all the places and people of the town.
Out of the Storm (Buckhorn, Montana #1) was a great read by B.J. Daniels. Twenty years ago, Kate’s husband, Daniel, was declared dead in a refinery explosion. Kate never gave up hope and believed he was out there somewhere and suffering from amnesia. She is on a trip and finds herself in Buckhorn, Montana with her fiancé and knows in her heart that she sees Daniel. But the man she sees is Jon Harper. Jon is certain that he isn’t her Daniel but some of his memories are lost in shadows. I really loved reading Katie and Jon’s story and can’t wait to read more by B.J. Daniels.
Good start to the new series. It opens as Kate receives a proposal of marriage from the man she dated for the past six months. Although she accepts Collin’s ring, she can’t help having reservations. Twenty years earlier, Kate lost the love of her life, Danny, in a refinery explosion. His body was never identified, and she always believed that he was still alive, possibly suffering from amnesia. She still looks for his face wherever she goes, hoping that he’s alive. Despite those reservations, she accepts Collin’s proposal, prepared to finally move on with her life. When Collin springs a surprise engagement trip on her, she quickly loses her enthusiasm for the journey when they break down in the middle of a blizzard. Stranded in the tiny town of Buckhorn while they wait for parts, Kate is stunned when she spots Danny, even though he insists his name is Jon and he doesn’t know her.
Kate’s life suddenly becomes very complicated. On the one hand, she’s sure that Jon is Danny; she just needs to convince him of the fact. On the other hand, she has a fiancé who is not at all happy about this blast from Kate’s past. Kate doesn’t know that Collin has ulterior motives, both for their engagement and this trip. He won’t allow anything to interfere with his plans.
I enjoyed watching the relationship between Kate and Jon develop. She is dead sure that Jon is Danny and spends every possible minute she can with him, telling him stories of their life together, of their two daughters, and their lives since his disappearance. Jon enjoys hearing the stories, and though he wishes otherwise, he is sure that he isn’t Danny. He can’t tell her the truth about why but he can’t deny that he is drawn to her. After a couple of run-ins with Collin, Jon’s instincts tell him that the man is dangerous.
This is where the suspense of the story picks up the pace. Kate wants to stay in Buckhorn and spend more time with Jon, but Collin’s situation grows more perilous with each day. Desperate to get Kate away from Jon, Collin takes steps that could put a bulls-eye on Jon’s back. Meanwhile, Kate’s youngest daughter is taken hostage to ensure Kate’s cooperation. I liked how Kate kept her head and managed to warn Jon about his danger. Jon gets some unexpected help from his friend, Earl Ray, as he prepares to go after Kate and Collin. I was glued to the pages through the multiple twists until it was all over. The only thing to figure out was how Kate and Jon could be together. I wasn’t too surprised by the how, but the process was very complicated. I loved the ending.
I enjoyed the time spent in Buckhorn and look forward to future books in the series. I loved how the entire town got into the relationship between Jon and Kate. The scenes in the café with everyone crowded around the window were fun. My favorite character is Earl Ray, who initially appears to be just your run-of-the-mill mountain town resident. It doesn’t take long to discover that there is much more to him, and I can’t wait to learn more.
Out of the Storm will sweep you off of your feet. This intense, emotional story takes you on a journey filled with twists and turns that that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Kate and Jon are wonderful characters that have been separated by circumstances but, love finds a way when fate intervenes. This was an amazing start of a new series. I can’t wait to read the next book.
This is one of those that will do its best to tear you up and put you back together again. Cases of amnesia are funny things and they soon have us on pins and needles hoping for any glimmer. Kate does not give up because her heart knows. Daniel on the other hand is someone else named Jon. As we follow the two looking for answers, watching the shadows, seeing of they lift at some light. Danger also seeps from the shadows coming for her making him make a move. All the intrigue and it will uncover what and whom should be watched and who can be trusted. For the beginning of a new series we are given a humdinger as the old saying goes.
