A New York Times bestseller for three years and counting! “A gutsy, candid, and compelling story. It speaks volumes.” –School Library Journal (starred review) “Unflinching and realistic.” –Kirkus Reviews (starred review) From award-winning author Sharon Draper comes a story that will forever change how we all look at anyone with a disability, perfect for fans of RJ Palacio’s Wonder. … anyone with a disability, perfect for fans of RJ Palacio’s Wonder.
Eleven-year-old Melody is not like most people. She can’t walk. She can’t talk. She can’t write. All because she has cerebral palsy. But she also has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She’s the smartest kid in her whole school, but NO ONE knows it. Most people–her teachers, her doctors, her classmates–dismiss her as mentally challenged because she can’t tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by her disability. And she’s determined to let everyone know it…somehow.

I believe that every Teacher should read this book. Even though it is fiction, it has a good moral to its story. It shows how a teacher should believe in every student and treat them the same. This book was an inspiration to me to be sure that I treat all students the same no matter what their abilities may be or not be at the time.
this book my teacher read to me and we always wanted her to keep reading more
I love this book so much!! The author made me feel like I was the character and I felt like I was going to lose my mind for Melody!!
I thought that this book really helped count your blessings. It shows you the struggle of having abnormal features, and how one person feels about being in the situation.
This book was so good. Melody’s journey through her disability was very inspirational, sad, funny, and entertaining! This book was full of details and very realistic! This book will inspire you on how life with a disability actually is like and how hard it is! I loved this book!
I LOVE THIS BOOK!! It is on my top three favorites: it is my #2! Everyone should read this book and really realize that people who have disabilities are NOT stupid, or dumb and have no knowledge! NO ONE is stupid or dumb, everyone is learning at a different pace. I HATE it when someone is rude to anyone, I get REALLY mad, so a few times I threw the book across the room. Kids (and adults) can be such jerks!! 🙁 I LOVED IT!!
If you like this book I recommend this book: Wonder
Thanks
My daughter bought this book home from school one day and I was reading the synopsis and was interested having a daughter with CP. So I went and read this book and this book really made me question things. I feel like we are pretty good with our daughter and try to give her the Normalist life possible. It made me question how she gets treated at school and how people treat her there. Melody has such a wonderful mind and people in her life. I felt angry for the things that happened to her and I felt what her and her mother felt. I know this book was fiction but I found it very interesting and related to it as well.
This is the story of Melody. A young girl with cerebral palsy. She cannot walk. She has never spoken. Yet she has hopes and dreams just like all other 11 year olds. Her parents know how smart she is, yet it takes a kindly neighbor and a school aide to get her a voice so she can communicate. Once she has a talking board, she can prove that she is smart and capable. She proves that her disability does not define her and how much she has to contribute.
This was a pretty good book. It is told in the voice of an 11 year old and would make a great book for teachers to read to students in the 3-5th grade range. It is a book about tolerance and misunderstanding when someone sees someone who cannot walk or talk. Melody proves that given the tools she needs, there is no stopping her. She wants what most 5th graders want – cool clothes, friends, and to be included.
As a nurse I have taken care of countless kids with cerebal palsy – many who were just as capable as Melody. I am a better person for knowing them. I would encourage parents to read all kinds of books about all different kinds of disabilities to their children to help use become more understanding of those who are differenly abled. It is a good lesson and this book a good place to start.
This helped me feel grateful of who i am it makes me glade that i can walk i can go to the bathroom and i can talk
Book #19 of 2021
Out Of My Mind by Sharon M Draper
I’ve had some difficulty rating this book. It’s not the most well-written juvenile fiction story but it is an important one with a message that everyone should receive and appreciate, and perhaps would be most enjoyed and beneficial to a younger audience of fourth to fifth graders; for which the book was intended.
The beginning and the middle of the book were pretty good and you cannot help but to be endeared by Melody’s intelligence, grit, and even her frustrations. But as we get towards the end there are two major plot events that seem a bit much (one would have sufficed) and sort of just crammed in, and the last few chapters feel a bit rushed and give a feeling that the author just wanted the book to be finished.
I was invested in the story and in the characters and found myself emotional over events that took place so I have given it four stars.
Teaches a lesson
Out Of My Mind is an amazing book! Melody is a young girl who can’t talk, speak or write. She is actually a genius, but has no way to let anyone know. Wonderful book! I literally read it four times! Thank you for writing this Sharen Draper!
I found this book in my school library in 4th grade and I just got it because the next week we had a week off so I wanted something big, long, and bulky to read. I read and wow. It was so descriptive it honestly made me want to right a story of my own. Its plot is also very intresting all in all i love how much it describes things (example in the book) : “sadness decorating the edges of his words.”
i think it was unic and wanderfull i love iit so much
This book was an eye opener into the inner and outer life of a disabled child. I had sympathy for her and admired her persistence and inner strength. She just didn’t give up. I found it an enlightening and positive book and enjoyed reading it.
I work with kids with disabilities and I have always wanted to know how it is. The book reveals how they feel and how they should be treated. It also has accurate information. My fourth grade teacher gave the book to me and I still have it. I really wish someone would make a movie based in it. This book is also perfect for book clubs and even has questions at the end!
i don’t know but im trying to read the book not look at the cover