I just finished reading the first book in the Buckhorn, Montana series–OUT OF THE STORM by B.J. Daniels. As tired as I had gotten while reading, I found that I could not put this book down, From the creativity in the writing to the description of the areas, the engaging characters, and the plot, this is an emotional journey in the life of a single mom and her quest to move on, believing she had not lost her husband in a refinery accident twenty years ago. She finds love again, and it all goes south from there. She meets a man, falls in love, and he takes her on what I call the trip from hell, with the only bright light being a delay in Buckhorn and meeting a man there who unknowingly turns her life around and awakens in her, feelings that she had never been able to suppress. Kudos BJ!!!!!
The first book in the Buckhorn, Montana series, Out of the Storm packed a suspenseful punch with secrets, lies, kidnapping, betrayal, and layers of intrigue. The story follows Kate Jackson, a woman who lost her husband Danny in a work explosion. Though twenty years have passed, Kate never lost hope that Danny might be alive somewhere. Everyone told her to move on, but Kate couldn’t and solely focused on raising her daughters. Now, newly engaged and tentatively starting over with her fiancée Collin, Kate is stunned when she sees a man who looks exactly like Danny.
Jon knows that he is not Kate’s long-lost husband, but his past isn’t clear. What secrets is Jon hiding? And why is Collin so insistent that Jon is not Danny and that he and Kate must leave and cross the Canadian border? Jon might not remember all of his past, but he knows that he must do whatever it takes to protect this lovely woman from danger, even if it means revealing who he is.
I really enjoyed this action-packed, emotion-filled romance. The characters are well-developed, especially Kate, who is a devoted mother, a successful writer, and a strong woman. Kate loves her husband, and her unfailing loyalty and devotion to him are powerful. She loved Danny with everything she had, so when she sees a man that she thinks is Danny, you can imagine the reaction.
Dealing with her conflicting emotions about living in the past or looking toward the future, as well as finding out the true motivations of someone close to her, proves difficult and dangerous. Kate is so torn between her love for her first husband and her future with Collin, especially because she feels deep down that Danny is still alive.
The secondary characters are well-layered too. Jon, the quiet and solitary woodworker who might be Danny, is intriguing, and I was fascinated by his story. Several locals prove loyal and indispensable to Jon’s cause, and I’m eager to see some of these hard-working and helpful people of Buckhorn, Montana in future books in the series.
There are many twists and turns in Out of the Storm, which makes for a gripping and intriguing read. Plus, the love story is fantastic! I highly recommend this novel to readers who enjoy contemporary romantic suspense with great characters. Thanks so much to Netgalley, Harlequin, and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Thrilling suspense rocks this soulmates love story!
Kate allows herself to be swept along by her attentive new fiancé as he takes her on an ill-fated road trip through Montana in winter. A random stop waylays their plans when she happens upon a man who is a dead ringer for her late husband. Thus starts a chain of events that quickly spirals out of control, unearthing secrets galore and culminating in an explosive fight to survive.
Every page of this book kept me hanging on the edge of my seat. So many twists and turns, so many surprises! The bad guy is about as evil as they come when judging by his actions, yet the author manages to imbue him with a surprising amount of sympathy and compassion. Justice is served in the end, yet one still can’t help feeling sad that it had to work out that way.
Kate does find the love story she’s been longing for, and rest assured that all the loose ends and nagging questions are wrapped up nicely. The writing is deeply moving, insightful, and gripping throughout the story. The romance builds gradually but the strength of their hearts is evident from the start in both the main characters. The HEA is well worth the wait.
The author clearly intends to visit this Buckhorn community again as we’re introduced to a wide variety of locals whose intertwined lives leave us with plenty of questions for future books. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
This book was quite honestly everything I expected and more. I felt that the author did an incredible job of crafting a storyline that kept you eagerly turning pages and feeling completely emotionally invested in the outcome of it all. My heart received quite the workout as this angsty, suspenseful, emotional and dramatic read pummeled it with waves of loss, hope, twists, action and danger. If you enjoy a meatier book that also provides a richness of feels you’re going to want to settle in and sink your teeth into this one for sure. I loved it and can’t wait to head back to Buckhorn ASAP for book two. I’m electing to post a candid review.
Out of the Storm by B.J. Daniels is the first novel in her new Buckhorn, Montana series, and what a way to start a new series this is, because this novel is packed with more heart, more longing, more heartfelt emotion, and more edge-of-your-seat suspense than any of the other B.J. Daniels novels I’ve read to date. It gets 5 “I-couldn’t-put-it-down” stars from this reader.
Kate Jackson is a 39 year-old widow living in Houston, Texas. She married the love of her young life, Danny, when she was just 17, and he 19. Danny worked at an oil refinery, which exploded two years after their marriage, leaving Kate a very young widow with 2 infants to raise. The explosion was so devastating that many of the bodies were burned, making it impossible to identify them, and many of the survivors were left with amnesia. Danny’s body was never found, but Kate knew in her heart that he couldn’t be dead, although her searches at every hospital that victims were taken to turned up nothing.
Fast-forward 20 years, Kate’s daughters are grown, and Kate has finally met and dated a man she really likes, Collin, finally accepting his marriage proposal after knowing him for 6 months. He’s sprung a surprise engagement trip to Montana, with a stop in Canada, on Kate so she can finally see snow and fulfill her dream of making snow angels.
En route, their rental car breaks down during a blizzard, and they are forced to spend several days in a seedy motel in tiny Buckhorn, Montana, waiting to get their rental car repaired, with Collin becoming increasingly anxious, since there’s more to his side trip to Canada than making snow angels. He tells Kate that he’s ordered her wedding gown and after meeting up with several business associates, they’ll pick up her gown and head back across the border to continue their trip.
While taking a walk through Buckhorn, Kate hears a sander buzzing, a sound she’s quite familiar with–her father was a woodworker, and she follows the sound to an old carriage house, and actually faints when she first sets eyes on the man inside–it’s Danny, although he tells her his name is Jon Harper and denies being her late husband, she’s convinced it’s him, and she keeps coming back to his shop, and when she gets a good look as his eyes, she’s totally convinced it’s him, and it’s here that the trouble really begins.
Collin is not what he pretends to be. He has an ulterior motive for this engagement trip, as well as for his marriage to Kate, and it’s a dangerous motive. Jon Harper also has secrets he’s keeping. He’s lived in Buckhorn for 5 years, keeping to himself and for good reason, but Kate’s belief that he’s her Danny, and the stories she tells him about her marriage and her 20 years of awaiting his return really get to him. Is her her lost husband or isn’t he? Why would Collin order his fiance a wedding gown without her ever seeing it or trying it on? And if those questions don’t hook you into this story, I don’t know what will.
Told with great depth of character and plenty of deeply-felt emotion, this novel grabbed me from the very beginning and never let go for a single second. As romances go, this novel is a gem, and as for suspense, Out of the Storm has it in spades. I have no idea how Ms. Daniels is going to top this fabulous novel in the subsequent novels in this series, but I cannot wait to find out!
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this novel. The opinions stated are my own.
I know I can always count on anything B.J. Daniel’s writes to be a fantastic read that I will finish in one day, no matter how long it is! I get sucked in by the first page and I can’t stop reading! It was the same with this book. I felt this story was just a little bit different than other book by Daniels but neither good or bad, just different. I like that! It keeps the reader engaged! I loved all the characters, both good and bad ones. They were well-developed and added a lot to the story. I’ve always heard that people can feel deep in their hearts if a love one’s body is not found, if that loved one is still alive or not. Such is the case with Kate Jackson. Her husband supposedly died in an industrial fire 20 years ago but his body was never found and she feels in her heart that he’s still alive. Several times she thought she saw him. Just as she finally feels it’s time to move on and gets engaged to Collin, they go on a trip to Montana where they break down in a small town and Kate happens to see a man whose eyes looks just like her dead husband’s. There begins an adventure that has dangerous repercussions. Although the man, Jon, adamantly says he’s not Kate’s husband, he is touched by her story and feels a pull towards her. What will happen when he discovers that Collin isn’t who he says he is? Will he stick his neck out for this stranger who says they used to be married? Such a great book and I enjoyed the characters in the small town of Buckhorn! Can’t wait for the next book already!
